I got this friend who watches anime, so now and then I get sucked into watching one of the videos. He has like, fifty of them, and about 49 of them suck. Actually, yeah, exactly 49. In fact, the only non-sucking one was Blood The Last Vampire.
It was pretty sweet, none of that stopping halfway through a fight to say, "hahaha, I am more powerful than you!" crap.
He's living with me now, and we have a 'I choose a movie, than you choose a movie' thing going on, and he always chooses anime, while I choose awesome stuff like Under Seige II.

I was hoping you guys could name a couple anime movies that weren't all japanesey, ya'know?
Like, hold the comic relief that isn't funny, like that baby emperor thing in Yu Yu Hsomething, and the background changing colour because they're too lazy to draw a background, and throw in some more actual fighting that makes sense. Or at least a little bit of sense.

Oh, and I draw the line at hentai. No pencil sketched tits for me, thanks.

Grave of the Fireflies-- Sheer drama.
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust -- Beautifully animated gothic thriller in English.
Cowboy Bebop -- Batman-esque sci-fi coolness with Depth.
Ghost in the Shell -- What the Wachowski siblings were inspired by, only unlike the Matrix, it doesn't suck.
Akira -- I personally can't stand it, but it is quite good. Motorcycle sci-fi.

blood - i think this is a one tape thing. no series to follow. just good ol' bloody demon killing fun

lain - a strange spin on the matrix. oor maybe insoiration for the matrix.. either way you'll have to watch all of it for it to even come close to making sense. but its cool

cowboy bebop - follows the exploits of a group of space bounty hunters. pretty good action cartoon. can be seen on adult swim. i think

These recommendations are just wrong.
How can they say "watch it" yet they didn't enjoy it?

Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal - Lots of blood, none of this stopping in the middle of a fight to say "ha ha you are so weak, watch me kill you now and eat your face" shit, just plain old sword fighting, with lots of blood. However Trust & Betrayal gets quite emotional too, it's more of a drama than an action movie, but it has it's moments.

Do you like Street Fighter? If you do check out Street Fighter 2 The Animated Movie, and Street Fighter Alpha, both are quite kickass, Street Fighter 2 The Animated Movie is older so it's not as visually as impressive as Alpha, but it has a much better storyline which stays closer to the game and original characters. Watch out though, you see Chun Li showering, it's not hentai, but it's a titshot.

Cowboy Bebop: Series and Movie - You don't need to have seen the series to enjoy the movie. It's about bounty hunters and it takes place in the future where interplanetary exploration's been done already, so there are people living on Mars. It's got good gunfights, hand to hand fights, and even some dogfights between ships. the storyline is good, even if it is set in the future, don't get me wrong, this ain't no sci-fi bullshit, this is a thriller/action anime, none of this "get to the bridge, we have a photon torpedo closing in fast" shite.

Yeah, I saw a street fighter once. It was pretty good, not sure which one it was though. I think they were on an island, and I remember the girl in blue punches the sumo guy in the stomach and he laughs and then coughs up blood and dies.
Speaking of which, is there any Mortal Kombat anime? I doubt it, but that would be pretty sweet.

It's a good movie, in that the animation is good, the dialogue is nice, the pacing is good, plot twists, characters, atmosphere, all very good. It's just not my cup of tea.

Come on, don't tell me you've never seen a movie that was very good but just not your kind of thing.

That would be Street Fighter The Animated Movie, obviously the better of the two. Mortal Kombat anime would be schweet, but unfortunately it doesn't exist, just some crappy TV show cartoon.

The only anime I ever really got into is Witch Hunter: Robin. It's not a movie, it's a series, but it's significantly less weird than most the animes I've seen.

See Metropolis. If you can get past the old school character designs, you'll see a great story with a little sci-fi blend. It's got a good share of actions sequences, but none are pointless. And there is dialogue that makes sense and furthers the story, along with insanely detailed artwork and backgrounds, so you don't have to worry about "background changing colour because they're too lazy to draw a background."

I almost forgot Hellsing!
hellsing is great, it's got vampires, demons, the supposed son of Dracula, big guns, crazed catholic scotsmen with knives, lots of blood.

Wow, here's a surprise. Someone must have some taste and doesn't like anime...

Seriously, I don't know how so many people like most of that crap. I think it has to be that it is Japanese, and it makes them feel like they are special or something.

However, a few standout titles I actually like are

Akira
Ghost In The Shell
Spirited Away
Ninja Scroll

I think all these were previously mentioned, but they are the ones I would say you are most likely to enjoy.

i saw Metropolis and it was beautiful.. it's based on the old silent film if you know which one i mean.. faily political film out of the wreckage of WWI i think.. and really.. no need to "get past" the old school char designs.. astroboy rocked in char design Tongue
