Hmm... I think that they can speak whatever damn language they wants when they pickin' them cotton fields.

at work the other day a man ask me if I knew spanish in spanish. My only response was to shrug, shake my head no then responde with

Most of the people in North and South America speak Spanish. America (and Canada, America's Hat) are the freakish exceptions. Plus Brazil.

I actually kind of like it when people next to me speak in Spanish. I still have to hear it, but I don't pick up on most of it.

I live in an area with a high population of Hispanics, mostly Puerto Ricans. I work at City Hall. Constantly, people come in and get PISSED at me because I don't speak Spanish. They EXPECT someone to be available ALL THE TIME who can translate for them.
Even when I worked at the mall, I had the same problem. People trying to order pretzels in spanish and then yelling at me for not understanding. Very frustrating.....

and the killer is, most of them know english, they just don't want to bother speaking it

I speak spanish mostly fluently. Thats the one thing I dont like either. Sometimes they'll see my name plate and see Im hispanic so they start talking in spanish, moments after they were speaking to me in english and making sense. When they do this I tell them I dont speak spanish.

the one woman I work with speaks spanish, and she gets bothered by the same thing. some of the people refuse to talk to me, they tell me they don't speak english, so I have them talk to her. and then she tells me they speak perfect english. weird

I just want to say on my list of five languages that are awesome, Spanish is second. Sorry for the cliché number one. This is all to do with how the language sounds, and how it comes together too.

Yeah, some town in Texas changed its official language to Spanish. The states that border Mexico have lots of illegal immigrants. Lots of immigrants send one here legally, then that one imports their entire family illegally, though.

Anyway... illegal immigrants are a problem for sure, they don't pay taxes, they do take some jobs, and they should not be here illegally, but it's more complex an issue than that. The US should really legalize them and make them subject to taxes like everyone else. Currently, this system in place now, is failing like nothin' else.

In this neighborhood all the ATMs have 'Press 1 for English, 2 for Vietnamese'
It's a bit of a different situation as they were being exterminated in refugee camps and we brought 15-20,000 of them here....while the parents rarely speak English, most of the children do....and better than most of the other minorities that were born here.

David Suzuki hates my town because of some internment camp. He even wrote a book about it, and swore at my school when he came to tell us about climate change!

Alrighty. I dunno, I don't think there's that many more people in Asia than in the US to have a higher percentage of people over there speaking English (which is most people over there's secondary language in most cases) than the home country of the language.

What I really should point out though is that, from what you said it sounded like you think the country is sort of half Spanish now, which I don't *think* is true. That's like a rumor... much like there's a huge amount of black people in the US, which is also sorta wrong. Most of the minorities are in cities and such, there are fewer black people still scattered about in some of the rectangle western states. Same goes with Hispanic and Mexican people... they're mostly in the "border" states and in the cities, I think.

Minorities are still minorities, don't worry!

The first report talks about all the cities in all the world, though. So that means every big city in every country, plus the "littler" cities in all the countries in all the world. So you add them all up, that's a *lot* of land and a lot of people. So, believable. Just don't forget all those smaller cities, and all the southern and western cities that don't have minorities anyway. When people think 'city' it's usually NYC, Berlin, Glasgow, Chicago, Austin, Tokyo, etc, etc... there's also like, uh, Aurora, Illinois and Poughkeepsie, NY. You know what I mean?

If you add all of the southern and western and small cities that have little to no minorities and combine it with every farmer and person that lives in farmland, sprinkle in every rich white yuppie type in every suburb in every state and mix in every white businessmen and working class and blue collar guy, drop in every smelly white homeless man and woman and every buck-toothed, inbred white trash person... it's like land of the marshmallows.

Maybe that's what you were talking about then? That makes sense, I guess. If you add all those other countries that don't primarily speak English, all those people throughout Asia and Europe, etc, and compare them to the bunch of English speaking countries (USA, Canada, Australia, UK, etc.) that's reasonable that they outnumber us. But, it's still their secondary language. If everyone in the US had to take Portuguese as our second language in high school, for instance, we'd probably outnumber the Portuguese people too.

yeah i know poughkeepsie has tons of minorities, lol. What I was saying is they're counting, in that first article, EVERY city... from smaller cities that no one outside the state knows about (like, say, Aurora and Poughkeepsie) to the big ones we all think of.. so when you think of it that way, even including say Baghdad and such, it's not that surprising that a huge portion of the population is in cities. Know what I mean? I'm not saying they don't have minorities there, but they don't have minorities in many southern and western cities.

I remember driving through Poughkeepsie to the chance and the buildings in your city totally change like in a flash. It was like nice building, nice white building, nice white building... BAM! Ghetttttooo!!!

Also, funny story. Me and a friend got out of a concert from the Chance this one time and we were hungry and driving by that Wendy's that close and my friend remembered "eat great, even late!" so we pulled in the drive thru, ordered, and parked. My friend didn't get what he asked for. I was going to drive around for him but he decided to walk up to the window even though there were like twenty cars there. He was on the opposite side of the window, with cars in between him, yelling at the window lady to exchange his burger. And oh man. I decided to move the car a little bit, and he turned and thought I was leaving him... he ran to the car with his arms flailing with a burger in his hand and it was the funniest thing I've ever seen. Of course, telling it now, it won't sound that funny. You had to be there.

Indeed. I've never been to Mexico either, myself, but... well, you don't need to have been to Africa, for instance, to know how badly many people there have it. People need more empathy, in my opinion.

My brother recently came back from Africa, and just the pictures of the people with their ribs sticking out makes me realize what the conditions are like over there (as if I weren't already aware).

In other news, why do people always get pissed about Mexicans/Hispanics that can't speak English? Maybe it's because of where I live, but I run into way, way more Middle Eastern/Arabian folks who can't speak English than Hispanics. And in my narrowminded whitegirl experience, those people are way bigger jerks than Hispanics. So why do we get pissed about the Spanish-speaking ones? Is it sheer numbers? Is it the fashionable thing to latch onto and get pissed about? WHAT?!

Sorry I grew up in New Mexico, and for the dumb ones yes it is a state, where you can't tell who is legal and who isnt and no one cares. Secondly, can you tell me where your tax money is going to? How about to the 600 iPods FEMA bought then lost? or did it go to the 2000 laptops the Dept. of Homeland Security lost?
