The Federal Reserve is a private company that controls our money and interest rates. They create this money out of nothing and charge the US government interest on it. the interest, they also create out of nothing.

Lincoln and Kennedy both wanted to take the printing of US currency away from the money changers and give the power back to the Congres as our constitution says. They were both assasinated.

The Federal Reserve Banking System is NOT part of the Federal government. They control our economy for their profit. They also caused the great depression.

the federal reserve is a private organization, but i hardly see how a group of government appointed federal reserve members woud be any better. i think the fed needs to set rules, but i dont think they need to be a seperate branch of the government.

read milton freedman's free to choose for the cause of the depression (your right, the federal reserve did cause the depression, but mainly because they broke with commonly held economic principles, and also anti semitism played a role.)

i bet nobody reads this, considering how popular this thread is. but i'm too lazy to get a blog, and i like how most people here dont agree with my politics. if i started a blog, i might actualy atract the attention of people who see eye to eye.

Why don't you think ethanol will work as car fuel?

I agree with the nuclear power thing, all the big safety incidents were due to human error, if restrictions are tight enough it should be 100% safe. There's various ways of getting nuclear power but we should be able to continue using it for thousands of years, but we probably won't need it for that long because it's quite likely we'll find effective catalysts for more abundant and cheap energy sources, like hydrogen from water.

couple of reasons. one is that every few years they try to come out with some alternative to gas. they've tried grease, they've tried potatoes, theyve tried all sorts of things, and none of these alternatives have worked (grease was to biggest failure, since it smelled as bad as it sounds). now i'm not saying that ethanol is as bad as unlikely as these were. at least with ethanol theres a lot more of a push to make it work by car manufacturers (albeit one motivated entirely by a combination of bullying and subsidizing by the federal government), but the fact of the matter is that tehre is not enough sugar to satisfy our need for oil, especialy with our tarrifs on imported sugar. its been estimated that some 20% of our current fuel consumption could be replaced by ethanol if we converted all of our corn to automotive consumption. also, in order for ethanol to work, people are going to have to start buying ethanol cars. some people will no doubt, but then again some people buy hybrid cars and some people even bought (buy?) fully electric cars, but these select conscientious consumers are not enough to significantly change industry in the long term.

i'm not saying its imposible. it could very well happen. but i think its more likely that hydrogen will be what replaces gas, not ethanol, and i feel strongly enough about it that i would definately have to dissuade anyone thinking of buying stock in any ethanol play-stocks or bonds (especialy bonds)

actualy, i think it'd be kinda cool to see what stocks cultists have invested in (then again, i'm just about to end AP econ and it kinda made me a nerd about all things econ.)

But corn is a very low yeild crop when it comes to ethanol, there are other forms of getting ethanol that will be much more efficient. What it might well come down to is combined hybrid cars that can run on various different mixtures of fuel- petrol, deisel, ethanol, even vegetable oil.

I think switching to ethanol for a while might be a good move in the long run, the USA and Britain could go the way of Brazil and become entirely independant of the middle east for their fuel. They've got the beginning of a monopoly going over there so they're getting away with things that we probably wouldn't tolerate in, say, european countries.

As for the Keynes thing, do you disagree with Keynesianism? Do you believe in total state control or lassez-faire capitalism?

the middle east doesnt have a monopoly on oil. they have significant power in the market, but we have oil pumps and refineries here in the US. remember how after Katrina, oil prices soared? thats because alot of our oil came from around that area. honestly, i think we need to be drilling more domesticaly, but i guess drilling isnt environmentaly friendly unless it happens in countries where most people dont speak english.

and i'm a Moniterist. which means that i think that there should be a set rate of inflation each year, and no discressionary monitary policy, so that investors can feel safer about investing in the country. the problem with keynseyanism is that due to time lags in policy (both monitary and fiscal), the policies often take effect after the problem fixes itself, and end up doing more harm than good. but this isn't something i foam at the mouth about.

No, I can't say that I do remember that, I probably wasn't effected by it much (or at all). Since I don't live in America, don't drive and didn't pay much attention to the economy back then. I barely pay attention now but I'm starting to get interested in it.

Incidentally I think there should be a thread about Globalisation, I'm interested in hearing various sides of the argument and now seems to be the right time for it what with the immigration and multiculturalism threads, although having said that people may have said all they need to say about it in those thread. What do you think?

I like a good full city roasted Tanzania or Timora. After that, I'd say a Vienna roasted Sumatra is nice.

Favorite drink: Cafe' Vienna. call it a sissy drink if you must, it's good. It's basically a latte' with cinnamon and honey added before you pour the milk and foam. But don't let me insult your intelligence...

my mom use to scout real estate for starbucks. she was in charge of north carolina, florida, and i think somewhere else. aparently it sucked (buisness egos, and she would get sick from all the flying), but the pay was good, so she stuck at it for a couple years.

i think a globalism thread is worth a shot. i mean for crist sakes we already have like 7 davinci code threads, and i am soooooo bored of talking about religeon.

i guess this will be a home for all my political thoughts that arn't quite threadworthy. and for people that want to talk about coffee. thats cool too.

We do this one drink at my shop called a havana punto dulce. It's a cubano macchiatto with a hint of real cocoa powder.

At my shop, for our drip coffee we have a turkish pour-over bar where we brew up cups fresh. It's got such an awsome texture. Think french press, but gritty and more full. We have at least 6 different seasonal single origins. Right now we've got this Papau New Guinea... [i]*awsome*[/i]. New Guinea... haven't had that in a while...

I used to roast, you know. We'd get the gren beans in 50 lb bags and I was the full time coffee roaster. I miss that job, but alas... it didn't pay the bills.
