Great idea, corellion. I'll do what I can... though I'm super busy with the Drake intensive, of course.

I did just now offer a quick review on Casey Frechette's novel prologue, from the top of the stack.
Check out the beginning of his story there--it's a real grabber.

I've just done him a review too. I tried as much as I could to pick up on anything that might do with being improved, but overall, well, I want to read that novel. I'm going to get reviewing a bit more then spend the rest of the night polishing off a piece I want to upload, chapter one from my little novella. It's great that you're interested though. Maybe when you're done there you can give a shout-out to the other's doing it to take a visit here? After a few more reviews, but before getting working, I'll send a PM to a few of the other guys that took part in the intensive and direct them here, incase they're interested in more peer-review work. Also, anyone else who's interested in getting some more reviews, come talk here and post up a story and get reviewing other people who've posted here, (and haven't) and let's all get working.

VP, do you think some sort of roster would be worth it, in the first post. Maybe a list of "members" and their current stories? Maybe you could tinker with that post and sort of have it by itself be susceptible to editting indefinately, as opposed to the twenty-four hours editting of usual posts? If not then we'll all just have to try and catch up to the last couple of people's posts.

I can't change editing privileges for a single post. But I can always update it myself if people want to check in here and get some kind of list going. Of course, maybe that's not necessary. It might be nice if people just dive in and get busy on some unrated submissions, even when the authors haven't checked in here. But make a little noise on this thread about anything you want to bring some attention to.

I would really like to see this effort take off. It is the whole reason I joined up here. I have too much going on this week what with the Drake intensive and some unpleasantries in my real life, but count me in. I'll jump on board as soon as I can.

count me in, especially after the MDI is over

my biggest issue with the site is via the mac i just have not been able to upload anything - that needs to be fixed

MARK: any way we can upload .docs or .pdfs instead of just .rtf and .txt?

but, if we're going to start a thread instead or something i'd be down with that, so count me in for this however it goes down

casey's piece sounds cool too, i've been meaning to do more reviewing, but with the CCI and MDI that's 12+ weeks of really being strapped already, not to mention a novel workshop i'm in outside this site

Richard, there's no way to upload .docs or .pdfs into the workshop at this time; however, Clay recently fixed a bug with the uploads. It's entirely possible that the submissions problem you were running into some months ago had nothing at all to do with your being on a Mac. (If you recall, I even logged in through your account and tried to upload something for you, and I couldn't get it to work. And I'm on a PC.) I think you'll find that if you upload in .txt or .rtf that it will work for you now. Please do give it a try as soon as you get a chance.

Great to see a good bit of interest in this. Though you know, I think if a couple of the big posters around General Discussion decided to surrender and come help it would really do a lot for others to join in. Also, about the uploading documents. I've found that whole ordeal to be painful and I know I go on about changes all the time, but is there any way you guys might think of some sort of similar easy-forum upload critique sort of thing going on there?

In fact, the two workshops I've been in that I've learned most from, the Clevenger one, and the brief Short-Story Anthology-Novel one I did with Jase, have both used the same system, (Though, no offense to Jase, the Clevenger one helped me the most. I'm still reeling from some of those savage right-hooks he threw at us in that last essay... It's reformed my idea about how to write. The whole intensive has. It was amazing fun too, the whole thing. I'll definately look back on those two months fondly when I'm on my deathbed.) I think that the inline critique is invaluable. And I'd half post a poll about it if this hadn't been brought up already and you hadn't given a perfectly good answer as to why it isn't there. But I'll say again that I'd really like it. It makes reviewing so much easier. I'll stop going on though. I'm in a mood to read, and it's breakfast time. Good morning to you all. Hope you're well.

I agree with you that formatting a plain .txt document with mark-up tags can be quite tedious. It's tough to get it right and even tougher to present it in anything like a standard manuscript format. That's why I asked one of our coders to add an .rtf upload option, which we've had now for a year or better. Have you tried it?

If you've written something in Word and it's saved as a .doc, you can save it over again as an .rtf in a matter of seconds. The letters just stand for Rich Text Format and it's a universal format for rich text editors; that is, for any word processor out there. It will maintain your basic style attributes, like bold, italics, underline, double spacing, etc. And you should be able to save to RTF, no matter your platform or word processor of choice.

When you upload an RTF, it will be a linked download document just like the scripts in script shop. This lets you present your work in a standard manuscript format, just as you'd send it to any editor. And it lets you dispense with those pesky tags and the minor formatting crises that always seem to creep in with the .txt uploads.

I've found copying and pasting a word document into notepad allows for an easy transition VP. Anyway, another story from me uploaded. I'm surprised at how much of the story I cut from this. A whole load of exposition and needless dialogue. I don't know if it's coming across too spare now though or what.

A plea, to all who read this and go and review, please have something of your own up soon too for me to review back to so I can review your piece and maybe you should go and review Casey's too and I'm sure he'll do yours unless he's busy making women wobble their bodies at drunkards and we can all review each other and be a happy little cult.

Excellent. Is your upload something from your memoir or a short story?
If it's the latter, what's the current state with your memoir? Is the angel idea still in? I liked that.

hey cor,

we still up for this? i know some people in the Drake intensive were interested, and some from the CCI as well - we're wrapping up real soon

i'm still down for it

what kind of format were you thinking? i thought maybe we get a list of people, post it up (say 10-15) and then each person has 48 hours to post and 48 hours for everyone to review - if you don't review in that time you get kicked to the bottom of the list - after the 30 days are up, we open it back up for other people

you'd only get one review a month, but hey, it's something

thoughts?

I was thinking more along the lines of an informal "club", people just posting in here when they've got a story up for us to give a read through. No dead-on roster, just something that we can all work with. A place to ask for story reviews, I mean, if there are six people involved, say all six stories are posted, after everyone's finished reviewing everyone else for one stage, we can begin the next stage because everyone will have completed the neccessary reviews. Also with this, we can guarentee any who join, and of course it's open to all, that they'll get the neccessary five reviews for stars, and not too much above that. Speaking of which, I need to go and get reviewing those who did so to my story.

But if it's sort of wanted that we make it maybe more so of a club with it's own forum and the sort, then I'm down for it. I don't want to coordinate this though, so it's up to whoever wants to be involved.

hmmmm....not sure - my concern with informal is that people post, and nobody reviews - i'd just like to continue posting up and giving/getting reviews from a caliber of person like we've had in the last two intensives

not sure what the best way is to handle that

i understand if you don't want to be in charge, what with the anthology - what with me being married with children i hate to commit

thoughts?

Was it the, erm, physically challenged killer? The Kill Bill-esque first chapter? I liked that, is it the same one I PM'd you about or have you got the next part up?

I think I'll try my hand at writing something pulpy actually. Seems like fun.

I got the PM, I just don't remember if you did an actual review. I'm just sayin', cause, you know, that'll get you closer to being able to post a new piece...

i'm still interested cor, if you want to run this thing - i think with a finite membership, we could all post up every week a short story, and critique like in the intensives

Just a question:

Can you do reviews if you aren't a premium member? I don't have anything worth submitting myself, but would like to do some reviews if that would help.

We could do, the thing is, I don't like things like finite membership, it'd end up being elitist and contrary to the whole purpose of the workshop, it would be like a parellel to the workshop and that seems a little odd, but I think keeping it open, infinite, with maybe a core of members could work well - mostly I'll review, or at least read through, anything a familiar name posts. A lot of the time I don't know what to say about a piece, it's just not something I'd normally read and I couldn't offer anything substantial about it, other times I just couldn't critically look at it properly. But yeah, I think with a sort of trading-post that this club could provide everyone would receive a proper number of reviews, so some stories don't end up with 14 and others never getting beyond two.

Never mind, it was just a thought. I'll probably up-grade my membership some time soon, and when I do I'll hit you with some reviews.

I'm pretty sure you can't, though that's awesome that you want to review. If you know someone in particular you could always ask them to email you the story and then you can send them back a review? Just a thought.

Also now that my internet is back This sounds like a fun idea. I'm all for it. I don't know if the 48 hour thing would work as well though because I know, at least as far as myself is concerned, that there are times that I'm busy for two days at a time but then have long periods of time free. I'd hate to miss someone if i could help them.

I guess I'd rather have a core of 10-12 committed people then 25 people who hardly show up, and then I post stuff that never gets read. BUT, I will say, that if we did have the caliber of people that are in the intensives, I'd be down. There have been several people that have always been good about reading and posting up helpful comments: Burner, KC, Grover, Kabol, BostonNoir, Evilash, Thirstygerbil, Kara, Katea, Monkey, Tomstrong, you, etc., etc. If we got even 50% of previous intensive goers, (especially repeaters) I think we'd have a good, solid base of serious writers who also have a lot to offer.

Whatever you think bro.

Righty, are people still down for this? I think if we use this thread as a sort of alert place, for new stories posted in the workshop it could work well. I'm going to spend a while today hitting up stories that don't have many reviews yet. If you guys do the same it'd be great. Let's kick some new life into this for the new year, yeah?

That said, I do realise it's Christmas Day and all of you enjoy family and stuff.
