So who's running?
I'm having a hard time keeping track of all the people who've thrown their hat into the presidential ring so far.
Barack Obama seems to be a general favorite so far, but all I know about him is that he's kinda vaguely black and people are peeing themselves with excitement over it.
Hilary Clinton I have no respect for. Look at what she put up with from Bill. Enough said.
Rudy Guliani I might give thought to.
Chuck Hagel is from Nebraska and pulled a radical upset this week in the Senate when he refused to back a plan to send more troops to Iraq. He might run on the Independent ticket, although he's currently a Republican.
Who else?
There is hope, but not for us.
Yeah, because 1) I know about sports and 2) that thread would definitely go in the politics forum.
There is hope, but not for us.
I don't know what it is but I am really truly horrified at the prospect of Hillary becoming president
I hope the Obama guy kicks her ass
I'm going to be 18 in september of 08, and I think I'll vote for Obama. There is also John Edwards, Kerry's running mate, and John McCaine or something. Spelling is off.

McCain/Edwards or Clark/Edwards would be good for me. I want a military man in control of the military.
I would also like to see a senator. I'm over these governors. I want someone with the some pull in the congress.

I really like McCain
i wish he would have made a greater push for the thing back then
i've met obama - he's great - he has my vote, and i hope you all will consider him as well - the debates will be worth watching this year for sure
should be interesting

The thing to remember, folks, is the Depublicans will nominate someone, the Republocrats will nominate someone, and then there'll be a show they call an 'election.'
When it's over, no matter which so-called rival party's candidate wins, you lose. Big time.
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.
Hilary is a bad idea. She'll polarize the vote, and nothing will drive up the numbers for Republicans than voting against a Clinton. Go Obama!
Hillary can't win. Neither can Obama.
Hillary will unify the GOP against her. She'll lose.
Obama can't beat Hillary for the black vote, so I fail to see how he'll win the whole thing.
Of course, these have nothing to do with how good or bad they are. This is just where things are headed.
Jeb Bush has been quietly distancing himself from his brother for some time now. He'll appear as a dark horse candidate at the last possible moment, unify the GOP again, and he'll win. Get ready for more Bush, folks. It's a lot more likely than you'd think.
This is why, as Chix says, we lose big time. Not because there aren't good people we can elect, but because we're too big of a country to adapt and accept that we're not the "greatest country in the world" anymore. We need to play catchup on many fronts, and that starts with us as citizens, not in Washington. We need the same harsh medicine that companies like Ford are swallowing if we're going to surivive. No politician can get elected if they prescribed such a thing.
Even if Hillary could win, it won't lead to the change we need. It will be more of the same bullshit. We'll still wave little flags and foam fingers proclaiming "We're #1" on the deck of the titanic while illegal immigrants work for $1 an hour to patch all the leaks.
Oh, Hilary can win. If she gets the nomination, it'll be the biggest voter turnout for a Presidential race ever. Young voters who don't typically participate turning out to vote for her (out of sheer novelty? Naive liberalism?) on one side, and sexist redneck types who don't vote much turning out to vote against any chick getting the gig on the other. You'd have yellow dog Dems who just can't pull the lever for a woman, you'd have liberal Republicans who just can't resist the idea of a woman, any woman, being the 'most powerful man on earth.'
But at the end of the day, I'm still saying the general public loses no matter who takes the election.

I disagree only in the sense that I think the cause and effect are backwards. Your wording implies that the loss is a symptom of the election results. I'd argue that the election results are a symptom of something that was lost quite some time ago.

True. Basically, I'd strip away 99% of the growth the Federal government has exhibited since Reconstruction if I had my druthers. I'm talking about doing away with entire cabinet-level departments, trashing almost every Federal regulatory authority, abolishing the income tax, etc.
So who gets to be President doesn't much matter, because the problem in so many cases is that anyone is in charge at all.

you overestimate Hilary's appeal. Most young people don't really care for her, I think she'll be a big time flop. I think Rishardson is gonna pull ahead from the dems
as far as repubs, I like Tommy Thompson but its was too early to tell on either side, give it another few months to start to form together.
I may be overestimating her appeal, but maybe not. If you look at the early Arkansas days with the Clintons, they almost imploded after his first term as Governor, largely because of her aggressively leftist approach. She reinvented herself and became a big reason Clinton was able to leverage the governorship of such an unlikely state into the Presidency.
So while I find the Clintons morally reprehensible, they are both consummate politicians, and I can't picture any of the Republicans being able to compete with her. Newt, maybe, but there'd be big faction of liberal Republicans who would want to battle Hilary by trying to outliberal her.

I wish Joe Biden would run and kick everyone's ass and I do indeed love Wesley Clark, he should have won the nomination last time, I'd vote for Al Gore if he ran again considering he got ripped off last time. Tom Vilsack would be pretty cool. If any of these 3 run I'll vote for them.
To say Al Gore got ripped off is a bit silly. Up to the day of the election, every poll had that race in an apathetic dead heat. Nobody seemed to much care which asshead won, they were both ridiculous boobs. The Florida recount thing was a maneuver to try and fix the election by recounting only the counties that could theoretically put Al Gore over the top, and Gore's people would STILL be counting ballots if they hadn't come up with the numbers they wanted.
Was there cheating? Sure, on both sides. Imagine if Nixon had spent the Kennedy years whining the way Gore has. And Nixon, scumbag that he was, was absolutely robbed in 1960, mainly by Daley's machine in Chicago.

i was hoping this was going to be a Carl Lewis thread
