Gay Marriage
Ok guys, sorry this is kinda' late, I'm new, and you may have already discuessed this (but I'm too lazy to see if you already have, sorry), but here it goes anyway:
How do you feel about gay marriage?
Well I'll leave you for now, b/c I already know how I feel, so I'll let you guys (and gals) go at it...that is of course if you care....

Indeed. consider it moved

Welcome to the politics and current affairs section, this is where those GD people rarely go. Because it actually takes a brain to post here. (I'm still trying to get a war going with the GD folk, but I like I said they rarely come here.)
Soon you will be replyed to by Trdydwyre our PCA Mod. He is square and works at a Library. He is also doesn't vote for President because he doesn't like the electoral college but refuses to vote for a third party like Ralph Nader because they don't have a R or D next to their name.
You can easily access prior discussions about Gay Marriage by using the search feature and typing in gay marriage. It's really easy.
"I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, whose purposes are modeled after our own -- a God, in short, who is but a reflection of human frailty. Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotisms." Albert Einstein
i have troubles with the forum searches, so i pulled up a few threads concerning the issue for you Mr. Pink. we'll start with the most direct one.
Civil Rights vs. Gay Marriage Rights This one starts off comparing civil and gay marriage rights, but ends up talking about gay marriage in general.
The Last Civil Rights War Has some pretty good points, and some interesting news.
terror alert code purple Again, some more good points in this thread.
your stance on: This one asks for opinions on several different issues, one being gay marriage.
and thanks for the intro, er, i think thanks at least (gotta keep ribbin' me on that presidential issue eh? heh), doc.
I have talked to homosexuals about this thing-a few of them said it takes all the fun out of being gay!
Also, what do you do in a gay divorce situation-who gets all the money?

in a divorce situation, the money would be split, as it is in a hetero-marriage, it has nothing to do with 'this sex gets this amount, and that sex gets that amount' even in a hetero-marriage.
and i'm sorry, but i have a hard time believing that some would say that it "takes the fun out of being gay". that just makes no sense.

Not everyone dates, some people are sexual deviants, theres just more opportunity within the gay community with lack of marriage. Thats all.

more opportunity how?
We have gay marriage here in the Netherlands. Polls indicated that it would already have been possible in the 1980's, but it didn't happen 'til... three years ago, I think. I'm a hopeless romantic, so if I ever meet the right girl, I'm hoping to have a traditional wedding with big lacy dresses and lots of roses, and so on, and so forth.
And no, I can't seem to think of a single reason why consenting adults shouldn't be able to get married. Those who quote Leviticus should try reading the rest of his laws-- and those who quote the Sodom part seem to have magically skipped the part where Lot gets dateraped by his daughters. Don't base laws (or anything else, for that matter) on the Bible.

But now for my opnion (and I leave you forewarned I've already had this dicussion with many of my peers, so I've already got pleanty of material to use, and well I guess I'll just give you my stance, and if anyone actually cares about argueing we can actually start it up, cuz it does get to be fun, but I'm lazy, and tired, so here it comes):
I believe that the Gays should be allowed to marry the person that they love. And yes I am a straight guy.

Marriage is an obsolete, outdated, irrelevant institution. If gays are lemming enough to want to be a part of it then it's their funeral. The fact that an attempt to establish EQUAL rights in America in 2004 is so controversial says a lot about what this country is really about.
Fix your fucking sig, already.

marriage is a financial institution, above all things, and is essentially a legal contract that if broken or properly adhered to, serves to help decide material posession between the two individuals who enter in this contract. marriage is no longer just a religious rite, but more a matter of state.
so yes, i don't see how the genders of the two individuals matter as qualifications of their ability to enter in this contract.

I concur on all counts. It's ridiculous this is such an issue and if gay couples want to get hitched, for fuck's sake, let them...and you know their weddings would be fabulous.

Well, Bush's constitutional amendment that would effectively ban gay marriage was shot down in the Senate, barely. Out of the 98 votes cast (Kerry and Edwards were the only 2 that did not show for the vote), 48 were for the ban, and 50 were against. In the Senate there needs to be a two-thirds majority for it to have passed, so the amendment was only 12 votes shy of getting passed.
Bush was reported to be "disappointed" by the vote. Opponents of the amendment feel it's being used as a political tool. Kerry and Edwards are on record as being against this amendment, and Kerry made a statement saying "the Senate floor should only be used for the common good, not issues designed to divide us for political purposes." Edwards made his statement saying "the president and the vice president tried to use our Constitution and the amendment of that Constitution as a political tool, and the United States Senate, they said, 'No. We will not accept it.'"
One of Bush's campaign aides stated "It takes a special kind of senator to attack others over a vote that they don't show up for."
I think this is horrid. What is so threatening to a political person about gay marriage? This is a slap in the face to american politics, there is little to no political reason that gay marriage should be constitutionally banned! these senators, the majority of republicans are not voting based on rational thought, but on their own personal biases. If you support gay marriage, or even if you don't give a rat's ass if gays marry, write your representative, especially if they are one of the ones in the list in my following post. This amendment is based on traditions that didn't even exist in marriage come 100 years ago. This whole this is plain old disgusting.

I'm serious about this, I do not want to live in a country that tries to dictate to the people it's supposedly representing what sexual orientation they may marry into.
Santorum, Rick - (R - PA)
Quel surprise.
i'm not surprised by this:
Voinovich, George - (R - OH)
I forget what rights organization has been running tv spots all week using video clips of dick and lynne cheney speaking out that the constitution is not the place to define marriage. it's a state decision, and at the end they had up "write your senators" and had DeWine's and Voinovich's names plastered up there.
that's what we get for being represented by Republicans i guess though...
Rick Santorum - My Hero (If I was a crazy bigot who thought god gave a shit about American Politics)
Damn Tuffy, I thought it was bad having An Idiot Governator and the head of the arms services commitee as my local congressman (Duncan Hunter). But everyone in PA takes the cake with the disgrace of a Mr. Santorum.

now wait, how many of you out there dont give a shit when it comes to it, and get upset, but dont do nothing about it when people start to ban it, cuz...like i said, you dont really care what way it goes, and its not harming anyone?
also i would like to know, how many are there out there totally capable of living without a spouse? or a mate or whatever, one single human, dependent on themself...
i mean, friends are there, but you dont really need them either...
iunno i guess im saying...thats me

i think its none of my business who or how many people you marry, and it shouldn't be the government's business, either.
This is by far the best quote I've ever read of yours, and I'd like your permission to scribble this down and possibly throw it in people's faces, if'n the proper time ever comes. I'd attribute it to you, of course ('who said that?' 'oh, some guy on some website')
1) This country has more to worry about then gay marriage
2) It's a choice between 2 people and not the government
3) the whole argument makes me hate my country a bit more
4) I see no reason to prevent it. Marriage is to make a relationship final and ever-lasting. Do only straight people want that? No. Every one deserves to have that no matter their sexual preference.

if you guys didn't see John Stewart's take on gay marriage last night on the Daily Show, you missed out. I don't remember the last time I laughed harder.
He had this quote from some guy in texas who said something to the extend of 'if we start letting gays marry, what next? people marrying box turtles?' and then he went on to further embarrass himself.
Then Stewart had this graph with those people-figures from street signs, you know, people walking across the street and such, and basically the graph said:
man + woman > man > man + turtle > man + man. when it showed the picture of the man fucking a turtle, i thought i was gonna rupture something, or shit myself, or both.
if anyone can find a link to what it is i'm talking about, i'll give you a gold star.
ok im going to be egged for this but it has to be said:
america was founded on a christian belief system. which in turn means christian marriages, no? now im aware there are other religions. and all but bare with me on this theres a "seperation of church and state" thing. which means the state has no say in whom u marry and dont. so the idea of states BANNING gay marriege is rediculus. getting married by a state official, which is what gays are doing, no? also stupid. i cant think of a religion that condones gay marriages. and i dont know any gay people who wanna BE married. the whole thing is dumb
www.triplebeard.com
http://darkroomreview.blogspot.com
“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
no, the whole thing isn't dumb. you've never met gay people who want to be married? i live near palm springs, which is chalkful of homos who wanna be legal.
so far, i've heard only three arguements against gay marriage. they are:
1: it's immoral.
B- it's breaking tradion
3: it's a tax-problem we don't want to deal with.
Here's why these arguements are fucking stoopid:
A: moral's are codes to live by that were introduced through religion. Therefore, we're saying religions state that gays and gay marriages are immoral. Where's the seperation of church and state there? Besides, it's the government's responsibility to protect its citizens, not to dictate their lives.
2- Racism is/was(?) a tradition, and that doesn't make it right. Columbus day is a tradition, but that doesn't mean that Columbus was a good guy. Christmas is a traditon, but that doesn't mean that spending tons of money on people who you otherwise don't care about because if you don't buy them a gift they won't buy you one is a tradition, but again, it doesn't make it right.
C: Using tax-issues as an arguement to not allow people to marry is simply ridiculous. It's a last-ditch desperate attempt to shift the argument off the shoulder's of anti-gay christians and onto tax payers.
no, the whole thing isn't dumb. you've never met gay people who want to be married? i live near palm springs, which is chalkful of homos who wanna be legal.
so far, i've heard only three arguements against gay marriage.

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
but it is a state issue.
this whole issue bothers me...
while i was in montana recently, trying to ship some stuff home, they had this petition on the counter regarding this subject....i remember the lady getting rather pissy with me cause i wouldn't sign it....i didnt get into with her, but it her attitude about it just pissed me off.....
people should be able to marry who they want....
everyone is entitaled to their own oppinion....blah blah blah...but i know some gay marriages that have lasted longer than marriages between a man and a woman....and if two people are in love and want to make it legal, i say fucking go for it....

wait, was the petition for banning gay marriages?
Ha, that amendment got passed in Nebraska years ago. Basically in this state, not only will they not recognize gay marriages, but they made a law that said they would never ever recognize them ever.
There is hope, but not for us.
Your great state of nebraska still has to recongnize other citzens rights from other states. Ex. If you married in Mass.. Nebraska has to recognize your marriage as legal. Thats why they want this constutional amendment.
I still don't know how you can be against gay marriage and not be a bigot. To me it is blatant discrimination against homosexuals just like the separate but equal situations before.
You fail to understand the way many people see homosexuality, especially religious people: they see it as a choice, unlike being born a certain race or sex, and therefore it's a sin. Essentially the idea that being gay can be undone. Love the sinner, hate the sin. Therefore, it's perfectly reasonable for a lot of people to not want gay marriage but not be bigots. To them, allowing homosexual marriages would be a terrible wrong.
There is hope, but not for us.
No i understand that, but homosexuality is not a choice. It's a natural occurance in most reproductive species. So maybe god had something to do with it. Or I guess blaming the devil could explain it, but why would the devil make penguins gay?
That is the title of my new album - Why would the devil make pengiuns gay?

I saw that Daily Show segment this morning and I almost died.
That show is easily the funniest show on television.
i respect your honesty, but i detest what you're being honest about.

They have a sort of gay marriage system in France, Le Pacque? Maybe Franc could explain it...
This is by far the best quote I've ever read of yours, and I'd like your permission to scribble this down and possibly throw it in people's faces, if'n the proper time ever comes. I'd attribute it to you, of course ('who said that?' 'oh, some guy on some website')
Let me be the first to say "Welcome to the cult".
I'm not trying to piss on your picnic, but I feel this topic would be better suited in the Politics & Current Affairs forum.
