Obama makes it official - your next prez?

whether you are left, right, middle, independent, or indifferent i strongly urge you to keep an eye on this man, and support his bid for the presidency - i've read one of his books, heard/seen him speak several times, and done SOME research into him (first black president of the harvard law review), met him as well, and he has my vote in 2008. i will also campaign for him - he is smart, aware, and could really change the way things are sucking in this country right now
i am by no means an expert on barack or politics, but i hope that you all will consider him when you vote - over hillary. clinton for the democrats and over guliani or mccain for the republicans
no matter your age or race or history with voting, this is the year to make it matter - you saw how close it was last year, and i still believe bush stole BOTH elections, from gore and kerry
peace,
richard

Yeah, I know it's fake.
like that matters
I hate to say this because I don't want to discourage people from researching Obama and considering him as a candidate, but I have a serious doubts about his elect-ability. Sadly I think that the majority of people who actually vote in this country will have a hard time pulling the lever to vote for a half-black guy whose name rhymes with Osama.
If you think that the average voter applies greater depth than that to their decision making process, you've been hanging around too many optimists.
Again, I hate to say this, because I wish and hope like hell that I'm just being one of those cynical pessimistic idiots. I really want to be wrong on this.
I saw portions of Obama's speech today and liked a lot of what he had to say, particularly by claiming he wants to put useless wedge issues aside. Of course it will be interesting to see once reality shows up and he has to make good on that. The red state Christian base makes up 30% of the vote, and they're often an all-or-nothing deal who are swayed by the very things he claims should not be part of a presidential debate.
It won't take much for the GOP machine to twist those very words into something that marginalizes the entirety of that 30%. "What do you mean we shouldn't be talking about gay marriage? How dare you!"
Then again, it's only 30%. Maybe he can win without them. I wish him luck.
What, no poll?
When we call soccer 'football' the terrorists have won.
Yeah, throw away your vote!
ok, I kid... but seriously now....
No offense, but I think it's hilarious how people feel that they are actively participating in a democratic system by voting for someone who will never account for more than 2 or 3 percent of the popular vote, which won't even get them a single electoral vote anyway.
I'm not saying this guy is bad, don't get me wrong. He seems level headed, for sure.
Case in point : A friend of mine, who is the most politically passionate person I know, has never once voted for someone in an election above city level that ever had a shadow of a chance.
In the end, what's the point?

I just like to laugh at super passionate people who get so mad at me because I'm not voting for someone who has no chance at winning anyway. Even if I end up voting for the guy that loses, at least I can say my vote almost counted.
Let's be honest, it's going to be a long time before we see a black man in the oval office, and probably just as long before we see a woman running the white house again. We tried it with Clinton, and frankly I can't believe she's running again.

Well, I know a lot of people think I throw my vote away when I vote third party, usually Libertarian.
Beyond that. Let's say you think abortion is murder. You vote Republican to get Supreme Court appointments willing to overturn Roe. Pro-life Republicans have been in the White House for all but 12 of the 33 years since. How many Supreme Court appointments did Clinton get? Two? Carter had none if I recall.
I'm not trying to start an abortion debate, I'm saying here you have a core issue for conservative Republicans, and even with a huge winning streak for the White House and a run of luck for dying/retiring justices, they can't get it done. It's an illustration of how utterly pointless 'mainstream' politics is.

I had this talk this morning with a girl about it being really weird suddenly, seemingly like a TWILIGHT ZONE about how we'd never get a black president or even a female and that yes, the times they are a-changing, but how much of this will actually happen? What are the chances that Obama and Clinton won't be treated as novelties? The bible belt of the States accounts for a lot of votes right? How many of those people, percentually will vote for Obama or Clinton?
And imagine this, Eddie Murphy joked about it in RAW or DELIRIOUS, but man, Obama is liable to get shot as soon as he get the cue for presidency.

if all the people who think their vote didn't matter, or who voted third party or green party or fringe or whatever got behind obama, i DO think he'd have a shot
if the youth of america, if the minorites of america voted obama, he'd have a shot - how many people voted in the last election? 50%? 60%? that's a lot of unhappy, and disenfranchised people that could make a difference
if there ever was a time or place to get off you ass and get involved with an election, THIS IS IT - if you do NOTHING more then just VOTE, it'd make a huge difference, even if you never make a phone call or campaign or knock on a door
i'd love to see people like the cult get behind obama

So what the fuck would change if Obama got elected?
So what the fuck would change if Obama got elected?
Something stuck in your side much Spike?
If Obama or Hillary get elected, it's not like the country's going to magically improve. There's still a large and solid retard contingent holding public office, and a large and solid retard voting bloc keeping those people in office and electing replacements when they either age out or die. There needs to really be a sea change in American politics and that probably won't happen for a couple generations.
In the meanwhile, electing people, no matter how progressive, will do fuck-all. It's like how the tiniest bit of cancer in your body can be dangerous and can spread. When you have cancer it's a good thing to have cells in your body that aren't cancerous, but it doesn't mean you don't have cancer.
but it is a start - and he wants to work with a congress and senate that is now democratic, so we may get a lot of good bills passed - lots of great things could happen - and maybe he'd get re-elected - a lot can get done in 8 years
i think the US is the only major country in the world without a healthcare system - we need to get out of iraq, and stop policing the world, we need to do a lot of things - we still haven't gotten the minimum wage rate increase approved (i think)
nobody can say bush has been a good influence the past 8 years - look at how low his approval rating has dropped

Al-Qaida wants Obama? Barack reponds
By: John Amato @ 3:45 PM - PST
All Spin Zone:
That’s what Australia’s Prime Minister John Howard says:
“If I were running al-Qaida in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and be praying as many times as possible for a victory, not only for Obama but also for the Democrats.”
Obama's camp responds…
"If Prime Minister Howard truly believes what he says, perhaps his country should find its way to contribute more than just 1,400 troops so some American troops can come home," he said. "It's easy to talk tough when it's not your country or your troops making the sacrifices."
and this:
"I think it's flattering that one of George Bush's allies on the other side of the world started attacking me the day after I announced," Senator Obama said in Iowa.
"I would also note that we have close to 140,000 troops in Iraq, and my understanding is Mr Howard has deployed 1400, so if he is … to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest that he calls up another 20,000 Australians and sends them to Iraq.
"Otherwise it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric."

The only thing that will bring the kind of change people want will require sacrifices people that most Americans aren't willing to make.
Until the pain of staying the same is more than the pain of change, nothing is going to happen; Americans like their comfort far too much to risk it for anything that doesn't guarantee a better tomorrow without the discomfort of uncertainty.
Revolution is a good thing for complacent countries like ours where we have so much 'freedom' and, as has been pointed out here, so few actually participate in it. I had no idea that so few people who could vote actually were, and that's a painless way to attempt change.

If we're saying that you're voting for someone to overturn Roe v. Wade, we're saying you're in the minority. There may be a roughly even percentage of Americans who are pro-life or pro-choice (right around 40% a pop, I think), but the percentage of Americans who don't think R v. W should be overturned is around 63% and those who think it should be overturned isi right around 30%.
I'd say if the Republicans can't get that done, it's an illustration of how they know they'd be crucified by the population.
What cracks me up is when someone's candidate or minority party loses so many times they think voting becomes pointless, so they feel they need to criticise the system. No, it's not perfect, it probably needs to be updated to accomodate more than 13 states, but for what is largely a two party system, it gets the job done. I say if you're sick of the Dems and Reps, get out there and educate the public. Probably 75% of the people out there don't know what the fuck the Green party or the Libertarian party or the Labor party is.
And while we're at it, who says that a president can't change the US for the better in 8 years? 4 years even? I mean, sure it's a helluva lot easier to fuck things up than it is to make things right, but that doesn't mean that shit can't get done. The amazing thing about the world is that things happen. Do you think congress would've been so hip to jive on the Iraq war if we weren't already hunting down some mother fuckers in the region? I seriously doubt it, but because of 19 hijackers, 4 airline jets, and 1 day, we've been in the middle of a shitstorm for the last 3 and a half, 4 years. I reckon it could work the other way too. No matter who we've got in the White House next is going to vastly improve foreign relations, hopefully wrap up the mess in Iraq, put a fork in Afghanistan, and get back to making the Palestinians and the Israelis kiss and make up.
If Rudy Giuliani runs, he'll be the next president. Hillary will get the vote for running, but she won't win the presidency.
Rudy Giuliani already has the popular vote. All he needs to do is organize a campaign and beat Hillary.
Barack is a personable guy, but doesn't have enough experience under him yet. Give him another five to nine years, and he'll be a real force to reckon with. I don't see him getting the bid to run in 2008.

While I certainly agree with you that Giuliani is a force to be reckoned with if he's got the bid for the presidency, that's all dependent on IF he's got the bid. He's middle-of-the-road enough for most political ideologies to vote for him, but the question is, is he right enough for the Republicans? Last I heard he was trying to make his stance on abortion a little more ambiguous, but he's still got a few more issues where he takes a more liberal stance than I'm betting the Republicans want him to have.

THE ENEMY WITHIN!
This is the "dude" that some people want to be the next President of the United States
Scary isn't it???????
Speaking bluntly, in a real presidential election, no one in their right mind would vote for Obama. That would be like voting for the guy who just moved in down the street from you, that you wave to from time to time but don't know a thing about. That's Obama. He's been a US Senator for about 100 days, give or take a week. Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a radical Muslim while admitting that he was once a Muslim, mitigating that damning information by saying that, for two years, he also attended a Catholic school.
Obama's father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. was a radical Muslim who migrated from Kenya to Jakarta, Indonesia. He met Obama's mother, Ann Dunham, a white atheist from Wichita, Kansas at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Obama, Sr. and Dunham divorced when Barack, Jr. was two. Obama's spinmeisters are now attempting to make it appear that Obama's introduction to Islam came from his father and that influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned to Kenya immediately following the divorce and never again had any direct influence over his son's education. Dunham married another Muslim, Lolo Soetoro who educated his stepson as a good Muslim by enrolling him in one of Jakarta's Wahabbi schools. Wahabbism is the radical teaching that created the Muslim terrorists who are now waging Jihad on the industrialized world. Since it is politically expedient to be a Christian when you are seeking political office in the United States, Obama joined the United Church of Christ to help purge any notion that he is still a Muslim, which, ideologically, he remains today.
