I Can't Even Scream...
William Rehnquist is dead. I have to get out of this country.
It's not easy having a good time.
Even smiling makes my face ache.
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Now the President gets to add a new justice to court and pick a new Chief Justice too.
And based on every other appointment he's made, this country might as well be called Jesusland once he does.
It's not easy having a good time.
Even smiling makes my face ache.

What's new? Rehnquist was one of the two dissenting justices in that case.
What's new? Rehnquist was one of the two dissenting justices in that case.
A more conservative chief justice, antonin scalia or clarence thomas, will set their own agenda for the court. with no sandra day O'Connor, abortion rights are in jeopardy.

More conservative than Rehnquist?
Who voted against Roe vs. Wade, desegregation, gay marriage, and advocated a moment of"silence" in public schools.
All day I’ve heard people talk no longer about the merits of each others opinion, rather, calling people of other political alignments racist, sexist, socialists, idiots, and of course, soulless heathens. A more accurate way of describing this is actually "everyday" and "just now getting to me". I sure fucking hope this peaked about 30 minutes ago when I had this conversation with some one I greatly respect. (It wasn’t really this short, I didn’t know who this man was at first)
Other guy: "Chief Justice William Rehnquist died of cancer!"
Me: "Oh, that’s a shame."
Other guy: "Yeah, another chance for Bush to fuck things up."
Me: "...Oh... I thought it was a tragedy because he died of cancer."
Let’s look at this for a second here, Rehnquist was appointed by Richard Nixon, he was against roe v. wade, he is for school prayer, he is a far right conservative. His replacement is going to be closer to the center then himself. From a democrats stance, there is no reason to be angry that he will be replaced. Have we gotten so polarized as a nation that we do not see members of the opposite party as human any more? Has it gotten to the point where a man dies of cancer and your first reaction is to ponder the political ramification of it? Calm the fuck down, it barely concerns you, asswipes!
moment of silence everyone!
.....so should we leave the country now?

Within these Conservative revolutionaries, there is a degrees of what I would call -- and this is my biased and unfair opinion -- fanaticism.
I was originally under the impression that Clarence Thomas was going to be chief, but I'm not so sure now.

yes. he's an old man who stood, in a position of power, for things that i find offensive, abhorrent and discriminatory. but he lived a full life of it, and godspeed to him, but it's not like he was 22 and gunned down in, oh, say, iraq. it is possible to be more conservative. watch roberts closely. and don't take advantage of your abortion rights. your bodies may belong to the courts soon. you know, as they say, activist judges.

sweet, i can still get an abortion in australia? i'm totally there.
Have we gotten so polarized as a nation that we do not see members of the opposite party as human any more?yes.
The old one was a far right conservative, the new one is probably going to be a far right conservative. Furthermore, very little politics actually concerns your average American.
I can't help but think, "How long before Scalia becomes Chief Justice?" And what can an american do it about it -- nothing.
Whether or not we can do anything about it doesn't mean we shouldn't be concerned. Hopefully, if enough people start becoming away of the situation they can band together to do something about it--starting with the next election, making sure that everyone connected with Bush's regime is voted out of office. Sure, that won't change who Bush appoints now, but it will hopefully affect who's in office for the next go-round, you know?

My sister saw a man in the parking lot of a grocery store today ripping a Bush sticker off of his car. He'd scrape a little with a razor blade and then rip and scrape more and then rip, etc..
Jeebus, you rock me.
There is hope, but not for us.
yes.
that's fucking retarded, it concerns all of us--american and otherwise.
.
Who is appointed to the supreme court doen't affect "otherwise" Where do you get that? That's domestic shit like can you lose your home because Walmart wants to use that land, right to abortion etc.

I thought the last paragraph was funny:
Bush, grappling with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, wasted little time in coming up with a replacement for Rehnquist. He had taken weeks to settle on Roberts once O'Connor announced her retirement in June.
A little priority-jabbing, maybe?

hmm, george bush is in office because there was a 5-4 (on pary lines) split in the court saying no more recounts; george bush is elected president; a couple years later he bombs the fuck out of a couple countries, pisses off the rest of the world and turns america into a christian state. you're right, i don't see how that can effect anyone outside of america.

John Roberts is a very dangerous individual, now about to be in a very powerful position. Roberts' coming-position now in the Federal Government is terribly, terribly disconcerting.
Furthermore, very little politics actually concerns your average American.
holy shit.
holy shit.
How many people can name even three justices on the court?
how many people can name their senators? let alone their congressmen?
Frist was assisting patients at the field hospital in NO and on CNN the reporter interveiwing him made a comment about how the patients sure must be surprised to see him. and I thought to myself these people aren't going to recognize the senate majority leader, they just think he's another Dr.
Most Americans don't care about what happens in politics and don't follow what's going on. What we need is for people to wake up and do something.

I wish the New York Times would take an extra second to copy edit their updates:
The death President Bush his second court opening within pour months and sets up what's expected to be an even more bruising Senate confirmation battle than that of John Roberts.
