Eddy, play nice or at least try to make a point instead of an ad hominem attack.

Also, Giggan: Three hundred years ago, the rights held by the peasantry in connection to their land was taken for granted, yet the currently accepted liberal system of rights was not. The concept of what is a right and what is not changes with time, and is always dependent on what the ruling class can do without fear of revolt. Historically, the ruling class in an area has gotten away with as much as it possibly could, sanctifying its failure in other areas as the result of them respecting the rights of the people. I see no reason why the same wouldn't hold true today.

My concept of rights is not time-dependent, ie, the principles upon which I define rights would have been no different in that time aside from the fact that objectvism and anarcho-capitalism had not yet been conceived. If I went back into time, it isn't like my concept of rights would be altered because people don't understand them. Most people don't understand them now as it is.

Yes, it is. Your concept of rights is based on the society you live in and the values you've learned as a result. Concepts like homesteading and private property (as we understand it) and free speech did not exist, so no, you wouldn't have held them to be rights. Claiming that you would have the same liberal (classical, not center-left) politics back then is absurd.

Correct, I wouldn't have been an anarchist back then like Sartre born in the time of Julius Caesar wouldn't have been an existentialist.

So what was the argument in that post, then?

My point is, if I found myself in the middle ages a la Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness, my line of reasoning would not be altered. The people of the time would just have a harder time understanding it.

Okay. I just don't see how that's relevant.

And then they would kill you.

This is not relevant to the discussion at hand, but it's just not a thread until I make note of at which point Giggan gets eaten.

Political idealists always get eaten; they are the modern-day equivalent of missionaries in Africa.

Missionary: Ye heathens take heed! We all but children of the Lord!
Zulu Chieftan: Nom!

Smile

Wait, then what was the point of pointing out that the concept of rights that I have did not exist back in the day? Marxism wasn't around before Marx, either.

I'm saying that rights are not static, absolute concepts. You said that your concept of rights is not time-dependent. I said that yes, it is, if for no other reason than it's based on historical developments and changes in the way people think about, or even acknowledge the existence of, rights. The concept will be different three hundred years from now, as it was three hundred years ago, which supports my case that what we see as a right is nothing more than what we are allowed to have because the ruling class is not in a position to take it away, not the result of moral abstraction.

While yes, the concepts evolved, that doesn't mean they never per-fect and are totally dynamic.
