I recieved Haunted as a Christmas present, and my brother, a big Chuck fan, warned me not to read the first chapter on a full stomach. I read a few pages the day I got it, and I haven't picked it up since, not out of a lack of interest but because of my brother's warning. I mean, what with all these people fainting at it, who knows if he might be right? I can't help but think I might feel some kind of connection to a book if my first memory of it is profuse vomiting. Any advice?

Your brother was merely implying the story is a bit gross. He did not literally mean that if you read it on a full stomach you will fall ill. People probably fainted because of the line, "Hold your breath..." and tried to hold it as long as they could.

Also, you tell a bunch of people something will make them faint and a few are so impressionable they will actually make themselves faint.

Just read the fucking book. You might even enjoy it. Welcome and all that aswell.

I just threw myself into the deep end on this one.

Did not know guts reputation at the time when i read it, did not faint, but yes certainly just mentally picturing it in my head was disturbing. Thats the power of fiction and a strong imagination.

and yes just read it, if you can get through guts you can you get through the whole book, but dont think you get off that easy, there is certainly some equally disturbing stories ahead.

Your brother was most likely speaking metaphorically.
I just finished "Haunted" about two days ago, and "Guts" is a little disturbing, but it's not the most disturbing story in the book. None of them really bothered me, I would just let out a little "Ah! That's gross!" and move on. There were a few parts that made my jaw drop (literally) and I was so engrossed in the book that I didn't realize it until I tried to swallow and my throat was bone dry haha.
Read it, it's amazing.

If you vomit to Chuck's literature, you're probably reading it correctly. He is such a sick and straight-forward writer, his utter power is partially reliant on his symbolic insanity of writing.
