Catching online sexual predators
Hope the subject line caught your eye! A friend and I recently stumbled upon a subject we feel might be very "Chuck-like" and fun to write on. The idea of catching sexual predators through chatrooms is nothing new if you've watched Dateline in the last 10+ years, but I think we might have a nice little twist, making this story worthy of exploration.
Backgroud:
The idea stemmed from the fact that my friend's older brother will spend hours of his free time posing as little children in chatrooms in an effort to flush out sexual predators (yes, he does do this for fun; no, I am not making this up; and, yes, I realize he has some major issues!). The funny part is that when he's lured the people into damning conversations, he will hit them with a very official-looking message saying that they've just been electronically tagged by the FBI and that their case "is currently being transfered to the nearest agent for further inquiry."
Question:
Does anybody have any real life experience with this type of subject (hopefully not the predators although that could be a funny conversation!) that might be able to provide details I could use?
NOTE:
- the point of view we're trying to write from in the story is of a cop who is essentially doing the same job as my friend's brother. I was hoping to find someone within law enforcement or in other aspects of the criminal justice system (i.e. Judicial branch) that could provide more technical PERSONNAL background information on how the government goes about catching and punishing these sick ppl.
- I AM MOST CERTAINLY NOT ASKING ANYONE, ESPECIALLY VICTEMS, TO PROVIDE INFORMATION REGUARDING PERSONNAL ENCOUNTERS WITH ABUSE/ETC... THAT OCCURED BECAUSE OF ONLINE SEXUAL PREDATORS --> that is morally wrong and was NOT my intention. I'm deeply sorry if anyone misread my intentions
Thanks to all who actually read this, and for any help anyone might be able to provide!
Or will it all end in a big bankiss orgy?
the problem with his material is two-fold:
1) It's only from one perspective and it's always good to have multiple/differing source material
2) the dude is a creep and it's tough to talk to the guy for more than a little bit at a time...I'm sure you can understand why.

Not really, no. He may be obsessed but at least he'd trying to stop the peds.
So..you want stories from the non predators for your fun idea. You mean the victims?
i see how that works now. waffles wouldnt have nearly the same menace.
You do get it. The waffles are for when it's all gravy.
After reviewing what I wrote earlier, I can see why this looks like a bad post:

-I'm glad my friend's bro is trying to stop "the peds", he's just weird and there's not much else I can say other than you just have to meet the guy to understand.

Thank you for clarifying. You had me freaked out. It's always better to be clear about this kind of thing.
perfectly understandable....
Or will it all end in a big bankiss orgy?
Seems to me he's not stopping them so much as letting them know they need to be more careful. Is he logging any of this? Reporting anything to the authorities?
Sorry I'm not actually helping with your idea; I don't really have anything in that department.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Tuffy: As far as I know he doesn't report any, and that's why I think of him as a creep. He is logging some, which are helpful, but not all of them.
Giggan: the title is not misleading....I am doing research into the subject of catching online sexual predators. Is this not the right forum for this subject?
Or will it all end in a big bankiss orgy?
Correct. Seems a legit question to ask and this would be the proper location.
Unfortunately, I have nothing to add to this area. However, I am fairly certain that I have been hit on in the past by undercover cops posing as underaged girls. Which is unpleasant on a whole bunch of different levels.
Either that or the internet has a lot of very dark, aggressive, underaged girls.
This is why we can't have nice things.
didn't Chuck go in chat rooms and pretend he was a tranny when writing IM?
maybe Chuck will just give me his notes....or, better yet, I'm sure he's willing to help me research this personally!
and Tuffy it sounds like you do have helpful info!

Doesn't your friend's older brother have plenty of material for you already?
