So your home in NOLA is flodded with raw sewage, gators and the odd shark fin sighting. then you get jacked by the local 25th street rollers, cruising on a bass boat, formerly the pride and joy of a diehard Foxworthy fan.

they bus you to the hell hole that is Houston, where the humidity and temperature make you long for the death and misery back home.

and then today your neighbor, Galveston starts mandatory evacuations, and Houston's mayor calld for voluntary evacuations and business/school shut-downs for the added time one should take to evacuate. (Houston just issued mandatory for 2am Thursday.)

but where do they take you, the NOLA refugee/evacuee/whatever-eee? you get bussed again to three lovely destinations of your choosing: Ohio, Oklahoma, or Arkansas.

and you still haven't had mail for weeks, nevermind a regualr life, regular meals, regular medical care, school for your kids, clothes that fit, etc...

I like Texas, I've lived here all my life, even on the coast for awhile, but ugh, this is gonna suck the root.

Rita is Cat5 with sustained top winds of 165 and pressure of 904mb and falling (bad.)

ugh.

Hi - I'm preparing to evacuate as I write this and it does suck - it's hard to look at everything you own and think that it might not be here when you return. But...it's just stuff. To hell with it all.

My kids headed north with my parents today and I stayed behind so that I could get everything ready here - pack up everything that I'll need (mainly paperwork proving that my children and I actually exist) should I come back and my apartment being lying 2 blocks away, tape the windows up, as if that'll do any good to hold them semi-together when 100mph winds come racing through here. I live about 30 miles from the coast, but I've got water to my east and I'm in a mandatory low-lying level - 15 ft of water, they say - otherwise I'd be staying. It's nice and quiet here today.

But...I'm leaving in the morning - we're expected (involuntarily) to be out by noon tomorrow, so I'll go at the last possible minute - after all of the frantic people (including my extended family) that left today are on their way to wherever they may be going.

I'm feeling fairly calm. I already had my 'oh fuck' moment the other day when I saw the path that they projected it to take, but I'm sure it'll come back at some point in the night.

So now, I've gotta finish digging through my stuff and trying to figure out what to take and what not to take and put everything that I don't want to get wet in garbage bags on my kitchen counters.

1) it's Bush country, he doesnj't want this repeated in his backyard, he'd probably pull everyone out of NOLA and send them to H-town.
2) the two 'canes are merely weeks apart
3) more white people involved (caveat: more trailers)
4) the respective mayors are gun shy and smarter for it,m issuing evacuations as we speak
5) galveston is the home of the worst disaster in US history, the 1900 hurricane that killed thousands.

just saw on the weather channel - this is the top 5 most intense hurricanes ever, top 3 in the atlantic.

run weeknee, run.

OH...I'm going at my own pace. It's not hitting for 2 days, plus, I'll be stuck in a house with family members that I more often than not try to avoid - FOR DAYS. I've already had enough of them today and I'm not even there - and these were just phone calls. I'll still be alive when it's all over though, so I guess I just need to concentrate on that.

And yes - they've been preparing everyone to evacuate since yesterday. I just rode around for about 40 minutes trying to find a gas station with gas ...

Good luck Jen. Take your photographs with you just in case. Maybe some of the boys very favorite toys so they have something familiar if you do come back to the worst case scenario.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you and all the others. (my equivelent of saying "you're in my prayers")

Most of them here have their windows boarded up. If worse comes to worse, I'll bust open the kids' piggy banks, but I did take out cash yesterday, so I should be ok for a while.

Power Rangers and Transformers are already packed. I'm "accidentally" forgetting Legos because everyone else will be complaining about stepping on them...

And I'd much rather hear that fingers will be crossed for me than I'll be in prayers! Smile

No I don't think that. I also wont really have my fingers crossed the entire time. I will uncross them as needed to eat, type, brush my teeth etc.

Holy smokes, I'm so out of the loop! So busy with DL work and freelance projects that I haven't turned on the news in a few days. I didn't even know about Rita until opening this thread! Hope everyone gets through this one better than the last one, especially people I know. How far north are you heading Jen? Look me up if you make it to the Bluegrass State. And let me know if you need anything. Seriously.

Well thank you! I'm heading to my grandma's near Austin - she lives on the top of a hill - it never rains there (but I suspect it might on Saturday) - the kids are already there -- last minute decision on my part ("Can you please come and get them and take them with you when you leave this afternoon because they're making it very difficult for me to get anything done"), and if I hadn't just sent them with one pair of clothing a piece, I'd be taking a road trip! But they're expecting me tomorrow.

If I come back and there's nothing left here, I will be taking a road trip!

Does one need to evacuate goldfish? And if so, how exactly does one evacuate goldfish?

I was thinking about just putting garbage bags down on the seat and strapping the aquarium in with a seatbelt, but your idea is probably better.

Yeah, Kasey's idea is better. The tank is expendable and glass things are like really heavy things--bad to carry in the cab of your vehicle in case you have an accident. However, do buckle them in if you go with that option. You don't want a citation for unbuckled goldfish.

Ok...plastic bags it is, assuming that I have some left. There are only 2 of them and the tank is a little plastic thing with a periscope. They (the fish) may not be a necessity. If I do bring them, I'll be sure to buckle them in next to my cat's carrier, which will be strapped in on the other side - she is a necessity.

Well then, we know what the goldfish are....extra cat food. Go ahead and put them in with the tuna.

Jen, I hope you can get online from Austin and let us know how it's going. I have a friend in Austin who says they're advising people there to stock up a week's worth of provisions and so forth. It could be a rocky ride for everybody, even that far inland.

I won't have internet access up there (my grandma lives outside of Austin on 100 acres - cows aplenty, but no cable). I may go into Austin to escape, so I'll try to find a computer. There's gotta be a computer somewhere in Austin, right?

I'll have 2 little smarty kids with me, who I'm sure will get sick of blowing up cactus with fireworks. So we might drive into Austin and I might call said painted man with many animals.

I'll try to text message - assuming that my cellphone service isn't cut off. Otherwise, I've still got the list of phone numbers from the meetup - so one way or another, I'll let y'all know. I'll be ok up there. My grandma lives on a big hill. It's the coming back part that's going to be scary.
