A look inside a Christian conference that preaches homosexuality is a mental condition, which may be treated.

this has long been a conceit by many fundamentalist christian groups, it's too bad it doesn't look like it's going to change any time soon
how do they back up their argument?, that it is a disease?
The basic argument lies in the idea that the Bible is very clear on not condoning homosexuality. There are verses in the laws of the first five books, and in the epistles of the New Testament, that say man shall not lie with another man as he would a woman, etc. Since Christians believe the main object of sex is to produce children, and homosexuals cannot biologically produce children, it just doesn't fly.

What would be their motivation, though? I've had many people tell me that they think homosexuals are "faking it" or "kidding themselves"; the idea that homosexuality is becoming such a trend with TV shows, fashion, etc., that people will become gay just to be more societally accepted.

Personally, it's been a long hard road for me to decide that this is mostly bullshit. The Bible doesn't mention things like Down's Syndrome or identical twins, which are also genetic variances (as some people suppose homosexuality is) but we still have these, right? I think it's just something that the people who penned the Bible didn't take into account. Also, most of the Mosaic laws at the time are surmised to not be the whim of some jealous God, but to protect the people from health risks and ensure them offspring. A lot of the animals that were considered "unclean" by Judaic law were found in later years to carry diseases. Jews weren't allowed to have tattoos or markings because they could become infected and gross. Likewise, homosexuals don't produce children, like I said above, so they would be a hinderance to the Jewish people having many children and covering the earth with God's chosen people.

So what do I think about all this? As a fairly moderate Christian, I cannot completely welcome homosexuality with open arms, but I don't condemn it to Hell like a lot of other people. You're never going to find me holding a sign that says "GAYS ARE FAGS" or the like.

Way to kill a thread #349: Long Bibically centered pedantic speeches.

They're close to it, if they haven't done it already.

Homosexuality used to be in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and now it's not. The 4th edition is the one that's out now..and it may have been as recent as the 3rd edition that homosexuality was in there, but it might've been the 2nd...I can't remember now.

It's a pretty good argument against the religious side if everyone who knows mental disorders and deals with them everyday says it's not a disorder.

People don't listen to science when it clashes with what their whacko beliefs. Kansas stopped teaching evolution in their schools just a few years ago.
Science won't change things, it will just have to be an agonizingly slow process of more and more people becoming enlightened as the reactionaries die off.

Homosexuality _is_ preventable.
Through abortion.
Let the Fundamentalists ponder that.

Anyway...

I don't have a problem with Christians in general, so much as I do with extremists of all stripe. It's common for people, especially so in the younger or more mentally immature, to lash-out against the things that they've recently rejected, so you do see a lot of anger in people who've begun to notice the inherrent problems in organized religion. Yes, I was like that too, actively striving to destroy the church (even though I had never been particularly religous to begin with.) As time went by, I came to realize that the vast majority of religious people live their lives, leave you alone, and are happier because of their choice of god. I'm cool with that. It's the highly-vocal wingnuts who make everybody else look bad.

That's a lot for me to type this early in the morning. I will be happy if it's even slightly coherent.

I heard a few years back that they did a "scientific experiment" in New Orleans, LA that said basicly they can cure un-gay gay people..... No idea how they did it or why they would do that, but that's what I read.... And you should believe everything you read...

You can program people into anything. Just don't expect much good to come of it...
