Chuck Questionnaire
Hello friends
I am writing a paper on Chuck for my graduation and would really like to include some experiences and thoughts Chuck's fans would like to share! If you enjoy filling out questionnaires or if you'd be kind enough to help me out a bit I would be so thankful if you sent the following questions answered to me at nowhipmocha at gmail.com or just post them as a reply.
Of course you can leave out certain questions if you don't want to answer them!
I hope some of you will enjoy filling them out!

1. How did you first hear about Chuck and which one was the first book of his that you read?
I saw the Fight Club movie. I picked the book up later but didn't really read the whole thing as I had seen the movie. My brother told me that he had some friends who read Chuck's other books. I read "Choke" in its entirety first and LOVED it.
2. Have you read all of Chuck's novels? Which one do you feel is his most outstanding one?
Yes I've read all his novels. Survivor is my favorite.
3. If you've watched the movie Fight Club, have you read the book before or after watching the movie? Did you think the movie was as good as the book?
Surprisingly, I thought the book was better than the movie even though I saw the movie first.
4. What is it that makes you love Chuck's books?
(Most of) Chuck's books don't have that awkward first fifty pages that you have to spend actually trying to get into the story. Like some other authors have.
5. In one word, describe Chuck and his work.
Intrigue.
6. Which of Chuck's characters is your favorite one and why?
Currently it's Rant Casey. He stands out the most from any other character Chuck has written.
7. After reading a few of his books, do his newer novels and their turning points still surprise you?
Rant surprised me (his second newest). Snuff, his newest one, didn't.
8. Do you know of any people that have become fans after watching Fight Club or Choke?
Yeah.
9. Is there anything you find particularly interesting or funny about Chuck or is there anything else at all you want to say?
It's interesting how he's interested in getting more people to write.
Thank you very much Amy and Mike!
Barca Boy, thanks to you too! It's actually a good thing if the answers are alike because that'll allow me to identify what many people feel like and will therefore make more sense to mention in the essay.
Anyone else that would be nice enough to fill it out?

1. How did you first hear about Chuck and which one was the first book of his that you read?
I saw the Fight Club when it first came out and loved it, but i didn't read much at that time, about 3 or 4 years later when i moved to vegas, my neibor read lots of stuff and said i should check out the book, (he also had choke, but hadn't read it yet) i read it in 4 or 5 days, loved it. and i made him let me borrow choke, once again loved it. after that i went through all of chuck's books, even the non-fiction.
2. Have you read all of Chuck's novels? Which one do you feel is his most outstanding one?
have. invisible monsters. but damn that's a hard question.
3. If you've watched the movie Fight Club, have you read the book before or after watching the movie? Did you think the movie was as good as the book?

4. What is it that makes you love Chuck's books?
he sucks you in immediatly(oops) and doesn't let up with disturbing topics and dark humor.
5. In one word, describe Chuck and his work.
unbelievable
6. Which of Chuck's characters is your favorite one and why?
Rant Casey. because the character is named after me. j/k. my god that's tough. i guess tender branson because in some ways i know what it's like to be brainwashed with religion since birth.
7. After reading a few of his books, do his newer novels and their turning points still surprise you?
snuff. not really, and haunted, not really. but he still does throw some nice curves in there.

1. How did you first hear about Chuck and which one was the first book of his that you read? Fight Club, and I read Snuff first.
2. Have you read all of Chuck's novels? Which one do you feel is his most outstanding one? Not all of them, there's two that I can't find. Strange than Fiction is my favorite, though.
3. If you've watched the movie Fight Club, have you read the book before or after watching the movie? Did you think the movie was as good as the book? Watched the book after the movie. The book wouldn't have made any sense to me without the movie.
4. What is it that makes you love Chuck's books? The way he writes them.
5. In one word, describe Chuck and his work. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
6. Which of Chuck's characters is your favorite one and why? The Baroness Frostbite, because of her lips being frostbit.
7. After reading a few of his books, do his newer novels and their turning points still surprise you? Nope.
8. Do you know of any people that have become fans after watching Fight Club or Choke? Myself.

1. How did you first hear about Chuck and which one was the first book of his that you read? Obviously, I knew he'd written Fight Club. I still haven't read it to this day (for various reasons). My sophomore year in college (2003), a co-worker of mine showed me the book he was reading and it happened to be Lullaby. After he finished it, I read it, thought it was ok, and started Diary, which was also only ok. Then I read Choke, Survivor, Invisible Monsters - loved them all. Been a fan ever since.
2. Have you read all of Chuck's novels? Which one do you feel is his most outstanding one?
The only one I haven't read is Fight Club. My favorite two are Choke and Rant. I haven't read Choke in a few years, so I can't really specify why that is still one of my favorites, it's just always stayed with me. I know that I loved Rant, though, because the narration is so different from all his other novels. The story itself is great and imaginative, and it's that, coupled with the frame-narrative that makes me love it so much.
3. If you've watched the movie Fight Club, have you read the book before or after watching the movie? Did you think the movie was as good as the book?
Hahaha. This is the exact reason why I've never read the book. I LOVED the movie Fight Club. I've written numerous research papers on it and the main reason I haven't read the book is because I don't want to be disappointed. I love the movie so much, I'd be disappointed if the book was better. On that same note, though, I love CP so much, I'd be incredibly disappointed if the movie was better. I lose either way, so I just choose not to read it!
4. What is it that makes you love Chuck's books?
To me, he really captures the voice of a generation and twists it into intricate, compelling stories. (Except for Snuff, which I honestly didn't care for.) Something about the way he portrays the disenfranchised, hopeless, wandering youth of America keeps my attention.
5. In one word, describe Chuck and his work.
nihilistic
6. Which of Chuck's characters is your favorite one and why?
Victor. Can't really say.
7. After reading a few of his books, do his newer novels and their turning points still surprise you?
They don't surprise me, because I'm expecting to be surprised. If he wrote a novel that ended in a normal way, that would probably surprise the shit out of me.
8. Do you know of any people that have become fans after watching Fight Club or Choke?
No. People where I'm from are barely literate. They become fans of the movies, but not the books.
9. Is there anything you find particularly interesting or funny about Chuck or is there anything else at all you want to say?
I was kind of sad to find out that he's gay. Not because I actually care, but because his novels tend to be depraved, and I just freaking KNOW there's someone out there saying, "Ooooh... Well, he only writes that way because he's gay" or someone else might say, "well he's so imaginative/innovative because he's gay." It's aggravating because he can't be a great fucking writer just because he IS. He needs a reason. Dumbdumbs.

1. How did you first hear about Chuck and which one was the first book of his that you read?
I found fightclub in a bargin bookshop (The Works I think) and I didn't even read it until I heard they were making the film. Then I read it and loved it.
2. Have you read all of Chuck's novels? Which one do you feel is his most outstanding one?
I've read them all now (just read snuff) and my current favourite is Rant. Not sure why, mainly I liked the oral storytelling as a technique.
3. If you've watched the movie Fight Club, have you read the book before or after watching the movie? Did you think the movie was as good as the book?
Before. I tend to usually prefer books.
4. What is it that makes you love Chuck's books?
I love that he's funny, I love that his characters are always lying to you.
5. In one word, describe Chuck and his work.
Funny.
6. Which of Chuck's characters is your favorite one and why?
Tender Branson. I love stories/things about religion.
7. After reading a few of his books, do his newer novels and their turning points still surprise you?
Usually, not always. Like I got the boy/girl thing in Snuff early... Mostly though I catch them when he wants you to - just before the big reveal.
8. Do you know of any people that have become fans after watching Fight Club or Choke?
No
9. Is there anything you find particularly interesting or funny about Chuck or is there anything else at all you want to say?
I'm surprised at how many people see him as declining. I think he's getting a stronger writer. I liked Diary for example. Snuff I agree was a quicke - but it was still bloody funny.

I LOVE THESE THINGS!!
Name: Amy
Age: 23
Location: Cardiff, Wales, UK
1. How did you first hear about Chuck and which one was the first book of his that you read?
I had a boyfriend who liked him and he lent me Lullaby to read on holiday.
2. Have you read all of Chuck's novels? Which one do you feel is his most outstanding one?
I liked Choke best out of all of them, just because I thought it was funniest.
3. If you've watched the movie Fight Club, have you read the book before or after watching the movie? Did you think the movie was as good as the book?
I watched the film first, I thought the film was way better than the book.
4. What is it that makes you love Chuck's books?
I used to love them because they were funny, I hadn't read anything like them before, I thought his voice was super unique and I liked the little factoids.
5. In one word, describe Chuck and his work.
Declining?
6. Which of Chuck's characters is your favorite one and why?
It was Denny out of Choke, I used to love him, I thought he was wicked funny.
7. After reading a few of his books, do his newer novels and their turning points still surprise you?
No, not really, if anything it bothers me.
8. Do you know of any people that have become fans after watching Fight Club or Choke?
I think everyone I know who likes him only knows of him because of the movie Fight Club.
9. Is there anything you find particularly interesting or funny about Chuck or is there anything else at all you want to say?
I'm not just being antagonistic or anything, I'm trying to be honest about how I feel about his stuff now, for me it's wearing thin. I feel like he could write such cool stuff if maybe he wasn't on a book a year contract or kind of pandering to what is popular about his stuff. I'd really like to see him come back with this next novel with real gusto. No more lazy twists or anything. Sometimes it feels like Chuck doing an impression of Chuck.
