Legal Highs: Mephedrone

Does anyone have any views? And is it as popular in other countries as it is in the UK?
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
I don't see how hard it would be to illegalise it. Users are clearly acting as 'guinea pigs' until they (scientists/Government) can obtain enough evidence to illegalise it or not. Just makes you wonder how many people have to die before they will. Look at GBL ('Come in a bottle') before that was made illegal. Even now that's only a Class C drug.

i'm not for allowing young kids to make decisions with potential consequences they don't understand, but this bit gave me chills:
Police in the region are taking a tough stance to combat the growing problem of Mephedrone. Anyone caught in possession of suspicious substances is arrested, taken to a cell and has their DNA and fingerprints taken. Obviously, if the 'substance' turns out to be Mephedrone, there will be no charges.
how orwellian. terrible invasion of your privacy to be picked up for having something 'suspicious' in your pocket and have them keep your fingerprints and DNA, regardless of what the chemlab decides you've got.
The consignment came from a flat in a redbrick block near Victoria Station, where we observed a man of Middle Eastern appearance with a goatee beard, in his 30s, hand out brown envelopes and fake bank notes to callers. He was accompanied by a fair-haired man dressed in T-shirt and jeans.

MIDDLE EASTERN? BEARD? FUCK THEM! RAHRAHRAHRAHRAHRAH.
This shit sounds cheap and nasty but the Daily Mail are fucks so I disregard 70% of this article. People have this around univerisity and these scummy boys sell it for like £10 per line!! It's sad really. They are guinea pigs! I think it's tough to illegalise and control new things like this and it will take a while but legal highs are big right now and something 2 molecules different will come about right after that. It's lame.

I'm with you there. Even if the stuff were illegal it would be wrong to take such actions, but considering its legal.... That makes it even worse.

It sort of disgusts me that this Gabrielle girl is being shown as an innocent victim. If she had died from a cocaine overdose they wouldn't have her looking so pretty. So what if its legal? Its a party drug and you have to be willing to try shit you have never heard of to die from it. I've never been that stupid.

Every few years a couple new research chemicals become available online. In the late 90's you had the psychedelic analogs like 5-MeO-DiPT, DPT, 2C-T-2 and 2C-T-7. Word spread about them online, someone took too large of a dose of 2C-T-7 and died. There was a small amount of media coverage about it then, and the DEA made it a schedule 1 drug. The same thing happened with AMT a short while after.
The article mentions this Gabrielle girl had taken a drug cocktail, which is a bad idea with lots of classic illegal drugs, even more so with "research chemicals" that don't have a long history of use.
Mephedrone has only been available widely for about 3 years. It seems it's popular in the UK, Ireland, Australia and Europe. It was banned in Israel in 2007.
This article says mephedrone is only 2 molecular tweaks away from being pure ecstasy, which isn't true. mephedrone is 4-methylmethcathinone. methcathinone is a shitty stimulant similar to methamphetamine in structure.
Most drugs are deadly if you take too much.
The Daily Mail say whatever shit they feel like. I don't think (THINK) that they can really take DNA and fingerprints until you're charged with something.
This is just scare mongoring reporting, I'm surprised they didn't call it a pandemic or some shit.
Ugh, they should probably make it illegal, since it's dangerous and all. Having 11-year-olds mess with it is bad. They don't know what the hell they're doing. It would mostly be to keep it away from them, since older people could probably get their hands on it anyway, illegal or not. (I know it would be more expensive then, but I don't really care)
They brought it safely to her house. If you want her to go to some sketchy neighborhood to get it from likely armed men who, if on any sort of uppers, are doubly paranoid of getting robbed or whatever and pull guns on everyone.
Want more kids to use this? Ban it then, so the people who control distribution don't have to worry about maintaining enough of a business reputation that you're not selling dangerous drugs to kids.
Making this illegal does nothing more than force you to pay for a war on the drug user. This hurts some people and helps no people.
Also, I'd question whether the facts in that article are even accurate. I'm not saying I know anything that's not in there, but drug stories tend to be significantly less accurate than regular stories.

I KEEP SAYIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!
i like you, i really do
i like you, i really do :)
I like you too
Let's get some mephedrone and stay up all night hugging. I hear it's pretty safe and no one has ever died.
I was worried yesterday because no one was acknowledging anything I said, it was like I was a ghost and I didn't know it yet and only Ritt could see me!
well, ritt does have that one spooky eye that can see dead people.
but you're still alive, i wouldn't worry.
Eww, wouldn't want to try that.
Make meph illegal and people will still acquire it. Only thing that will change is it will go up in price. The government needs to test these substances quicker and make people more aware of the short/long term side effects. People will always take drugs but as long as they have better information about them, they can make better judgement when taking them.
Treat me mean, I need the reputation.
Surprised the Government haven't just legalised all illegal drugs and whacked a big fat tax on them.
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
I don't know about our country but I watched a documentary on the drug war in America and the thing is prison is such a valuable industry they won't legalise things because of the money they'd lose or some shit and about how all the government is helping sneak in cocaine for some reason too. Very informative but I forget the details.
The government probably already get a fat cut from all the illegal drugs being shipped about, without having to put heroin on the pharmacy shelves for everyone to get hooked on.
Edit:
I posted a bit slow but yeh something like that.
Treat me mean, I need the reputation.
Cops love the drug war because it gives them a whole class of filthy rich people to chase who's toys they get to play with when they're done. Literally. They seize drug dealer's properties and use them to fight other drug dealers. It's a self-perpetuating war.
And re: The prison industry, more prisons are popping up in America that are private corporations that the government pays for the service of using the prison to house inmates. What it means is, you get the economic efficiency of the free market, only it's being used for the dark ventures of the State, to house druggies. The private companies running prisons for the government have been lobbying the government for stricter drug laws, because drug laws, are for them, assured income. The quicker the government can arrest these people, the fatter these companies' pockets get.

I am snorting it now it's pretty amazing stuff, very mellow high.

Prepare to feel like shit tomorrow.
There's a certain part of irrationality to it, but I can't help saying it : drugs terrify me.

the prison industry was privatized a long time ago. that's what it is now, an industry. it's a little bit disgusting. and the gov't makes tons from drugs busts everyday, tons. they'll never legalize it.
Michael Pollan claims in The Botany of Desire that in 1982, the amount of marijuana domestically seized was one third higher than what the Reagan administration had previously thought was being GROWN.
Someday I think we'll look back upon the illegalization of pot as hilariously Victorian and backwards. To stem such a tide is basically impossible, regardless of whether it's right or wrong.
That being said, I'd also never do anything as stupid to snort a drug that's such an unknown quantity. Don't you people know that your nose is a direct channel to your brain!?
There is hope, but not for us.
I concur. Dirtiest come-down ever.
They're trying to, allegedly, classify it as a Class A drug here after links to psychosis and weight loss.
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
Can a Brit explain your drug classification system to me? Is A the "worst"?
There is hope, but not for us.
Generally, yes. Class A drugs are considered to cause the most harm.
Class A drugs include: Ecstasy, heroin, cocaine, crack, amphetamines (only if prepared for injection), psilocybin mushrooms. If caught in possession of those you could face up to 7 years imprisonment or an unlimited fine.
Class B drugs include: Amphetamines (such as Speed), Cannabis, Ritalin, Pholcodine. Up to 5 years imprisonment and, again, an unlimited fine.
Class C drugs: Ketamine, GHB, tranquilisers. Up to 2 years in prison and an unlimited fine.
If caught dealing Class A drugs, you could face life imprisonment. Dealing Class B+C drugs, you could face up to 14 years.
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
A is the worst, B is the second worst and C is weed and stuff. I can't believe magic mushrooms are a class A, it doesn't make sense!
Weed is now Class B.
I think it's stupid even having a class system. It should be either legal or illegal, I say.
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
I also think it's ridiculous that GHB is Class C. "Coma in a bottle"? Yeah, that sounds user friendly!
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
That is quite weird, especially since methamphetamine is class B. I don't know about the law, but in terms of social acceptability in the US, mushrooms are one of those "I tried it once in college" type things.
There is hope, but not for us.
It's just as wacky as the US Controlled Substances Act. Marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug, which is supposed to be for "dangerous" drugs that have no currently accepted medical value (federal level, obviously). But cocaine and methamphetamine are schedule II drugs and can be prescribed.
For magic mushrooms, and basically all psychedelic drugs, they fall under the "no currently accepted medical value" umbrella and that's why they're class A/schedule I drugs.
It's redonk that they organize by usefulness and not by potential for harm or addiction. But I guess if they did, they'd have to put alcohol as Schedule II, minimum.
There is hope, but not for us.
I think the only reason Magic Mushrooms are Class A is due to their hallucinogenic-type effects. It appears that all psychedelics are Class A, probably due to the 'bad trip' factor.
Then again, dissociatives can have the same effect and Ketamine is only a C!
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
That makes about as much sense as the concept of government itself...a substance that has a built in 'don't do me again if you don't wanna feel like this again' feature is banned because people may want to keep having bad experiences.

The fact of the matter is, drugs are classified on their potency. It's irrelevant whether they have long term negative side-effects. If that was the case, I'm sure tobacco and alcohol would be A.
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
Before 2CB came out there was 2CI. It was also legal. I took a bunch of it in high school, and now I wonder how that's going to affect me 50 years from now. No gooder.
Remember, remember the fifth of November, the gun powder, treason, and plot. I know of no reason why the gun powder treason should ever be forgot.
Yeah, I m fully agree with you this shit sounds cheap and nasty but the Daily Mail are fucks so I disregard 70% of this article.
The worst experiences I've had, whilst on drugs, have been on Mephedrone. It's a terrible, dirty drug.

Terrible how? What happened?
There is hope, but not for us.
Short-term: nosebleeds, headaches, 3-day-long comedowns, tremors, memory loss, decreased circulation/circulatory problems (purple knees), paranoia, worringly heavy periods.
Long-term: (as previously mentioned) memory loss & paranoia, repeat throat infections, kidney infections, psychological dependence.

I haven't heard of it before, so I would say it's not that popular in The Netherlands yet. Could be soon though, who knows.
