MUMBAI, India – Indian coast guard vessels and helicopters worked Monday to contain oil spilling from a stricken container ship that collided with another vessel in the Arabian Sea, India's defense ministry said.

The Panamanian-registered MSC Chitra smashed into the St. Kitts-registered MV-Khalijia-II on Saturday near Mumbai's Jawahar Lal Nehru port. The accident caused the MSC Chitra to run aground and list heavily, ministry spokesman Capt. Manohar Nambiar told The Associated Press.

Helicopters sprayed chemicals on the oil spill to prevent it from spreading, Nambiar said.

The amount of oil leaked was unclear. The environment minister of Maharashtra state told reporters Monday about 2 tons of oil was pouring into the water every hour.

The MSC Chitra was carrying several thousand tons of oil products such as diesel and lubricants, Environment Minister Suresh Shetty said, adding the government was consulting foreign experts on how best to contain the spill.

The ship was still listing deeply Monday. The MV-Khalijia-II had less damage and posed less risk; its cargo wasn't disclosed.

okay obviously the objective it seems to me is to dry up the natural resource as to propel us into a further war in the middle-east maybe not to take over osha but just like to rape right through it with fear and paranoia as to what are we to do to ...shit....I wonder what we could if our oils supply was damaged

what pisses me off is the appearance of apathy towards this situation and others like it ***GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRararwrrrrrGGGGrrr**

People really need to understand where there oil comes from.

The number one oil producing country in the world:
Saudi Arabia

Number two:
Canada

Why would America, one of the, if not the, richest country in the world go to war over oil, when the largest oil producer is in there pocket, and the other is right beside them. It makes no sense.

Besides everyone knows the war in Iraq is preparation for the ensuing war with Iran. Now why people are Afghanistan is confusing, since there is nothing of value in there, I guess it actually is a peace mission. Who knew?

not the saudis our relationship with them as well as most of those on the osha board are weak. There are two middle eastern countries on our side, however we are occupying them both in a military siege.

With the Saudi people; yes. With the Saudi government; no. So as long as the US buys large amount of oil, essentially funding the entire country, making it incredible wealthy. Until that stops the Saudis are in the US's back pocket. Their smart enough not to bite the hand that feeds.

Now Nathaniel, kiddie porn comes from south east asia; Thailand, Vietnam, you know. Now for opium, well I guess you have me on that. But if it was only for opium then there would be no need for such a large occupation at this point, there would've been only counter insurgency forces, not peace-keeping and counter insurgency forces(amongst others.)

Actually, Russia is the number two producing oil country in the world, but that's a different story. What you need to think about is how much oil is USED per country.

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0922041.html#axzz0wG1kwstQ

The US uses about 20 MILLION barrels of oil per day. 20 millions! That's a whole big bunch of oil, we produce around 8 of that. Which means we've got to get 12 million barrels of oil per day from someplace else. We could buy it from Russia, but they can sell their supply at a higher profit via pipeline to Europe. Now that they're all capitalist and stuff.

Thing about the Gulf, is that it makes this lovely little triangle for shipping. You can hit the Saudis for their 8 million, Iraq for their 2 and Kuwait for it's 2 on one trip and then zip right through the Suez back across the Atlantic home. Makes for a higher profits when you're shipping more for less. Halliburton and Texaco-Chevron aren't run by idiots, they've taken an economics class or too.

Closer countries like Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil are impracticable because there just isn't enough oil to make it a priority. Also, we suck at fighting jungle wars like when we tried to take over Panama for cheaper oil shipping.

Did I just turn into Giggan?

It's not like it's 20 Billion though. 20 million isn't really all that much, what's that come to? around a 1/4 of a gallon per person?

1 barrel = 55 gallons of oil. 20 million barrels = 1.1 billion gallons of oil a day.

That's around 400 billion gallons of oil a year.

Milk is a renewable resource. Oil is finite. Once it's gone, it takes another 100 billion years to renew.

Sure, whatever the math is. I was reading somewhere about running out of potable water being a bigger crisis than the oil crisis. I'll do some research and edit it in later.

4 gallons for every man woman and child in the US is a lot of consumption. Scary to think about it that way.

Just for the record, I do NOT drink 4 gallons of milk a day.

unless chocolate milk counts.

Actually, Russia is the number two producing oil country in the world, but that's a different story. What you need to think about is how much oil is USED per country.

Common misconception, the Alberta oil sands uses a completely different method of extracting oil, it's entirely done by surface mining. Since statistics only include conventional production, which only amounts to the offshore oil rigs off the Yukon and North West coastline, a declining source of oil.

But isn't it constantly renewing itself from 100 billion years ago? I know we're using probably more than it can renew right now but still. Also, 100 billion years will never pass. That's ridiculous.

I was being facetious with the 100 billion number and as I looked it up it appears no one knows how long, but it's in the 100's of thousands of years instead.

The point was it's easier to make milk than oil. There's a significant difference in production time.
