Comic Milestones/Must Reads Volume II - The List
the first version kinda went downhill into a "yea, that suggestion is good" and "yea, that suggesting just fucking sucks".
this time i want people to list, say, their top 10-20 for Comic Milestones/Must Reads. I'd love to hear the 'why' behind it too, but no "your suggestions suck". the thing is, i'm going to be doing a graphic novel book club, where everyone reads a different one from everyone else, and then rotate the graphic novels each month. So i only want the best, because i would hate to waste my employers money on something that's not the best...
begin
In no order except under must read;
Bone : read the series in order
Why? easily the safest, most entertaining read any kid or adult will enjoy.
Stray Bullets: any trade paperback will do
Why? one of the best indie crime noir books that's been put out. also, it's been a low-radar title that any Frank Miller reader will like.
Blankets : a massive 500 page+ graphic novel
Why? a deeply moving personal story that no Super-Hero title will ever tell because this tale is based on real life.
PCJ, Neil, thanks, i'm going to look into those. i'm hoping to be able to track down new copies of these, and eventually just let certain kids have their favorites.
any more suggestions would be great:)
From Hell, Alan Moore
--my favorite Alan Moore and a whacked out telling of Jack the Ripper
The Maxx, Sam Kieth
--my all time favorite comic, which is now coming out in TPB
Sin City: The Babe Wore Red, Frank Miller
Weapon X

Damn straight on The Maxx, certainly my favorite comic of all time, hands down.
I can't wait for the second volume of The Maxx. I missed a few at the end.
I keep looking at this list
thinking it will change, but it won't.
I know trypdwyre said don't say so and so sucks, but I scratch my head
about The Maxx.
Is it really that damn good that every person reading comics should read?
Or is it just a comic that certain people like to read?
I really want to read Sin City, only problem is they are so hard to find. Trying to see what its like before the movie comes out.
If you look up Stereotypical Black Teenage Male in the dictionary you will see a picture of me...fucking a cat...with a suprisingly small penis
My Girlfriend: I'm not a cat.
Me: Sure honey...sure.
Y the last man looks good too, but manga, dvd's, credit card, and car bills limit my spending. Being deprived of good reading is not a good thing I would reserve stuff from the library but I'm pretty sure I owe them money (slow reader).

about The Maxx.

In my opinion, yes. The art has a lot of depth. Each frame is very detailed. If you don't think it's great, you can't say it's not unique. The story is universal. It's a fantasy story about imagination, self discovery and love. And that's as much as I'll defend it.
I forgot to list Cerebus. The books are a bit epic, but it's a good series.

The whole Bone Collection in one edition for only $40. That's one hell of a bargain.

alright, i've still got about a month to get this together, but i'd like to be able to compile a list of anywhere from the top 5-to the top 20. so i'd like everyone to comment on, and rank these these: (listed here in no particular order)
Bone

The Maxx

Powers : Who Killed Retro Girl?

Daredevil : Born Again

The Authority : Under New Management

Transmetropolitan : all of them

Y the Last Man : Unmanned

League of Extraordanary Gentletmen

Preacher : Gone to Texas

100 Bullets : First Shot, Last Call

X-Men : The Dark Phoenix Saga

Ultimate Spider-man : Power and Responsibility

Stray Bullets

From Hell

The Maxx

Sin City

Kingdom Come

Alias

The Sandman

Goldfish

Watchmen

Age of Apocalypse
ok, here's the hard part. i'd like you to rate them by their genre (ie noir, superhero, manga, sci-fi, etc...)
i want only the best, and i want the milestones, the must reads, not just the one you like the best.
i really appreciate all your help, all of you:)
Bone
never read it, but from what i hear, as far as cartoon-style comics go, it's really good.
The Maxx
never got into it. read an issue or three, didn't really capture me. kieth is a good artist, but nowhere near revolutionary.
Powers : Who Killed Retro Girl?
i can't decide whether this fits into superhero or noir, cause it really is both. but i'd say #2 for both genres
Daredevil : Born Again
#3 in superheroes. totally redefined daredevil.
The Authority : Under New Management
i put this as #1 for superheroes, cause millar really changed superhero comics, just the way miller did with daredevil and batman, and moore did with superman and watchmen.
Transmetropolitan : all of them
#4 in fiction
Y the Last Man : Unmanned
#3 in the fiction
League of Extraordanary Gentletmen
#2 in fiction
Preacher : Gone to Texas
preacher is #1 in the fiction genre. i know it's not a real genre, but i don't know what else to really call it.
100 Bullets : First Shot, Last Call
#3 - noir
X-Men : The Dark Phoenix Saga
#6 superheroes
Ultimate Spider-man : Power and Responsibility
#5 superheroes
Stray Bullets
#4 on noir, but only cause i've only read the first 4 or so issues.
From Hell
really the only one in the horror genre on the list, i guess.
The Maxx
twice? beh.
Sin City
i think out of these, this is probably #1 on the noir tip.
Kingdom Come
#8 superheroes. i tend to think this is the MOST overrated graphic novel of all time. the story is actually mediocre, and really adds nothing but YET ANOTHER future superhero story(sorry, but miller did it best with dark knight returns... why is that on this list? did no one suggest it? i didn't only cause i was sure someone else would) and alex ross' art may be pretty, but it's as static as a brick.
Alias
another cross genre book... it's very noir-ish, but definitely a superhero book. #5 in noir? dunno where in superhero.
The Sandman
#5 in fiction. i've only read the first GN, and it was good, but really slow.
Goldfish
# 6 in noir
Watchmen
#4 superheroes. i tend to think this is overrated, but it is looked at as THE comic milestone.
Age of Apocalypse
#7 superheroes. it's good stuff, but really only powerful if you are familiar with the x-men. if you're brand new to comics, this might not make a lot of sense.

yes, it's all done. the picture I posted is the whole series collected in one edition, as opposed to buying several trade paperbacks.
neil, PCJ, wow, thank you both. you've both been more than helpful.
I failed to mention, but I thought it was obvious, that you really can't go wrong if you pick from the holy trinity of comic writers; Frank Miller, Alan Moore, and Neil Gaiman. Critics, fanboys, and media junkies label these fellows as the modern gods of graphic novels.
Bug Boy, Red Snake or any other in the hino horror series by classic manga artist Hideshi Hino.. truly wonderful stuff, mostly horror-esque
Blame! and Snikt! both by the samw guy.. i forget his name.. very cool sci-fi horror stuff (wolverine goes horror, imagine that for me)..

What about Archie #496?
Betty misses her period. She finds out she's pregnant and isn't sure if it's Archie's or Jughead's kid. All this other stuff happens I can't remember, but in the end she gets an abortion and her parents kick her out.
You will never be famous.

Jughead freaks out and claims Betty date raped him becuase he thinks it's going to fuck up his scholarship to Yale. And I think this was the issue where Archie finally indulged that snuff obsession they'd been building up to for the whole year when he killed that prostitue in that motel outside of town.
Or that might have been the next ish, don't quote me on that.
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
