As a side note, I've been to Thailand three times. I checked all the places I've stayed in down in the south.

Two have been completely destroyed and a couple really badly damaged. All had fatalities.

It's strange to have a way to directly relate to a huge natural disaster, but that kind of made it feel more real. How pathetic eh?

My cynical side tells me that we would not be getting such blanket coverage had the tsunami not hit tourist resorts.

Anyone remember so many front page pics for the Iran earthquake a few years back?

Thought not.
it's a coping mechanism commonly employed by males.

they fear showing emotion so they do the rooster strut thing and make jokes to cover it up.

that's my theory
I think you're correct.
yeah, tell that to 80,000 people. Hi there! You don't matter, people are being born all the time, BYE!! Smile

C'mon man, remember how you flipped out because you couldn't join the cult if it became pay? A messageboard? Why the fuck should anyone care about you? I mean, 22-30 people sign up for this place every day.

Yet, someone (actually two different someones) thought, you as an individual were too valuable and special a member to lose. Should I PM and tell them, hey, whateveh, shitloads of fuckers join the site everyday, no loss.

I just don't get this cynical bullshit, this tossing around of statistics and Holocaust jokes like it doesn't matter that 80, 0000 people JUST DIED and multitudes more are left grieving and homeless and injured.

What the fuck???
Alright, I said this and I'll say it again: I am not cynical and apathetic cause I like it or cause I want to look cool. I am in no way proud or fond of my apathy. It is just a phenomenon in me which surprised me. I haven't yet seen any footage of the event. I just occasionally see numbers. In a histroy text book, when you read that 100,000 people died in a single day during the first world war, do you cry? Do you really feel bad? Me, I feel amazed. Amazed at the number, at the infinite potential of mankind's evil. Same now. So what if Word War I was some 80 years ago and this was two days ago? I don't know these people, just like I don't know the people from 80 years ago. I acknowledge the horror of this disaster, I acknowledge the terror that must be inside the mind of every person who is in some way connected to this, but, unfortunately, I fail to acknowledge any kind of suffering inside me. If I knew in some way any person affected, I would surely be very sadded. But as it is, I am sorry, for those people, yet I am anable to find any true feeling inside. This all might change when I see the pictures of thousands of corpses or children's bodies torn apart, but now, this number, 80,000 is just impressive, little more.

I don't doubt it will keep going up, up, up, too. There is a huge potential for further crisis in regard to disease spreading in the aftermath. It seems it's alwready beginning in some places (cholera). If they can't get the bodies out of there quickly enough, the water supplied are going to be seriously contaminated and shit will hit the fan again.
There also Avian Flu to take into consideration, particularly within Thailand which was rampant with H5N1 cases in poultry this year.
The conditions could become perfect for the mutation.

I gotta put my two cent sin on this one:
Onan, son of Judas, 'spilled his seed upon the ground' (unsure of quotation). That is said to be masturbation I think, but am not sure.
This is only a sin because he was refusing to provide an heir for his brother through his brother's wife whom he had to marry. So he would have sex with her but didn't want to give her a child so he would spill his seed on the ground.

The Bible talks about what you do in your head is sin before you even do it. So, if you can masturbate just to feel good, fine. That's not sin. But if in order to do so you must think of all the dirty pictures and what it would be like with a certain person, etc.. then it is a sin because the thoughts you are having is sin.

I know this is terrible, but I have all the horrific images from the Tsunami: Wave of Destruction featurette on abc last night running through my head to the tune of Russian Dance by Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite. It's all edited like an MTV montage or something. It will NOT STOP.

ironic, yes. those things are more creepy because of the innocent music. So we have these sweet memories or our childhood playing through our head while we are watching our worst fear on tv. That's just messd up. What are you going to think next time you hear a lullaby? "just wait till that kid grows up and is brutally murdered by her step-father while her mother watches because she was never wanted in the first place"
simply horrible

I think its a scary thing that Bush is only sending $35million. This makes me want to vomit on my shirt. I guess if the money is used to kill children its ok, but when its to save children its a problem. Once again Bush was on Vacation when something bad happened, everyone needs vacations, but it took him something like 4 days to make a statement on what happened. I dont know maybe he couldn't read the word tsunami off the teleprompter. Im done my head hurts.

I hope the entire human race dies.. we seriously don't deserve to live. We destroy the earth, and when something like this happens, we bitch about it.

more animals die unnaturally everyday than humans ever will

but then again, it's just this whole "civilization" idea. You know, where no one adapts to the environment. Everyone should watch "The Gods Must Be Crazy"...

and the saddest part is that I'm a part of it. I guess to escape I'd go out and live in the bushes naked.

I sound crazy.. but we humans deserve death.

video clips of the tsunami hitting. some good quality, some low quality, all crazy nature-induced human tragedy. there isn't really any graphic stuff in here, mostly it's the waves washing through the city, but there are a few shots of people getting washed away and such.

oh get off it. Jesus. This thread is about natural disaster. Only a fucking liberal could politicize mother nature. People are dying, and we are sending aid.

And hello, it's the holidays, of course he was on vacation. I was too, does that make me bad. Vacation is what you do over holidays. Maybe you should remind him not to go on vacation before the next huge devastating natural disaster happens so he can be in the White House waiting. (sarcasm... cause that obviously doesn't even make a shread of sense.) And what the Hell difference does it make if he even made a statement right away or not? First you're trashing the guy and what he does, and then you're saying that, what, you're hanging on his every word? It's not like you give a shit what he said in his statement anyways. And it's not his statement lessens the death toll of a natural disaster.

so fuck you. You wanna help the effort for the victims of the tsunami, then help. Send them money, join the red cross, but don't confuse the issue. Natural disasters are not politcal moves, dip shit.

I apologize if this comes across a bit strong, but seriously, This isn't about Bush, it's a tidal wave caused by an earthquake. That's all.

I rather liked the "Post-disaster" future world kind of idea. Like MadMax post-apoclyptic only natural disaster version.

if I could, I would

while I was cleaning the dishes, I thought: maybe, just maybe, we humans COULD improve. But then I came to my senses.. no, we cannot.

we're all just PEOPLE

more "intelligent" creatures.. just because of our "brain power", that doesn't mean we deserve to live. Honestly.. we're evil ugly things.

Consider it all as a misunderstanding? I mean no ill will. I agree that the situation is devasting and terrible and can sympathize with your frustration at seeing people make light of it.
if I could, I would

while I was cleaning the dishes, I thought: maybe, just maybe, we humans COULD improve. But then I came to my senses.. no, we cannot.

we're all just PEOPLE

more "intelligent" creatures.. just because of our "brain power", that doesn't mean we deserve to live. Honestly.. we're evil ugly things.
i don't really think that you would. i think it's a cowardly, ignorant statement in the face of this nightmare. it's easy for you to say, leisurely washing the dishes and typing on your home computer, that these people deserved to be ripped limb from limb, or else die from cholera and the rest of it in the aftermath. the only "evil, ugly" thing here is your mockery of the destruction.

I don't mean these people specifically deserve to die

I meant everyone. Every single person on planet Earth. We do nothing but destroy. And what little adaptations we do make aren't sufficient to achieve diddly squat.

but, whatever.. I don't feel sorry for people I don't know. I never have, never will. And it's not like I chose this life, no one chooses his/her society.

I think people grieving over this is stupid. I mean, over here, in one meat abattoir a few years back, over 5000 cows would be butchered per day. And that was a smaller plant.

I don't see anyone overly grieving for them. And don't give me that "we need to eat them to survive" bullshit.. we're not even a part of the food chain anymore.. you know, buying packaged animal in a grocery store isn't exactly instinctual.

are you seriously comparing the deaths of all these people to the deaths of cows ? your not one of these PETA people that compare killing chickens to the holocaust as well are you ?
and since when has deciding what to eat ever been instinctual? the very first caveman that decided he'd rather half woolly mammoth tonight instead of the leftover sabretooth tiger, because the mammoths blubbery goodness just tasted better, gave up eating for purely instinctual reasons

Let's just remember that there are people who have lost family members, some may be the only one left in their family. That's who I grieve for. The child still clinging to his mothers corpse, too young to know better. The wife who lost her husband and children, I cry for them. I grieve for the people who are still dying, that weren't killed immediately and will most probably die despite our best efforts.

Stop.

Stop pretending.

Stop pretending to be intellectual.

Stop pretending that you know what goes on in the world.

Stop. Just stop.

We do not deserve to die. We are here, and we exist. Just because you have become disillusioned with the world doesn't mean the rest of humanity has, you sad little creature. We are not garbage, or trash. We are not crap. We aren't all these vile monsters you make us out to be. We are not ugly or evil, we simply just are. There is beauty everywhere, it is all around us, along with pain and suffering and devastation. There is beauty in nature, and beauty within humanity, if you would just open up your eyes, and see it for yourself.

Climb out of your defeatist shell. Realize there is more to the world then your own self-centred and self-indulgent philosphy that we should all be inolated. Look at you. LOOK AT YOURSELF. Look closer. Realize that maybe you aren't crap, maybe there is a world of possibilties out there for you. Stop hammering the nails in your coffin before you even get to the grave. Being cynical doesn't make you enlightened. Being nihilistic doesn't elevate you into any higher a level of conciousness. BEing self-destructive and close minded doesnt mean you are right.

I know this too.

So what if the world is seems to be everyones favourite place to dump their garbage and pass their crap? Instead of bitching about it, instead of sitting in your warm house, typing away, with a family around you that probably cares about you, instead of compalining and lamenting the existence of our race, DO SOMETHING. Sure you can bitch and whine, sure you can make up excuses, and cry over cows, but the fact is, what are you doing to change this? Have you actually done anything positive in your life? Have you ever tried to maybe change how the world views things? Or do you just sit, perfectly in your own anonymous nature behind the monitor screen, writing out bad poetry and how the world is going to self-destruct? How humans are nothing but garbage and we should all die and burn in the flaming pyres of hell?

Stop being afraid.

And don't you dare start comparing cows to people.

While this particular disaster is in focus now, and it is indeed of crisis proportions, there are many devastating things going on all over the place all the time. RIGHT NOW suffering is happening, it did yesterday, and it will tomorrow. Probably always will. How really do we decide what is worth grieving over? Don't say when the numbers are high. Is the death of some small child in Malaysia worse than the death of a child in Canada worse because the numbers were higher in Malaysia? I guess my question is, in the face of all that is grievous and devastating, when do we decide to be sad? How do we determine what is enough? I could conceivably spend the rest of my days in absolute despair with the amount of shit that goes on ... so tell me, is the percieved insensitivity of some of those here anything more than a difference of degree on the continuum of Constant Grievous "Choice Making"? At what point is the line crossed, is there one? What is the socially acceptable amount of "sympathy" on shit like this?

All this self righteous, "NO! NO! Humans are precious!" For christ sake, lets all throw darts at a fucking baby duckling. Really, get over yourselves. (vidalia aside, we are reconciled)

well put, and if I may add, C S Lewis writes (I won't quote cause I can't remember it word for word) that the heights of joy we soar to will always be matched by equal depths of grief. This is ho wlife works. If we protect ourselves from feeling hurt, we also halt our ability to be free and joyful creatures. Joy and grief are inversely proportional. This is how it must be.

Having no grief for all these people in the midst of their tragedy makes me think that you, Akiama, just live a protected life, and it must be terribly sad. I don't know what has happened to make you feel this way, but you are beautifully made and you need to realize that the life you posses is precious. So were the lives of those people who died.
