Comics: What's worth picking up these days?
Used to be a big comic book collecter until a few years back, titles such as AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (the whole clone saga turned me off - but he's still my favorite), BONE (excellent humour), the short lived WETWORKS (beautifull graphic art by Whilce Partacio), Frank Miller's superb SIN CITY series. Etc etc...
I'm definitely picking up the collected soft/hardcover of STRAY BULLETS, heard alot about it.
Every once in a while I drop by my old comics-store, but almost nothing jumps out at me. Plus, nobody seems to WANT to be consistend. I'm tired of series starting and dissapearing after seven issues. Or changing creative teams after a tremendous short period. Maybe some new mini-series?
Or, in another way, what recent series are worth picking up?
Ey Dutchie, where do you get your comics fix? Utrecht, Amsterdam?
Thanks for the tip by the way, will look it up next time in De Eppo (Eindhoven). Gods are funny.
Check these out with out a thought slave!!!!
1. Johny the Homicidal Maniac
2. Lenore the cute dead girl
3. Anything by James O'Barr
4. Lady Death
5. Evil Ernie (if you can find one)
6. Wolverine is still good everyonce in a while

"Im gonna save the world. That includes all you miserable pukes"
Is MILK AND CHEESE officialy dead? Or anything else by Evan Dorkin for that matter.
Lady Death? Big booby devils never really interested me. In comic form that is.
Evil Ernie? Elaborate please.
Ey Dutchie, where do you get your comics fix? Utrecht, Amsterdam?
It used to be spirit, den bosch and eppo... henk in a'dam is great. Too expensive with the dollar changing all the time, look for 'steampunk' as well it stopped for lack of audience, but it's 13 issues worth your while.

Lady Death Has been Transformed and is no longer a Chaos comic as they went out of business. Her story is still written by Brian Pulido but it is not even close to the original.
Evil Ernie is another chaos comic about a kid that was abused and then he died and came back to make people dead like him. His goal is to make everyone on the planet dead. He is still kind of a good guy because he was hurt as a child ya see, that whole woe is me so I kill thing. Anywho look up the name and good luck finding any.

Ah the Spirit in Den Bosch, with the Sylvester on display outside. Can you maybe pass the adress (and how to get there) of HENK in Amsterdam.
I remember a very small period when the dollar plummeted and comics were like amazingly cheap. What days.
PS. Big S just mentioned Chris Bachalo to me. I used to get as much as possible done by him, sometimes almost just for the artwork. I'll pick up those thirteen issues of STEAMPUNK. Thanks!

Thanks for the comments, but I find that whole "dark and I'm not understood by society" genre of comics utterly fucking boring. But I'll look it up. Hopefully I'm wrong.
13 issues? i didn't think it made it that far. cool...
I have over 50 bachallo comics, my favourite!! Generation X, Death, Steampunk, now I heard he's doing X men, but I'm out of the comic thing...

Stray Bullets; excellent choice, I think it's up to 7 softcovers.
Also, did you know that the Bone series is collected in one huge version? No need to track down each issue or several collected editions. More info on the one volume edition here

Have you heard about Brian Michael Bendis? He's like the king of comics at the moment, which means every title he writes becomes gold. His writing is top-notch. Also, the artists that work with him are excellent.
his website has a list of collected editions of his work; http://www.jinxworld.com/
I recommend Torso, Alias, and Daredevil (issues 26 and up).

Shit that's cheap, but what the hell Imma do with all the rest of the single BONE issues I already have. I KNEW I should've put that series off as soon as I found out that it was a series with a definite end.

Yeah Bendis seems to be the hot stuff now, will definitely be on the lookout for his stuff. I also remember something about a series where the story focusses on policemen in a world where superheroes rule the world. Was that a Bendis written series too?
i think it's called 'powers' or something like that. you all should pick up 'wizard edge'. it a magazine for indie comics.
i think it's called 'powers' or something like that. you all should pick up 'wizard edge'. it a magazine for indie comics.
Ah see THAT's what I need. Is WIZARD EDGE affiliated with WIZARD magazine? It seemed for a while they were becoming too much glossy superheroes based.

Yup, that's Powers. I haven't read the older issues so I can't fully recommend that title, but almost all of Bendis' work have been enjoyable. I have no doubt that Powers will be great.
yeah, it's from wizard. there's really cool stuff in it. i've read wizard since i was 14, although not recently because of the glossy superhero thing.
They had some funny things in there sometimes I remember.
OJO by a guy called Sam Keith. His artworks amazing, and actually ties in to the story. He also did a Wloverine/Hulk crossover a couple of years ago, and I REALLY recommend picking up the TPB, it's not only the best crossover I've read, but it's also one of my favourite comics full-stop. Like I said, the artwork ties in with the story, so when the ghost of the little girl that's narrating the story fades, the pictures get simpler, and so on. I can't recommend these books enough.
Boneyard by Richard Moore is pretty funny, and ROMP by Adam Pollina is very cool. (both TPB)
Anything from Avatar press. Joe R Lansdale is currently doing a series for Avatar called By Bizarre Hands, which is fucking excellent. And each issue is it's own story, so you don't have to worry about missing anything by not reading earlier issues.

Did you like The Maxx?
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
Never heard of The Maxx, what is it?
*shakes his head in disbelief*

you just made me scoff.
The Sandman spinoff, Lucifer, is the only comic that i really keep up with anymore.

Holy crap. Do a web search for Sam Keith and the Maxx. The Maxx was one of the weirdest and greatest comics I have ever read. The art is splendid. Keith draws the reality of the human form. All the women in his book have imperfections whcih I find beautiful. So.. yea check out the Maxx.

Adrianne Tomine(sp?) does a great comic called Optic Nerve. Recommended for people who like something a little more personal.
I only read the first trade of it, but Transmetropolitan kicked ass. Course, it's not really new, but I think the trades might be.

Overrated and overwritten. Check out The Invisibles instead. Much more adroit writing and meaningful. Ellis (Transmetro) writes far too on-the-nose.
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
Will do.
Say what you will, but you've gotta love the image of a freelance journalist perched on the roof of a strip club, streaming a live report of the riot going on in the streets below.

i LOVED the maxx - did you ever see the animated series of it - not as good as the comic but a good taster of it. i think it was an mtv project (could be wrong) sort of mid 90's it came out, along with Aeon Flux, if you remember that one too, not as good but kind of interesting in a slow moving dominatrix way.

i agree, i couldn't wait to get into transmetropolitan because i'd heard so many people go on and on about it, but i thought it was quite a lazy, mediocre comic, a bit try-hard, a bit boring actually.
I like to read anything by these writers in the comic book industry:
Neil Gaiman (Sandman Series, Book of Magic, !604)
Greg Rucka (Wolverine, Wonder Woman. both characters I despised before he started writing them)
Brian K. Vaughn ( Y the last man, Ex Machina)
Will Phifer (did the revamp to Dial H for Hero)
Titles I like:
Human Target - DC Vertigo
Powers - Marvel Icons (Brian Michael Bendis)
Kabuki - Marvel Icons (David Mack)
We3 - DC (Grant Morrison)
Sleepers - Wildstorm (Ed Brubaker)
Daredevil - Marvel Knights (Bendis & Alex Maleev)
Planetary - Wildstorm (Warren Ellis & Cassaday)
And Alan Moore's WATCHMEN, thats some great stuff there.
Oh and I can't go without mention American Splendor
Good comic to be reading right now also is
100 Bullets - DC VERTIGO
Plus there is also Bendis' Alias comic
Its a great read in my opinion, but not that good now since it turned PG with a new name The Pulse. Still good but not great.
For those that follow Sam Keith he has a mini-series going on for DC now called _Scratch_.
Can’t say much in the industry gets me too excited nowadays, so much so that when I get my comics sometimes it takes me months to read them…especially now the _Cerebus_ reached its final issue 300.
Things I still do buy:
Human Target (DC/Vertigo)
100 Bullets (DC/Vertigo)
X-Statix (Marvel), but it just got cancelled.
Daredevil (Marvel) (and yes, _Alias_, now basically “Ultimate Alias” (_The Pulse_) sucks (_Powers_ hasn’t impressed me and Bendis’ _Avengers_ is ok)
And I’m looking forward to Bill Sienkiewicz (my favourite artist) doing _Black Widow_
Interesting how the industry is now selling titles on the strength of writers, nice to see.
Sadly, to me, a lot of these guys are way over-hyped and try to do too much (some write up to 7 comics a month?)

Just bought the first four STRAY BULLETS trade paperbacks by David Lapham. And I fuckin' love it!

Just think of the year 1604 and add some of the current marvel characters (Dr. Strange, X-Men, Dr. Doom, Nick Fury, etc.) as if they were really in that time period. The complete series (5 or 7 issue mini-series) should already be out in a tradepaperback format.
what's that !601 title by Neil Gaiman
Quite simply the blindingly pathetic idea of 'Ultimate Marvel Universe in the 15th Century', but as it's Neil, of course people 'loved' it.
One of the Kuberts (the youngsters-I get the 2 confused) did the art assisted by the 'digital painter' (Isovove?) when clearly the cover artists should have been given the assignment but then wooing in the people that ‘loved’ the Wolverine _Origin_ thing wouldn’t have come aboard.
When even the biggest (albeit fantastically over-rated) names in the comics field is coming up empty, the industry is really, really in trouble…

is 'scratch' in trade paperback yet? i'll look out for that one, i don't mind a bit of sam keith, what's the basic synopsis? so you didn't like 1604 then? i'll still pick it up and check it out, but it sounds a bit iffy. i'm afraid i'm a DO have a soft spot for the old neil, but i'll still be open minded and judge it for it's own merit.
is 'scratch' in trade paperback yet?
Nope. Probably, I don't know...December. It's a 5 issue series and I believe issue 4 just came out.
I peeked about and found this for you:

Not in the least. But indeed, give it a flip through for yourself.
Happy reading,

Last week I finished reading the first issue to the marvel mini-series Madrox (aka Multiple Man). I found myself enjoying this first issue. Especially since its a mutant character I always wanted to see get his own title for some time now.
The new book of magic comic with Tim Hunter ( I think) is pretty good. I missed the previous volume to it so I'm alittle off with exactly whats going on entirely, but its still a good read as well.

thanos is supposed to be good I will be tracking it down the next few weeks, I'll keep you posted!
