We Are Vespertine is now accepting submissions for its Lit Mag (and it pays)

Recently, Michael Sonbert and myself started up a website that's part author page and part literary magazine.
I'm posting to discuss the lit mag a little since I constantly recommend Writers' Workshop to anyone looking to hone their craft, and I've even gone as far as to work one on one with some of you outside of shop. Bottom line, I know this place has good stories. I've read them, reviewed them, and watched them move on to Chuck himself. Some don't quite make the cut but end up in print elsewhere. That's the point of workshopping--to write, rewrite, and publish your work.
So today I wanted to throw out another option to consider for all you aspiring writers. Here's how it breaks down:
First things first: we pay. We don’t pay a lot, but we pay because good writing deserves to be compensated. A lot of sites “pay” in notoriety, but notoriety doesn’t buy a six-pack or take care of the pizza guy, so we pay you enough to at least take care of that. Should your story be chosen for publication, you’ll be cut a check for $20 and placed at the top of our featured section on our site.
This means a couple of things:
-We paid for your story, so we own the first publication rights.
-Once the check has been cut, you can’t withdraw your story.
Easy, right?
Now on to how the submissions work:
-We only publish two stories a month—on the 1st and the 15th of every month to be exact, so whatever you submit had better be good.
-Stories should not be more than 6,000 words, and they should be fiction. Sorry, no poetry. Anything else is game unless we specify otherwise.
-Make sure to include a bio with your submission so we can tell people who you are.
-You can submit one story per month. If you send more than one, we won’t even read it.-If your story is selected, we will contact you. Don’t “check in” or “follow up” with us to see how it’s going. We don’t send rejection notifications, so just assume that if you sent us something in January and you don’t hear from us in February, that you can submit it elsewhere.
-Unfortunately, because we only pay in U.S. dollars, we can only accept submissions from U.S. residents. If you’re from outside the country and just want to get a story published, then submit away. Just know that there won’t be a check coming.
-We reserve the right to make any necessary edits or changes upon publication. Keep in mind, we’re not going to mess with your story, but if there’s a mistake or something that you overlooked, we’re going to fix it before it goes up.
-If you’re selected for publication, we demand you tell everyone you know to come over and read the damn thing.
You can submit by sending your piece to the following email address: submissions@wearevespertine.com
Please have your submissions in either .doc or PDF format attached. Include your full name, address (so we can pay you), phone number, author pic, and your bio included as well.
Thanks, and good luck,
-BT/Sonbert
So there you have it. I hope to see a lot of my fellow workshoppers sending stories our way for what's hopefully the first of many paying publications.
Here's the link to our website: www.wearevespertine.com
We also just set up a Facebook too: https://www.facebook.com/pages/We-Are-Vespertine/200822659946199
Cheers,
-BT
A self-contained novel excerpt would be considered, but a short story stands a better chance since that's what we're actively looking for.
Regarding posting novel excerpts, we've only agreed to do it with a handful of authors who have books contracted and scheduled for release through their presses, and our plan is to post those along with either an interview or some kind of advanced review of the work before its scheduled release.
Excellent. Thanks.
All in all, this is very cool.
Very cool. Thanks for letting us know -do you accept Simultaneous? I know it mentions not to send more than one story per month, but do you accept submissions being considered elsewhere? Or no since it's only a one month wait? (Which is Great, by the way).

You can send in pieces that are being considered elsewhere. We'd prefer you didn't, but hey, we can't control that.
All that we ask is that if a piece that's being considered by us gets picked up elsewhere, email us and let us know so we can take that one out of the pile.
In your subject line you'd put: RETRACTING SUBMISSION
Or something to that effect.
Well as I said, a month is a Great timeframe, so if you prefer people didn't send a simultaneous sub, then I won't. Just checked out the site too, by way. Looks great. Congratulations.

Very cool, man. We'll keep an eye out for your sub.
And thanks for the kind words...still need to fine-tune some stuff, but it's coming along.
Hey BT.
The site looks very good so far, clean and easy on the eye.
I would be very happy to send you a story at some point i the future. For sure man, this is looking like it will be a sweet place to get a credit. Just as soon as I'm happy that one of my stories are good enough to stand a chance. (Though being in the UK I wouldn't get the $$'s I suppose, but I really wouldn't care about the cheque)
Best of luck with getting this going.

Latest update - What The Eyes Behold by Mike Frounfelter.
Hey Brandon, good work on the website, looks very nice. What kind of stuff are you looking for, submissions wise? Horror, satire, transgressive, chick-lit - or is it just a case of "if its good, that's all that matters"?
As of now, we're only being as specific as not wanting poetry or non-fiction.
Our two main pools of talent right now that we're drawing from are The Cult and The Velvet, so we feel pretty good about letting you guys send whatever you want.
When the word spreads about us to writers outside of those circles--that's when we might have to get a little bit more specific about what we're looking for in our guidelines.
Until then--anything goes.
by the way, had to look up vespertine, very cool, wish i'd discovered that word, shit, might have been the title for book #3! site looks great

We're one week away from posting our first story up on the site (the 15th). This is just a friendly reminder to keep those stories rolling in. Link to the submission guidelines is in the first post of course.
In other news, Michael Sonbert just got his first official review for We Are Oblivion over at Outsider Writers Collective, courtesy of our very own Matt "kangaroo eater" O'Donnell. Check it out by following the link: http://www.outsiderwriters.org/archives/7425#more-7425
Finally, Mr. Paul Tremblay, author of In the Mean Time will be contributing one of his stories to the site. A full review of his collection will be posted in the next week or so.
Cheers,
-BT
Our first story is by fellow Cultie, Mr. Nathan Pettigrew, which you can check out here: http://wearevespertine.com/2011/04/15/life-and-death-and-laughing-and-st...
Authors are paid $20 upon publication so keep those submissions rolling in at submissions@wearevespertine.com
Thanks, Brandon! Very cool. And coincidence -I was actually just posting this news in the Acceptances thread -also spoke to the success of the intensives here, where I learned a great deal.
Visit me at Solarcide—A Writer’s Hideout: http://solarcide.com/fiction/nathan-pettigrew/
Yeah, damn those intensives are a great time. I wish I could be part of every damn one of them. The Art of the Short Story one, the one that your story came from Nathan, is something I really wish I could do. I have the cash for the recent one, too, but, alas, not the time. I'm away on holidays, internet-less, for a week, up at Byron Bay for the annual Bluesfest. So, kind of bummed. Especially because Mark mentioned the possibility of it being the last class. Not happy.
Congrats, Nathan! It's an awesome story, and you deserve all the recognition in the world for the hard work you've been putting in lately.
-Chris Lewis Carter-
Thanks, Chris! That means a lot to me coming from you -you've been there since the beginning -you keep me on my toes and your stories motivate me to give it my all.
Visit me at Solarcide—A Writer’s Hideout: http://solarcide.com/fiction/nathan-pettigrew/
Yeah but you're doing just fine on your own. And speaking of that, you guys should submit to Vespertine!

I've been thinking about it. I'm not sure if I have anything for them yet. They're not into simultaneous subs. And, I've got a few stories I'm shopping at the moment, out at a few places. We'll see. If something comes up and I think it fits their bill, I'll definitely send it through. Hard to know what they're really after though.
We've changed our official ruling on that. We figure since we're not being very specific about what we want that people should be able to send in more than just the one, so go nuts.
Ah, nice. But, do you mean Simultaneous subs or Multiple subs or both?
So, I can send you two pieces that are also out to other markets?
Not for me there ain't.
I'm thinking of submitting one of my pieces from the Art of the Short Story intensive I took with Nathan and Chris. I've been all downtrodden about this submission stuff lately, though. Haven't had any luck. I know my writing is good, but finding the homes for it is probably the most difficult thing I've ever had to do.
I'll probably do it tonight, though, after I do my housewife duties and bake some pineapple cupcakes. My household is pretty low on comfort food. I'd send you a congratulatory one, Nathan, but I don't think it'll survive the trip.
good job Nathan. Just read the story. It's nice to see your writing coming along, developing. You certainly have a niche. Maybe you'll see your stuff in some Best of Erotic Fiction collection.
Anyways...virtual pat on the back for you.
I moved through the days like a severed head that finishes a sentence --- Amy Hempel
Thanks for the words, Tony. Hope you're not disappointed in my new story coming out this summer -No Sex!
And Rebecca, I'll assume those pineapple cupcakes are delicious and thank you anyway -it's the thought that counts!
But yeah I agree -you should Definitely submit to Vespertine. Why not?

You start this AFTER I publish with you? Sheesh.
I know. I know.
Spur of the moment. What can I say.
QUESTION: May I submit through interpretive dance?
You look like the type of guy / gal, who would like:
Can I submit a scene from a feature length screenplay?
Our newest story for June 1st is up, and it's by fellow Cultie, Martin Garrity--or as we know him, wickedvoodoo. He'll be getting a signed copy of We Are Oblivion.
Check out the piece here: http://wearevespertine.com/2011/06/01/cloud-by-martin-garrity/#more-954

Next story goes up on June 15th and gets $20 for publication.
Seriously, I'm still smiling about this.
Many cheers to the people who reviewed this in the workshop, IMO that was a great example of what workshopping is supposed to be about.
Special thanks to Doc O' Donnell for his writing prompt and his top notch review.

Our newest piece is by fellow Cultie, Greg Eidson. I tell ya, we get some pretty decent submissions, but they never seem to be as good as the ones we get from workshoppers. Come on over and check it out: http://wearevespertine.com/2011/06/15/babies-by-greg-eidson/#more-980
Make sure to keep those submissions rolling in.

Coming soon: 5 Q's with Lidia Yuknavitch, author of The Chronology of Water.

Vespertine is doing some great stuff. Stop by.

Read it, Richard -great stuff as always. Hey was there a shorter version of this somewhere?
"At the window, the world is blanketed in a white blindness. I see her boot prints in the snow below me, the world outside gone dead."
I thought I recognized that -I try to read all of your stuff (geek "fan," I know) -but that image, those lines are killer and stuck out. Maybe I read in a workshop?
But yeah I like Descent -and can't wait to read Disintigration -that's my most anticipated novel.
Visit me at Solarcide—A Writer’s Hideout: http://solarcide.com/fiction/nathan-pettigrew/
i think this did start as a 25-word story for a contest, did you enter that? - thanks for the kind words, shopping Disintegration now, trying to land an agent or a press

(1)Are novel excerpts accepted? (2) or should submissions be short fiction only? (3) Would you be willing to serialize novels?
