Well. I'm here.
Depends on what "philosophizing" means. If you mean sitting around and thinking about life, then yes, anyone can philosophize. But if you want to read and comment critically on the works and thoughts of other philosophers, add your own thoughts, write your own treatises, familiarize yourself with obscure concepts like negation, the Absolute, alienation, relation, transcendence, categorization, intellectualism, anti-essentialism, and many others, then you're better off spending as much time as possible in the classroom. It will make your life far easier and more enjoyable.
Don't bother calling yourself a philosopher. The term has many connotations, some of them negative. Students of philosophy don't necessarily call themselves philosophers and will ridicule you for it, and most other people will just think you're pretentious. Stick to being a "thinker", it's far less controversial and probably more accurate.
"A thinker." I like it. I'll stick with that then.

Don't be silly, things like negation and alienation are pretentious terms for thoughts everyone experiences and understands, only the sheer weight of multi-syllabic sentences and droning paragraphs in every so called philosophical book, save a few pretty prose-filled ones, kills the human thought process, so we're convinced we don't actually understand them. Everyone has a right to call themself a philosopher, so crow, call yourself whatever you like, and if people look down on you because of it, they're being pooey. Sure enough it takes a good deal of eloquency to express all of your thoughts fluently and precisely, but let's not pretend that eloquence is any substitute for the thoughts themselves.
Ethics, metaphysics, epistemology and logic are all perfectly reasonable realms of thought for anyone, anywhere. Whether you're lecturing some eager students in some university with an astounding reputation or you're sitting around waiting for puberty to hit and wondering when your fifteen year old elder sister will finish school so she can let you in, because she's got the only key to the house.
Most people feel any kind of sharing of knowledge is belittlement, because they're cunts, and they think you're showing off, as opposed to trying to get some conversation going. I'm fed up of semantics, and I wish everything could be a single-syllable word and nice and easy to read and say and hear and type.
Then again, I agree with xec8, if you really want to comment on other philosophers thoughts, you're better off going to school and learning there. I mean, there's no point in reinventing the wheel. And nobody really appreciates things being brought back to basics, we all want detail and nit picking and expansion and curving ideas and blossoming our own theories off of some famous twats branch.
At the end of it all though, you'll just end up staying awake for a few days, drinking too much coffee, have your bowels back up and think, "Fuck this, I'll have a wank." and when you come, you'll realise, The Absolute, God, Infinity, it means fuck all to me, I don't need to understand it, I want to enjoy myself, I'll do that instead. And then you'll be sorted, you'll read nice books, you'll smile more, and you'll stop feeling bad. Who cares about stupid things like shallowness. If buying stuff makes you happy, then you're happy. Who cares how you got there.
P.S. Also I don't like talking about academic stuff, unless I'm drunk. Academic stuff being stuff that's more than, "Eurgh, look at the rash on her chin"

I'm not denying that. However, inaccessible or not, the language of philosophy is rooted in tradition and unlikely to change. Works written in simple language, in “layman” terms, are generally seen as works of popularization, whether unjustly or not. So, if you think philosophical jargon is the prime “killer” of the average person’s thinking process, that only backs up what I said: To be an “academic” philosopher as modern academia implicitly defines it, you’re much better off being in a classroom.

Okay, but the fact that you say this doesn’t change much. The point is that Crow should be aware of the implications of called yourself a philosopher. And there’s no need to call yourself that anyway. That’s like telling your date, completely out of context and unprovoked, that you never lie. It sounds like you’re hiding something, that you’re entertaining some pretense.

Careful with this. While I agree with you – questions of morality, epistemology, etc, are important issues for everyone, whether they realize it or not – expressing yourself that way makes you sound like the guy who’ll spout smug platitudes about how art can be ANYTHING! EVERYONE CAN BE AN ARTIST! DON’T LET THE ELITES TELL YOU WHAT IS ART AND WHAT ISN’T!!!!!!!!! The point is, philosophy is a serious academic discipline. We’re not just talking about a philosophy, like John’s personal philosophy. We’re talking about the discipline of philosophy, to which the academics like to claim full rights. “The rational investigation of questions about existence and knowledge and ethics.” It’s difficult to find someone who really is RATIONAL in their thought process.

Agreed. It's unfortunate that sharing knowledge is often seen as condescending behaviour.

It's like saying time doesn't exist because you can split it into infinitessimal parts. Wow, clever!

I don't believe there's such a thing as art. I think it's a silly term for someone wanting to say, "Look how I did this. Isn't it clever?" But I agree, as far as it's worth, that anything is art. And I do say it smugly, holding my coffee mug like a fine glass and sipping that shit like wine.
I'm not saying it isn't difficult to find rational thought in solitary philosophy. I agree that rationality's important in any avenue of thought, but rationality, method, is key. If that little boy waiting for his balls to drop thinks rationally, then he's every claim to a philosopher's title as any old guy with a beard and thick glasses and a pipe.
Tradition is misandrist propoganda, ignore it. Also I was too lazy to quote parts of your post.
art to me is a dirty word, as in unclean.
do you just tell people you're a paper hanger?
Fine, I'm a philosopher then. I have thought about the consequences of calling myself that, and this forum is the representation of the rest of the world that hears me say that. Half think it's condescending and half thinks it's badass and alright by them.
Like I said before, philosophy is truth. And the truth is, some people will be offended that I could call myself one. I'll always take that into account. Balance is very important to me. Whenever there's a conflict, I resolve it, if I can. Sometimes that means conforming a little. Sometimes it means doing the exact opposite.
Anyways, that's my bit of philosophy for the day, if you can call it that.

Well in my mind I've separated science and philosophy in that way. Philosophy is truth, and science is pure fact. That's been my opinion anyway.
This is simply for clarification on the definition of philosophy. Also, in matters of science, many theories abound so it is not really strictly defined as purely factual.
philosophy
A study that attempts to discover the fundamental principles of the sciences, the arts, and the world that the sciences and arts deal with; the word philosophy is from the Greek for “love of wisdom.” Philosophy has many branches that explore principles of specific areas, such as knowledge (epistemology), reasoning (logic), being in general (metaphysics), beauty (aesthetics), and human conduct (ethics).
Different approaches to philosophy are also called philosophies. (See also epicureanism, existentialism, idealism, materialism, nihilism, pragmatism, stoicism, and utilitarianism.)

Typically, I only join forums in which I am certain I can feel morally and/or intelectually superior to other posters. I figured I'd give this one a try since it seems that most of you wear your moral and/or intelectual superiority like a girl scout badge. Excellent. Yeah, yeah, i'm a newbie. I'd rather be a Newsie. What a shitty movie THAT was. Anyhow, I like Chucks work a great deal. I actually read Survivor before I even heard of Fight Club (I spent a good deal of time living at a hostel run by neo-hippies in southern Georgia, and we didn't really take trips to the movies or book stores all that often.) After Survivor I was hooked. The darn thing made me want to write again. So, I did. And I still do. And I keep reading, reading, reading.
And I didn't drop out of high school. And I am not a philosopher. And I really, really love Ween.
Eh?

Have you read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad? It was the source material for Apocalypse Now. But mostly you should know this. Anyways Joseph Conrad was an amazing writer, and he should be read if you haven't already.

Indeed it is. I should have been a lit major. But it was too damn easy, So became a sociology major and studied anthropology of deviance instead. HA! Yes that does not get you work, but it's interesting
I've always found Heart of Darkness to be a pretty bad work. Definitely one of the weaker things Conrad wrote...
There is hope, but not for us.

Well, I try to avoid that, but I can't avoid pissing some people off with my lofty talk. It does sound kind of pretentious at times and people don't always like that. Most feel like it's a belittlement and an insult. So I keep it to myself mostly.
