So yeah, not the biggest fan of anime, or of it's fans (I don't know how many desperate 40 eyar old immigrants who watch anime I've met, what's even more disturbing is the fact I've met 'em) but hey, I wanna give it a shot. I once saw some of Akira and was pretty blown away, it wasn't too shabby. So I'm thinking of checking out some other animes, but am a bit nervous considerring how confusing they can be (I tried reading a wikipedia entry for Neon Genesis: fuck I didn't understand anything).
So while working I found two titles that struck my mind as being interesting: Howl's Moving Castle and Steamboy. Anyone got an opinions on these two, or any suggestions for other titles I should use as water-wings before I jump into the pool?

Anything done by Studio Ghibli. Everything else I find hard to tolerate.

I'm not nearly interested enough to go scour the internet to figure out who Studio Ghibi is, got some favorite titles by 'em or something?

I concur. There must be something you'll like in the rest, but it's so diverse and original that it's hard to predict your reaction.

most Ghible films own. Outlaw Star is good. FLCL is great but if you didnt get Evangelion I'd stay far from the FLCL (very far).

There's a lot of shitty anime out there, so if you watch anything you don't like don't give up on it, just try another series. Evangelion can be hard to understand at times, but it's definitely worth watching. It's very philosophical and thought provoking.
As for Studio Ghibli, you gotta love Totoro.

Spirited Away by studio Ghibli is a classic. My fav anime is Serial Experiments Lain, so if you like vague, freaky, confusing, dark anime that you really can't understand, check it out.

i used to be into anime a long time ago, so my recommendations may be more outdated ones.
i recommend seeing ALL of Akira, it really is as good as they say.
i also second the notion for Lain, it's good but weird stuff.
a good old one that's hard to find is something like "Legend of the Dog Warriors", which was a collaboration of multiple artists, so the characters on screen would be drawn in a different style than the background.
Ninja Scroll is another one that lives up to all the hype, at least in my opinion; stay away from the sequel, or so i've been told.
some of the other old ones that i can remember: Project A-KO, which is very silly but cool in that anime way, the one with Vash (can't remember the actual name, google "Vash the Stampede"), Devil Hunter Yoko.
Two of my all-time favorites, which you might have a hard time finding, are Mermaid Forest and the sequel; really dark stories about people who gain immortality by eating mermaid flesh. I remember a good soundtrack, and a fucked up immortal kid who killed someone by stringing wire across a dark hallway and chasing a person down the hall so they decapitated themselves.

Lain is my favourite too, but I also like very much Evangelion, Bebop and anything by studio Ghibli. Aslo Vempire Hunter D Bloodlust is very good.

And Goldenboy is a hilarious series, pity it have only 6 episodes

I would recommend
Totoro (great animation, cute, and good story )
Spirited Away (great animation and story)
Ninja Scroll (some violence , nudity, but solid story and animation)

My first exposure to anime was the horrible butcher edit known as Warriors of the Wind. Luckily, I have since seen Nausicaa in its proper form.

My second exposure to anime was the Curse of the Overfiend series, where I became vastly disturbed by tentacle porn and vaginas with teeth.

yeah, hentais are fun. they are so surrealistic. Normal porn never will give you such experiences.

"but?"
from what i'm reading here you're saying the violence and nudity is bad, BUT at least there is solid story and animation. much of anime is very violent, in a way no movie could be (except with cheesy special effects), so unless you're watching fluffy americanized anime (ie: pokemon or something) then expect, and ENJOY, stylized violence and the kind of nudity and sex you won't see anywhere else.

Goldenboy was awesome! I recently had a small gathering of friends over to try out an anime drinking game and we watched that.
Great success!
