The reason why the bright person lacking a B.A. is not going to break into the job market is because of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. More specifically the Supreme Court ruling regarding said act which states that any job testing that can be construed as racially biased is illegal. This rules out any and all intelligence testing. If this weren't the case, the genius without the paper could get a job simply by passing an intelligence test. Many jobs simply require a degree to weed out the morons nowadays.
I'm confused. How is job testing of intelligence considered racially biased?

And yeah, to weed out the morons but also the people that lack discipline. I think they take note of how long it took to get that BA...

Doesn't it just mean employers can't selectively test based on race?

The testing of a job based on intelligence is considered racially biased due to the fact that test results are consistantly skewed towards whites (and also asians). One could argue that IQ tests and other tests based on intelligence are racially biased (and believe me this is a popular stance) or one could argue that there is a genetic difference in races (not popular for obvious reasons). Whatever the reason it creates an "unfair" application process and is unlawful.

Yeah, I fall into the poplular camp that believe that IQ tests have a racist bias because of the discrepency in education for different races.

I'll need to read up on the actual case law. Because I'm a geek like that Wink

Its all good. One could also argue that the bias is due to educational and socioeconomic factors. I prefer to just say fuck it. Your bunny makes me smile.

I'd like to say fuck it but I actually care a lot about this issue. I'm a socialist at heart and I don't really care about the "american dream" much except that it's not available equally.

I'm glad you dig the bunny.

Your socialism frightens me. But the bunny makes everything okay. I'd say the american dream isn't available equally because people aren't created equal. There are morons and there are smarty pants and it will likely remain that way.

I'd agree that a peope aren't equally intelligent. But that it's not determined by race. But I said that already. Don't fear my socialism, it's well tempered by Animal Farm. It's just a utopian ideal. Socialism is pretty much a failure in action.

Ah, thank god. At least you know there is no hope. Yes, people aren't equally intelligent and no, it isn't determined by race.

socialism has failed mainly because the places that have tried it werent really socialist. (IE russia, which had a ridiculosly stringent social structure, censorship, the death penalty etc)
but it probably wouldnt work anyway cuz people suck and would figure out a way to fuck the system to get what they want

i have to agree with mirkah that opportunity and education are more predictors then intelligence itself for job market performance.
take the prez as an example. dumb as a brick, leader of the free world. supposedly, but with cheneys hand up his ass, who knows what he really thinks?

Socialism would never work with human beings. Maybe with robots or lab rats or ants or something I dunno. We people aren't built to live like that. Fuck the common good, its all about me.

sad, stupid, but true.
maybe one day well improve as a race, or be replaced by hyperintelligent lab rats. either way works for me.

Because "people suck" is a pretty fair assessment. Power curropts. And if someone has to be in charge (and someone does) they will most likey work whatever system to their advantage at the expense of others.

Has anyone read the Andromeda Strain by Micheal Chricton? (sp) The "5th man hypothesis" is so genius.

Well she is talking about Michael Crichton's novel Andromeda Strain in which I can only presume that the 5th man hypothesis pops up in the book. How about reading it and seeing what she is talking about.

How about not being a fucking asshole Ubik? Perhaps you could try that.

I read the book but it was years ago and I've forgotten the details. Seeing as how I am in a third world shithole without the god damned library of congress at my finger tips I googled the shit.

Fucking dick.

The fifth man hypostheseis is that only one in five people will do the right thing for the greater good even if it goes against their self interest. Even to the extent that if they have to die, they will.

The main character in the Andromeda Strain is a general physician that gets yanked from a dinner party because there is a situation where a "fifth man" is needed and he's handy Wink

So when I said earlier, the concept is so genius, I really meant it's used in a genius way in the novel. It's a good read.

the only thing i really remember from the book is that there was a virus that mutated itself into a form that didnt hurt people anymore and the main character realized it just in time to shut off a big nuke in the lab. i must have been 12 when i read it.

I'm impressed and kinda shocked that nobody has compared this case to something that happened in a movie. In fact, this might be a record for the longest a thread has gone without one.

and just to burst your bubble -sorry, i have to -
its kind of like Hillary Swank's character in the ever-so-sexist, but excellent, Million Dollar Baby.
once more, i have to apologize. But you must understand, as a film student, movies are my reference point for everything i experience.

Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.
