New Orleans Evacuated Today
A level 5 Hurricane is expected to hit tomorrow. There's a good chance that New Orleans as we know it will be destroyed.
Excerpts from this article:
The mayor of New Orleans has ordered hundreds of thousands of people to flee the city as Hurricane Katrina nears with winds of up to 160mph (257km/h). Ray Nagin said Sunday's move was unprecedented. It came after Katrina grew to a Category Five hurricane - the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Forecasters say the low-lying city could be in the eye of the storm, which is expected to reach land on Monday.
"The city of New Orleans has never seen a hurricane of this magnitude hit it directly."
Bush has issued a state of emergency in Louisiana and in neighbouring Mississippi, freeing the path for federal aid for those affected.
Only three Category Five storms have hit the US since record-keeping began.

Holy crap.
1: that's what they get for being goddless
B: anyone know how long ago did the record keeping begin?
3: I wouldn't go anywhere near the Superdome, even in the best of conditions.
I've been trying to call my ex-husband's grandma all day to see if they got out (she's never evacuated for a hurricane before, but she's 84 now), and I guess she got out because her phone just rings and his aunt isn't answering her cellphone.
Hopefully they either got out of town or are spending the night in the Superdome.

They've been tracking since 1886 --

I've only been in the Superdome once and that was to see Pink Floyd. I wouldn't spend the night there though.
I read about this earlier. Those who couldn't evacuate in time could take shelter in the Superdome. Here's hoping...
It's so very sad. The French Quarter, gone?? I used to live in San Francisco and every once in a while I'd admire a bridge or the skyscape and I couldn't help but think " this could disappear in two minutes (And I'd be dead)".
i love the french quarter--that's the only reason to visit new orleans, i think. i only wish i'd had more time there when i had a chance, before it got washed away to the sea.

I hope she's ok. Hopefully you'll hear from her or the aunt soon.
I've never been to New Orleans, had always planned to visit but never got there

It'll still be there - it's been there for so long -- if it gets destroyed, they'll do a good job of rebuilding it.
It'll definitely be underwater for a little while though. When I lived there, we had 2 category 5 threats - one was Andrew and it went to the west of us. The other was one that started with a G in 1998 -- and neither hit - but my family called because CNN was reporting how disasterous it would be if a hurricane came up the mouth of the Mississippi, while the local channels were saying that it wouldn't be hitting us.
We'll see though. I just hope they got out.
i was homeless in metarie (the even slummier next-town-over) for two weeks, and i couldn't enjoy everything i went down there for (the food, the atmosphere, the cheap drinks) because i had everything i owned in the back of my truck, including my dog. i couldn't go anywhere without fear of having anything i cared about stolen from me, so it was a disappointing two weeks. so i would love to go back and actually do some of the shit i wanted to do.

What the hell were you doing in Metairie? Yuck.
being homeless.
being homeless.
When was this? I lived there from 1990 - 2002 (not in Metairie though). I'd have given you a dollar to stay at the YMCA.
oh, i guess it would've had to have been like august of 2002, i think.
oh, i guess it would've had to have been like august of 2002, i think.
Oh - that's when I left.
I just tried calling again and now it says that all circuits are busy...
there's been talk for a long time in the engineering community about how xtensive the damage from a catagory five direct hit on the city would be. The levies are only good if the storm surge stays belown 15 feet, the surge for this storm is expected to surpass that, meaning that lowest places in the city could be under as much as 30 feet of water (up to the 3rd story). The pumps that would help remove the water could be damaged and there would be no way to remove the water until the storm surge passes. If this storm does what its predicted to do, there wont be much of a city there for a long time.
also the super dome is not rated for hurricanes, and they are not supplying food to the people there. and water and sewage is likely to not work for a while. so the people there will have a very fun week.
seriously I hope everyone gets through it safely and I hope that anyone's relatives or friends had the god sense to leave the city for higher ground.
The worst thing is that %70 percent is below sea level, meaning that is going to get a lot of water, big floods ahead.
Whatever damage the wind doesn't do, the water is going to do it.
These last hurricaine seasons have been insane man. If they keep at it, i doubt many people can endure this year after year.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
Lets look on the upside, maybe Ann Rice'll get disappeared!
you sonnuvabitch ! i read down this whole thread and that was what i kept thinking about this whole mess and now thanks to you i have nothing to say
with all that water youd think it would wash away that smell too but i bet the place stinks just as bad afterwards
everyone that leaves should pour out a box of 'rainbow fresh Tide' on their way out

That smell will never go away.
Man weather's cool.
it's gonna bitchslap us into extinction for shitting all over it all these years
so i wake up this morning and im flipping through the tv halfway listening to all the hurricane news and i start to notice there saying streets and neighborhoods that sound familiar so i pay a little closer attention and it turns out half the city of cincinnati is being evacuated too !
except its just for some lame railroad car thats spewing plumes of styrene into the air for miles around and not something as cool as a hurricane

It's cool, you get to see all trees and all that, getting bent like little twigs. If you go outside during it, you almost feel like the wind will totally take you.
I have been at sea, during one, and the waves are freaking huge.
However the "it can kill you" part is not so cool, nor the damage to property, etc.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
More danger to come. If the water level reaches the missisipi river, then you can imagine...
I think its safe to say the city is fucked up for many years to come.
People robbing all the stores, of special note the gun department in the Kmarts.
I saw somewhere on tv that supposedly a white shark got in the flooded areas, can't find anything on the web.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
i'm going to sound insensitive here but the media coverage is worse than 9/11. if these people are so distraught then why stop to put their pretty faces on the camera? fuck a camera. i felt sick to my stomach after watching the news last night. do they think we want to see hospitals full of 'critically ill babies'? do they think we want to see the old lost black man searching for his wife who blew away in the wind? just give us the facts please. no more creatively written emmy-begging stories. we feel bad enough already goddamnit.
don't watch the news unless its the daily show
oh man...
The Daily Show is better than the news usually.

coffins are washing up on the beaches.

I hope that Mississippi or Alabama Homeland Security guy chokes to death on his cornish game hen tonight for making no distinction between the looting of food and drinkable water and the looting of jewelry and personal electronics.
People should die of thirst because they couldn't afford to leave or underestimated the effects of the storm, right?
Jesus, I'm probably on some no-fly list now for saying that.

Shit i watched the special on african babies dying day after day.
I see CNN as entertaining news not much different than the Daily Show, except the fact that the other regurgitates the drama in a not as funny way.
but hey that's just me.
So...We are still going to die. Right?

I disagree. They are the middle man. Nothing beats the unintentionally funny stuff that happens in CNN.

Whew, those people trapped there are going fucking crazy. And I don't blame them...
not to preach or anything...but anyone who can afford to send a small donation to those people should...they truly need help.

well, im really glad that bush decided to take a few days off from his vacation
what a trooper...
not to preach or anything...but anyone who can afford to send a small donation to those people should...they truly need help.
Even though i can empathize completely with bad experiences with hurricaines, I can't say i am overwhelmed to donate.
If i was still in the Coast Guard and i was there i would gladly help them, but i don't see how a couple of bucks is going to make a difference and I do need the money myself.
I can however donate blood, i guess i can do that.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
I sent Conner to school today with a bag of food to get her school started early on the donations to these victims. I was surprised that they hadn't already sent the kids home with notes to do this very thing.

apparently, according to the AP, white people find things. Black people loot.

where's the pissed off asian watching his store get looted!?
arabs...ah whatever...i'm tired.
Yeah, it's great that people are donating all this money and blood, but people are dying of thirst right now. Props to anyone out there with a boat rescuing people, props to the "renegade" bus drivers, anyone directly helping out when people need it right now.
They're going to need a lot of funding to eventually get these people back into some kind of housing and provide medical care, but that's really secondary when people are still stuck in the NOLA convention center without any supplies, or stuck in their homes or places that can't be accessed by helicopters.
Just like how donating to (legitimate) tsumai relief helped, but not the people trapped under mounds of rubble.

I dont usually watch CNN so I just get The Daily Show to show me whatever stupidity has occured that day on CNN.

I disagree. Look at the trash bag vs. the bread.
To me there is a clear distinction.
I'm ashamed to call myself American today and ashamed of our government. What is happening in New Orleans is a travesty of apocalyptic proportions that can surely be remedied. The elected and appointed officials keep saying, "Let's save the people and criticize later!" That would be fine if they were actually saving the people.
I feel helpless and horrified at what is going on. If it weren't for the media NO ONE would know and the people of New Orleans would be suffering and dying in silence. And I'm afraid if I donate money, it will be just as mismanaged as the rescue efforts!
Yeah, it was fucking ridiculous how the president was smiley explaining how "help will come" and shit.
He is very very fucking laid back in his approach. Very different than his demeanor in 9/11.
and things will get worse, so whatever help is comming, is not going to be enough as time is wasted.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
Shit.

Thanks, TV news, for sanitizing fucking everything.

It's surreal. There are PLENTY out there that think it's best to go in, shoot to kill, and not have a thought as to how INSANE these people must be by now, and how it dictates their behavior. If people trapped there are shooting at helicopters, then they must be trying to make a point. It isn't like they don't want to get out--it's the opposite. Had the craziness and chaos not occurred, things wouldn't be moving along the way they seem to be now. Those people don't have the TVs and news and whatnot that we do, and after three days, I can understand them thinking that they have been left to die. How is it suddenly such a major priority now to get them the hell out? If this country is as supposedly strong as we like to think we are, why hasn't more been done before it took people reaching a critical mass?
The threat of anarchy alerted the media, they start showing dead bodies and condemning how little has been done to get the people out, and ZANG! Suddenly the Government starts taking quick action to do something. If it took/takes some crazed behavior to get the press and then the Government to show and realize the hardships occurring there, then so be it. If a National Guardsman had to be shot in the leg to get things rolling, so be it. We can send goods and relief to other countries, we can mobilize and attack a national threat in a heartbeat if necessary, but a natural disaster WITHIN the U.S. takes THIS fucking long to be addressed. No food, no water, the heat, mass psychosis setting in, days pass, nothing is seeming to happen... no wonder it took civil unrest to speed up the process. And I stress "process". It's still a hairy situation. But maybe the Government will realize that they've got to do more in situations like this, and not just "help" a bunch of people that don't even want us in their always-unstable country.
And as a side note: Madde found these earlier (and I myself didn't want to even mention how almost all the faces I saw were black...) but still, I'll repeat them: http://news.yahoo.com/photo/050830/photos_ts_afp/050830071810_shxwaoma_photo1 & http://news.yahoo.com/photo/050830/480/ladm10208301530 . See the little captions on the side... white people "find" and black people "loot". Self-explanatory. I don't give a fuck if people "loot" shit... the place is DESTROYED, and anyone that is still there--I'm sure--doesn't want to be. AND didn't have to be had the Government acted sooner.
The media had to start to show the dead bodies, not people killed in the hurricaine, but the bodies of old people and babies and kids that have died because they had no food, no water, and no feeling of oncoming help AFTER the storm. Blame? Yeah, but I'd rather blame and point a finger towards the source of a horrible (and preventable) situation even if it isn't fully deserved so long as it makes the process get moving like it should've days ago. It was said earlier today that "New Orleans was now Baghdad-on-the-water". THAT is not a good thing to hear about an American city. Three days after the fact. Not good at all.
I was posting like a madman all day in the SS, as were others. Wenknee used to live in New Orleans and knew/knows a lot of people that are/were still there, living before the storm; me, maybe I just like to get mad at the Government, but I don't care. It bothered me, and I'm not questioning my motives for being so upset earlier.
And I'm still upset. We ALL know where our so-called national capabilities are located... and it isn't in the U.S. And it isn't just in New Orleans either--Mississippi and south Alabama need to be addressed also. Florida, well they got some funding pretty quick, but at the risk of sounding more biased, I'll just stop. For now.
there are something like 500 busses coming into houston to stay at the astrodome. my mother works for the state of texas so her office is helping to issue food stamps so she has to work all weekend. gas stations are supposedly running out of gas. boats are being hijacked, including a newsboat. i swear to you the newscaster was floating on a fucking raft doing the news. that point alone almost makes watching the news worth it.
I disagree. Look at the trash bag vs. the bread.
To me there is a clear distinction.
You may be joking. But when I showed the pictures to my coworker she said the same thing and she wasn't joking. Anyway if you want to get specific the white guy has a backpack and you don't know how many people the black guy is sharing with. Maybe the white guy is a rapist, maybe the black guy is a Christian, maybe he's a liar, maybe the white guy is a really generous tipper at restaurants. It doesn't matter. I'd be looting/finding/taking if I were there. I'd be trying to survive. If the law enforcers aren't there to protect and serve then I wouldn't respect the law's abstract ideals that have no relevence in a situation where I felt abandoned by them.
yeah i forgot to mention i'd be looting as well...

I read about this earlier. Those who couldn't evacuate in time could take shelter in the Superdome. Here's hoping...
