In England you have to be eighteen to get married without your parents permission, in Scotland you only have to be sixteen. You've always been able to get married in Scotland without consent younger than in England so there's this little town in the south of Scotland, not far from the border, called Gretna Green. Its one claim to fame is that young couples would often run there to get married.

I can imagine an abortion clinic in the very South of North Dakota getting very good business (or close to the border in one of the other states that's next to it, how should I know?). I can also imagine lots of teenage girls being admitted to hospital with rusty coat hangers stuck up them, but that's more of a fantasy really.

but everytime i hear some pro choice nut ranting and spitting about illegal abortions in those black market back alleys they always say "rusty coathangers" i also get an image of some Blade Runner type alley with neon lights half lit and smoke and fog all over the place and some chinese guy selling noodles out of a street cart at the entrance to that alley
but thats all stuff i just add around to make my fantasy more descriptive

i think this is a bad idea. if a woman doesn't think she's ready to have a baby, she should have the right to abort it. and if they ban abortion, then there will be more illegal, nonsafe abortions that run the risk of harming the mother. its not like the fetus is alive. during the time at which abortions are performed, the fetus isn't even viable outside of the womb.

i think its a good idea because then more people will move to big cities, rather than shitfuck little states like south dakota, and in theory that would take away some of their power.

and to add, im not at all surprised this came about as quickly as it did. alito's been in his office for what, a week now? gobbless america.

but rape is still the big grey area on the abortion matter for me. incest is fine unless its rape. i mean people are quite welcome to have sex with whoever they like, and if that means a direct family member, then fine. although i find the whole idea really really sick, and the offspring are probably going to be freaks.

i still think women should at least have the choice to have an abortion. if you feel that its against your personal beliefs, then don't have one. i don't think that it is right to eliminate everyone's right to have one just because certain people don't believe in it. if a mother doesn't think that she is ready to take care of her child, forcing her to keep it isn't going to solve anything. there have been studies that show the negative effects of denied abortions on both the mother and the child.

probably a lot of people are going to disagree with me here but i think of abortion like euthanasia. the fetus is incapable of living on its own without some life support just like a person in a vegetative state. when people are in the comatose state we allow the next of kin to decide to pull the plug or not to pull the plug. i think its the same with the fetus. we should allow the next of kin, the parents, decide whether or not they want to keep the child.

yeah, but the difference between "pulling the plug" and abortion is that the person youu "pull the plug" on, says you can- they sign something- a DNR, a living will, or an advanced directive.

Actually infant abandonment is a pretty time-honored (if not currently socially acceptable) way of ridding yourself or a child you can't or don't want to take care of. Putting a baby in a wicker basket and leaving it on the doorstep of some stranger (or some church, or some hospital) isn't a myth.

Those states where you can drop off your unwanted baby at a nearby hospital, no questions asked, are onto something.

And on a totally unrelated note, my cousin's pregnant for the third time. Her past two children were born premature, each fathered by a guy who wasn't a legal US Citizen (not that there's anything wrong with that). She's 28.

Now, her kids (whose legal guardians are all different members of the family) are superawesome adorable, but it's probably better to wait to have children until you're absolutely ready to provide for them, and you're not going to leave your baby in Mexico overnight and have the state take her away.

Her 2nd kid, who was taken away based on how she cared for her first kid, turned out all right, but is totally aware that he's adopted, being half-Filipino, half-Mexican, half-caucasian. Bitter custody battles involving a 4-year-old probably suck. Most 4-year-olds can't sit still on a 15-minute car ride, imagine what court would be like.

I dunno if they bring the child in question into court and all.

That is not the idea, they're doing this because they know it's against the law. They want it to end up in front of the Supreme Court because if it makes it that far the Court will probably support it and overturn Roe v. Wade now that there are 2 more right-wing creeps on the bench. Once that happens at least half the states in the country will outlaw abortion and the whole country will resemble one big trailer park in about 20 years.

abortion is a sticky subject, it's fucked up and ugly no matter how you look at it. I used to wave the same flag as Judas, the whole "oh so it can't breathe on it's own yet so it's ok to kill it because it's inconvenient to have a baby right now". The question really is, at what point do you consider it a real person with the right to live. When it's a fertalized egg? I find this hard to accept, but there are lots of good arguments against abortion, and I see their point. But to outlaw abortion, to me is absolutely ridiculous. If you disagree with abortion, don't have one. Put stickers on your car that say "Pro abortion is anti-life!" Fine. Start threads on the internet against abortion. Fine. But a person having an abortion is making their own moral choice that doesn't affect you, you don't know why that person might need an abortion, and it isn't your right to tell them they can't have one. If you could argue indesputably that a fertalized egg is a person, then you could argue a "person's" right to life liberty pursuit of... But you can't.

Abortion is fine.

Anyone who is against abortion should channel their anti-abortion energies into making the world a better place for mothers.
