What is wrong with our peers? Every generation has the oppurtunity to creatively express its individuality, an oppurtunity to deffine its...youthfulness! I do not mean to come across as a downer but the only noticeable change that our generation has been able to contribute is the embarassing genre of "Emo" music (which is nothing to be proud of). What does that even say about this generation??? Hundreds of self-mutilating, fishnet-wearing teenagers (not that I have a particular problem with fishnet).

Comparing the Iraq war and the Vietnam war, from a youth’s point of view, they are relatively the same situation- back then there were young people willing to get the shit beat out of them at protests... and today? We have done nothing. We are so disinterested nowadays because we can be, who gives a flying fuck about politics or the fact that society is going to shit, we get a new mp3 player, cell phone, and video game on a weekly basis. We are groomed by the materialistic world that is Consumerism.

So we have no political interests, we certainly don’t care about other cultures in this high and mighty America, and our music is becoming more about the business than the art itself ( and the little art that IS still involved is pessimistic and self-absorbed).

What are we going to do about this apathy epidemic? I certainly do not want to be remembered as the generation that began the downfall of culture. So I beg of you true artists that are left, forget about the "underground". It’s a wonderful concept but you have to come out of hiding and shove inspiration down the throats of mainstream America. Develop new styles and make things every day and just start a god-damned renaissance! At least we’ll be able to say we tried.

And what are you doing? Posting about it on some message board, encouraging other people to do the hardwork? If you feel that strongly about it then get out and do something yourself.

You young people today, do you call those clothes? My mother wouldn't let me out of the house wearing that! And is that music? It's just noise to me...

On a more serious note, there's plenty of stuff going on in the UK at least. It's up to you to become involved.

Well, Trottier, thanks to your generation, so much of what we used to have to pay for--movies, music, etc.--is now dirt-cheap, if not downloadable and stream-able and copyable and transferable and manipulatable for free. If anything, your generation--assuming you are, indeed, seventeen--is putting Big Media out of business. So, thanks! (Sort of.)

The difference between Iraq and Vietnam is pretty simple, in my opinion. We didn't get into Vietnam after an attack in our own country.

Now I know that we're not really in Iraq as a result of the attack, but the mindset of the American people at the time we went is was on that allowed them to be convinced we were going over there for a good reason, part of which was to stop future attacks on us.

Obviously we know that wasn't the case now, but the first few years of the war people believed it because they wanted to believe it.

I don't think our generation invented the internet. I also don't think 17 year olds are pretending they are journalists, either. You can't blame us for the rapid collapse of the Big Media. The "Y" generation has been exploited. We grew up on what you gave us. If shits free, why would we not want it? You think our parents, our schools taught us morals? No. They bought us shit. You can't blame us for a supposed "fall" of society. We are the by-product of past generations.

To Trottier, a lot of young people are involved in politics. They discuss it intelligently all the time. Where have you've been? Maybe, underground. The war is years old. If you were conscious when it started, you would have seen protests you've been wanting to see. The reason why nobody is speaking out about it now, is because EVERYONE knows what happened over there, what the past Administration did. We're more worried about getting a job and paying for college. Do you have a job? You know how fuckin' hard it is to pay for college and find a job that pays enough? Do you know the uncertainty many of us feel when we graduate college and can't find a job?! How are we going to pay the massive debt college has given us? Why are we getting taxed for social security if its not going to be around when we need it? And now, because of the faults of our elders, politicians, and CEO's; we will be paying for the problems they created. Trillions of dollars worth. These are the questions you should be thinking about.

I would prefer a return to the artistic rebellion of the early 1900s, when artists like Charlie Chaplin, Diego Rivera, and the Federal Theater Project were making these great works (some gov't funded!) while also being investigated by the gov't for being un-American. That entire period (roughly 1917-1945 or so) speaks to me artistically in a way that no other era has.

i think trottier is talking about himself. i've seen people protesting the war all over the place. in fact, it's a dumb reason to protest. we have it fucking easy in america. yet we still complain about everything. well, i don't but this guy does.

There some quote that I can't find right now, "Is! Is! Is! The word itself insults me! I don't know what anything is, I only know what it seems to be."

Quote:

You're viewing a collective as a singular entity, rather than the product of many individuals.

If you're not doing that, you have nothing to worry about.

They are only similar in their stupidity. You likely don't know anyone who personally died in Iraq (I'm saying probability wise, not that "If you knew someone, you'd think dif'rint!"). You likely only know a handful who are over there, as opposed to a great number of your friends. Everyone who is there joined the military voluntarily. Kids don't have the choice of a jail cell over a draft, so no, they won't face a cop's batton. The situations are grossly different putting that into perspective.

While I oppose consumerism and apathy, I can't blame people for not caring. It's their decision, not mine.

Why should we? The individual has no impact on DC. This country was bought and sold a long time ago. We're just playing our roles.

Me, I'm anti-politics. Once we get rid of politics, no longer will we have to worry about apathy and crap like that, people will be free as a condition of their existence, aside from your typical 'criminal' acts.

Quote:

We?

No, you. I'll do what I do, you'll do what you do. But we won't do anything, because you and I are individuals.

If you can't tell, I'm quite anti-collectivist.

You want to be remembered for the achievements of others...I say do something for yourself.

I don't mean that as an asshole, but an individualist. Know that I'm not assuming you to be an average whatever, but if you define yourself by those around you, you will be grouped with them inadvertently.

We're an inevitably degenerate species. We're too dumb and too smart. There is no heaven, only hell on earth. Abuse others for happiness before you're abused yourself. That's advice that will never steer you wrong.

Well, to inform you, I am an awfully sarcastic person. Sometimes deeply as well as unnecessary. Again, I don't blame you for not noticing. I was very subtle about it AND it isn't exactly the center of my response BUT it is essential to understand.

My message would be that we are degenerate because we are different, in every aspect as individuals. (Mostly in minute detail, but with things that actually affect each other... everyone has their own views.) For example, people who are "too dumb" will clash with those who are "too smart" (and there will always be an abundance of both.) The idea is that there will always be opposite extremes. So when these are in conflict a "hell" is created on earth due to human nature. Human nature does include conflict, inevitably. Everyone has and will always have enemies.

Now the blatantly sarcastic bit. I only suggest you gain from others losses BECAUSE it's very easy to see that, with all of these "dumb" and "smart" people, that a MASS mutual effort would be needed to make any good change. By mass I mean like 80% of the population. Which is a number not even religion can accomplish.

What this has to do with the original post?
This is the beginning of the end. This is when people stop working together for what's new. This is when we start fighting over what's old. As a species, we've been around for a long time. Anything you could possibly do or think... has already been done (or is just downright outrageous.)

WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF IDEAS. "EMO" IS A PRODUCT OF THIS LACK OF NOVELTY.

Think of it this way. As a whole, the earth is a person. It is born, it grows, then starts to slowly die. We've finished our growing.

I could go on.

(I apologize for confusing structure, wide ideas, and mistakes.)

I think I estimate it pretty reasonably. Are we even capable for such potential? What evolution have we seen? How long does this evolution take?

Will we be able to create salvation from these unknown evolutions or ideas in time?

Maybe. I honestly don't know. I'm just taking a probabilities side. I see the world being held back. There is no focus.

But human flight before the end of civilization? Or any such salvation for that matter... doesn't seem very likely to me. (Maybe we can grow gills and live under the sea. It just depends on how fast our webbed feet swim compared to "fish people extermination" submarines.)

I see people getting dumber...... and dumber.

But just for statistic's sake i'm going to look up some demography and find out how long it would take a "revolutionary" evolution to make an impact, just because I'm interested in all this stuff. (another thing to to think about is how little evolution we see. How the more we advance in medicine and technology, the more we have the processes of natural selection taken away from us.) I will get back to you.

and for measurement purposes, if you don't mind predicting yourself how long the human race will remain dominant and, for the most part, in control of the earth would be very much appreciated.

and about the earth thing. Yes. Seriously. Name ONE THING that doesn't eventually deteriorate.

Thank you for naming the one thing that doesn't deteriorate. Even better, look at how the world uses it's energy. It gobbles it up. We're running out of that too.

(Now, I know about the conservation of energy, and I don't mean we're literally running out of the "scientific definition of energy". I mean the useful energy. Useful as in every day life useful. Not minute. Like the energy that fuels your car.)

But I was just making a point. I don't think we should delve into the uses and misuses of energy. Right now anyways. Energy evolution is a topic we can discuss later.
