how is it a bad thing to give minorities the opportunity for better jobs so their children and such wont have to be poor?

When you give a minority who is less qualified a fucking job. If you want to succed you have to earn it. Having a certain color skin is not earning it. The fact that a white kid would have to do far better in school in the states to get into a top university than a black kid is complete bullshit. So is the fact that you basically get bonus points when applying for certain jobs just because you were born a certain race.

anyway - being born white gives you a huge advantage in the world from the start. we live in a white society, mostly governed and ran by whites. i do think affirmitive action can be, and has been in some circumstances, taken to far. but an artificial levelling of the playing field has to be better then none in other circumstances. the idea is that some people, who at first dont seem up to the task, may actually be if given the opportunity.

Basically the finding was that INTELLIGENCE, not socio-economic background, not race not anything else, was the biggest contributor in a person's success.

Imagine that folks, the smarter you are, the more successful you will be. The fucked up thing is, it is one of the most controverisal books on the subject. Because it also found that the average black IQ is something like a full standard deviation below the average white IQ or some such nonsense (I don't remember off the top of my hand, nor did I bring the book along with me to fuckistan). Obviously a finding like this is going to meet some resistance. Primarily from believers in the american fucking dream and those that think nuture is more important than nature and so on.

I understand the good intentions behind it, and agree with the idea, but it's still racist to give someone an edge because of their skin color, no matter how bad minorites have had it/still have it in this country. If they made it about your economic background then that would be different.

Intelligence as it's measured by IQ tests actually goes up with more education. It's not static. It can also go down because of injury or excessive self medication.

Actually, level of education is a greater predicator of success than innate intelligence. You can be incredibly bright but without at least a B.A. i.e "proof" of said intelligence, you're going to have a difficult time breaking into the job market of your choice.

And yes, obviously a finding like that woud meet with resistance, especially from real scientists. It's not just an issue of nature versus nurture, it's an issue of how the authors gathered and analyzed data. (Yeah, yeah, I spent a few hours on google this morning).

But it's not! Because racism is the [I]belief [/I] that some races are inferior in some way. Saying someone hasn't had the same advantages because of their skin color doesn't mean you are being racist, it's just acknowledging the effects of racism.

The reason why the bright person lacking a B.A. is not going to break into the job market is because of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. More specifically the Supreme Court ruling regarding said act which states that any job testing that can be construed as racially biased is illegal. This rules out any and all intelligence testing. If this weren't the case, the genius without the paper could get a job simply by passing an intelligence test. Many jobs simply require a degree to weed out the morons nowadays.
