1910s slang
Hi everyone!
I just signed up here looking for help writing because I'm writing my first book. My main problem is its based in the 1910s and I want it so sound authentic. I'm not familiar with any 1910s slang or lingo. The only things I know I know from TV or movies and as we all know most historic TV is about as authentic as Flava of Love. I don't even know where to search for this kind of thing. Google is no help at all. I don't trust Yahoo! Answers or Wikianswers at all. Is there anyone here who is familiar with this time period and can help me out?
Thanks a bunch!
none of us are from there. sorry.
I suggest reading books from that time period. They may contain some good slogans. Look up on google 1910's ads. They'll have sayings. 1910's newspapers on google. Don't google "1910 slang" google stuff from that time period.

That's actually really good advice, especially about the ads. It's hard to find things that aren't written formally, but that's a start. Thank you for the idea, LeHaHi!
I know you said Google was no help but I found this http://www.writersdreamtools.com/view/decades/default.asp?Decade=1910 on it. I don't know if it's any good, perhaps you've already viewed it, but it contains information (including a 'New Slang Words' section) about the 1910's.
Good luck!
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
or... just don't set it in the 1910's if you don't know anything about that time period, maybe? what is the relevance of that time in relation to your story? if there is little to none, well, than it's obvious what to do, yeah?
There's no need to be rude! I asked a legitimate question! I have done more research on the 1910's than I care to think about but legitimate slag isn't something you come across easily. I want to avoid anachronisms. Most successful historical movies and books are full of them! The whole book isn't about the 1910's but there are 'flashback' scenes to then that are essential to the plot! If it was not relevant, why would I even be asking? It's very presumptuous and rude to assume without reading any of it or even having read a summary that it's not relevant! Your answer is counterproductive!
blah blah. jump to a conclusion why don't you.
i was just saying; might be an option to look at if you can't make it genuine by gathering enough information to makeyour language sound plausible, right?
well, now. goodluck with your novel, hope you can find the info you need.
"Blah blah!" Wow! I was only asking a question in a Research Forum. . . You sound very opinionated, which is a good thing, but sometimes when no one is asking for your opinion, it's pretty rude! But I'm sure you don't care! I just hope that you are not so rude to other new members when they ask for help with legitimate things. Anyway thanks to those who were helpful!
You need to take these things on the chin. Especially if you're going to be a writer.
I don't think Matthew meant it personally. It was merely a constructive criticism.
Let us know how you get on.

Sorry I took it to heart. I just think it's funny to critique something without reading it! Thanks guys.
