i don't really know enough about minutiae of the case to pinpoint a specific cabinet member, which is partially why i'm asking. one article i read today said a j-school prof and his class spent 4 years on this, and decided on white house deputy counsel fred fielding, but fielding denies it. there's obviously the "who's sick on capitol hill" survey you could take, but that seems like such an obvious thing to uncover if it were that easy.

I'm in the middle of reading "All the President's Men" and I'm hoping to have an educated guess by the end of it. It's a pretty tedious book so far. It would help if they would just reveal who Deep Throat is on the last page or something.

If I remember correctly, the film version doesn't reveal who it is. It's always gonna be a let down, just let it stay a mystery.

He was the Number 2 man in the FBI at the time.

oh, yeah! this is great. i'm DYING for a more substantive woodstein statement. the deal is, secret until he dies or admits himself. but they rarely rule people out. imagine if there's no statement... who knows - could be a ruse. what a last stand for a 91-year-old guy. or maybe, in the absence of the secret, i'm just starving for conspiracy theories now.
