Battle Royale Manga
For those who read Battle Royale a few months ago as part of the bookclub (pretty much my last months as BookClub in charge), I'm not sure if you remembered but there was a manga english-translation in the works as well. There are now 6 volumes out (I believe it will be 11 total). I currently finished the first volume and it was pretty damn good. The manga was not censored (it's a 18+ M rating). The blood and gory is there, and so is the sex. I don't think there is any glamoration of pornography though, at least so far.

Each volume are $9.99
I recommend this very much. As I read the next volumes, I will let you know if it stays true to the novel.
On a side-note, has anybody seen the Battle Royale I & II movies?
*ADDED*
If you live in the US near a mediaplay ( www.mediaplay.com ), you can order them, it takes about a business week to get to the store, and you will receive 10% off. The manga will come shrinkwrapped because of the mature rating, meaning it will be in perfect new condition.

I read Volume I & II, and it indeed stays very true to the novel so far. It's pretty graphic and gory as I expected, I'm enjoying reading this manga series so far!
Loved the film so much I had to read the novel and then started on the manga. After reading the book, I'm a bit dissapointed that the ending was changed as I initially thought the film ending seemed out of place.
I did however like the change to sugimura's character as without the martial arts training it makes his actions seem all the more heroic. There are however so many more enconters in the book with great fight sequences where neither individuals die and so your favourite characters fight multiple times.
I liked the use of flashbacks and thoughts in the film, although in the book I thought these were used excessively as a justification for peoples actions which isn't nessecary and I thought made the characters seem more two dimentional than without a backstory. What was up with the gay character, I've never met anyone so twisted and badly steriotyped, good choice not to have him as a character in the film as his character wasn't believable.
still, great book, great film and great manga.
I have the first two books of the Manga and so far it's pretty god damn cool. I've also seen the movie, though I prefer the manga, and yes, the manga is bloody and theres nothing censored. Oh yeah!

I own BRI and have seen BRII.
I rented BRII from my video store, here in SF. I don't have a DVD-burner, but if I did, I'd burn you all a copy. Check and see if it's not downloadable from some pirate FTP site. A lot of asian films are.
BRII is pretty good. Very anti-american. I won't spoil it for you. IMHO, not as good as BRI.
I have the book & the graphic novel, but I only have #3, now, because I gave #1 & #2 away.
There are some extra sexy bits about the "bad girl" in #3. I have to get to Kinokuniya to p/u the most recent ones.
What kinda film IS Battle Royale?
How would you sell it to someone who's interested, but is very careful with his DVD purchases (that's me, folks!)
"Battle Royale, a high-octane thriller about senseless youth violence, is one of Japan's best-selling - and most controversial - novels. As part of a ruthless program by the totalitarian government, ninth-grade students are taken to a small isolated island with a map, food, and various weapons. Forced to wear special collars that explode when they break a rule, they must fight each other for three days until only one "winner" remains. The elimination contest becomes the ultimate in must-see reality television. A Japanese pulp classic available in English for the first time, Battle Royale is a potent allegory of what it means to be young and survive in today's dog-eat-dog world. The first novel by small-town journalist Koushun Takami, it went on to become an even more notorious film by 70-year-old gangster director Kinji Fukusaku."
--From Amazon.com.
Kinji Fukusaku died while making BRII.
His son finished it.
I finally got to see BR I and BR II movies, and they were awesome.
I've read manga volume #6. The next volume comes out in June, and I'll make sure to buy it. It's really really good.
My vid store has 'director's cuts' of both BRI & II.
Have any of you seen these?
Own the BRI directors cut, the novel, vol. 1-6 of the manga, yet I remain a virgin for some reason?
If you look up Stereotypical Black Teenage Male in the dictionary you will see a picture of me...fucking a cat...with a suprisingly small penis
My Girlfriend: I'm not a cat.
Me: Sure honey...sure.
Director's Cut? I wonder how much diff. those versions are from the ones I've seen...
I've been slowly reading my way through these
They're awesome.
I'm having major problems finding the novel anywhere other than amazon though (I'm in the UK). Anyone got any ideas?
Forbidden Planet stores are all over the UK, they stock the novel, they're suually on the shelf where the manga is stored.
Zaki, you havent got book 7 yet? I must have just got it as it came out. It was nothing great, not as good as the earlier editions.

I finished 12. There shouldn't be that many more left...I think there's a total of 14? Man, what a great series.
well the manga goes on. Just finished #13. Excellent.
I didn't like the novel all that much. It was alright, nothing grand. Great premise, weak excecution.
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.
i read a few. they were pretty cool in this cheap way. i didn't think the art was great by any means but yeah, i enjoyed them. has anyone see battle royale 2? :-/

I found these in a friend's apartment and read (mostly) the first two. The back story of this is sooo rad but reading the manga was a total trial. I hate the art, there wasn't enough gore and there's too many fucking kids to keep track of. I should watch the movie/read the book and move on.

not enough gore? Try books 5 and up.

I cant get the book here... So im folowing the manga I just Finished book 10 and Im dying to see what happends. Its awesome!
Is the manga the same as the movies?
just read that the american remake will be put on hold for a while since the Virginia Tech massacre. could be years before we see it and even then it may just be straight-to-DVD. they say it will be hard to bring that film to the big screen, with all the kids killing each other and all.

I really liked the book and first movie and when I heard it was going to be remade I was sorta iffy about it. I still don't know whether to look forward to it but since they're postponing it guess I don't have to put much thought to it. I do want to try reading the manga a lot of people either really like it or just don't care for it.
I finished volume 11and what an ending!!! I want to finish the manga in order to see the movies.
Has anyone read this manga. Im on volume 11? is anyone interested in discussing those volumes?

but thats what makes it socialy relevant.....and such good fodder fr an exploitation movie.
I have volume 14. I can't wait to get my hands on the Ultimate Edition Volume 1, its the first four volumes in one book and a bunch of other fun stuff.
eeeeee! yaaaay! citing!

I have Battle Royale 1 on dvd. Its bloody terrific as in the whole movie is about killing. As for the second movie, I have been unable to get a region free or region 1 dvd. Anyone want to hook me up with a legit site to get BR2? Besides ebay because I had a bad experience with it.
