I saw this when I got home. I'm not sure if this version does it, but at some point, it gets so bad that they blur it. It's disgusting and horrible what people will do to each other. Makes me want to vomit.

Degrees are cool and I commend all who pursue them but someday, all they're going to be good for is wiping you're stinking ass, kind of like money.

That's a pretty big gamble to say a degree will eventually be worthless. What if they do turn out to be worthless but it's not for like 3 or 4 lifetimes from now?

I disagree. This is more an insight into your perception of education and ideas of value, rather than a warning to any stereotypes that may be browsing the forums.

I'm an art major. I didn't come to school to "learn how to be an artist." I came as an apprentice of sorts, learning processes and skills that many people take for granted or consider obsolete. These skills are extremely valuable to me, because they facilitate my drive to create. This sort of value will never depreciate because I'm not concerned about a degree or making a dollar from it.

Everyone's idea of value is different. Though your perspective is just as valid as mine, such predictions regarding the collective conscience are completely negated.

quality is 100% right. All I meant was that if one of the many nuclear bombs on this planet blew off and caused a chain reaction, then most degrees wouldn't really help people survive. Degrees serve a purpose in a civilized society but outside of that, I think hands on experience would be alot more useful.
Like in the video. That poor kid was an honor student but it didn't really help him any. That's all I was trying to say.

Well, I think the big travesty here is that this shit happens everyday and nobody gives a damn unless it happens to an honor student. Would the media have cared so much about this kid if he was failing? How about if it wasn't caught on tape?

I just think it's pathetic how CNN (probably other news stations as well, that's just the one I saw it on) keep harping on this story like it's somehow an isolated incident. It just had all the right components for a story. They're using that kid's death and his family's suffering as a means to sell advertising time/space. This is really what turned me off to journalism, how shamelessly capitalist the media has become. There was a time when broadcasters viewed telling the news as a responsibility, not an easy way to exploit the misfortunes of others.

There are still some decent newspeople such as those on 60 Minutes, but such bastions of dignity are few and far between. We've commoditized news to the point where it's meaningless. I wanted to punch Anderson Cooper in the face when he discussed how "tragic" this story was with his "expert" guests who all agreed that it was horrible and yet never discussed real solutions to prevent these common day occurrences. They just wanted to blather on about the psychology of gang activity and blah blah blah.
