greetings...
i'm eda, a late blooming chuck-ite. i didn't discover my obsession until diary was released entirely because i'm an idiot and hate to read things everyone is talking about. i must have had 10 coworkers (i'm a bookseller) tell me how i just hadddddddd to read palahniuk. so i didn't. once i didn't hear his name for 6 months or so i picked up diary and ended up reading the rest of his back catalog in just a few weeks. it was ridiculous and utterly wonderful.
i reside in the virtually rainless southern california (except for yesterday... yippeee!). the only great thing about being here is that all my favorite authors never fail to stop by los angeles.
aside from being a bookseller, i hand-bind books... which is what i truly love to do. i write often also, but entirely manic-depressively (i'll write for weeks and then not at all for months). i'm working on improving that condition. so far unsuccessfully.
my other author favorites: francesca lia block, toni morrison, t.s. elliot, neil gaiman, dave eggers. and i collect lewis carroll like no one's business. i also probably need regular tetnus shots to control my rabid tori amos obsession. but there's only so much you can do, right?
i'm looking forward to the forums and all of you here.
cheers, e.
Whoa, great first post. Welcome! I hope you have a great time. How about a little more personal information, like age, sex, yada yada. Maybe something fun about yourself, although you did a pretty good job up there. Wait for Wickerkat, he'll say something like,
"Welcome to the machine"
OR
"Welcome to the Monkeyhouse"
OR
"Welcome to the Circus."
He's cool though. He's good at welcoming.
Nice name, picture, and thing that's under your name.

i work for an evil book store (see: extremely corporate, huge, we have 500 stores and we're not really sure if we care about books anymore). let's say it starts with a B. oh shit... they both do. well, lets just say i work for borders. BUT I SHOP AT VROMAN'S. it's true. i do so love me some vroman's in pasadena.
as far as lewis carroll goes... let me qualify my earlier statement. i am very poor (remember who i work for? they don't pay very well, even after 6 years). but i nab all the wonderful things i can. i highly recommend Lewis Carroll: Photographer. it's a huge lovely hardbound book full of his collected photography. i have a bachelor's in mathematics which has encouraged me to collect his lesser known works like Pillow Puzzles and such. also...ooooooooo... the ralph steadman illustrated alice is uber marvelous. and films like Dream Child... and... i better stop now.

Drop it with the "age" and "sex' and "personal information". People will post that if they want. It's not super relevant to aimless discussions on an author's message board, you know.
I know that would freak me out if I just posted about my favorite authors like, what, is this a hookup joint?
No offense, I love your enthusiasm, it's just this ain't myspace.

age: gulp. 29
sex: girlie
something fun: i haven't been committed to a psychiatric hospital in 4 years. go me!
and... i really like your shiny tin man.
thanks for the welcomes... both of you

Well, it makes it less confusing later on when people start to get more personal. I mean, I like to know right off the bat what "type" of person someone is. I suppose if someone's not comfortable giving that out right away, fine. I'm one of the younger members, and that's mainly what I'm looking for. To see if the new person is in my age/sex group. Obviously, this person isn't. Tons of people thought I was a girl for a long time, and I'm just trying to figure things out quicker. Sorry.:tapedshut

Heh, thanks.
Maybe I am a little too pushy when it comes to welcome threads.... I'll tone it down a bit. I just like to give people a direction to go.
I'm not trying to hook people up, or mimic myspace. This place is ten hundred times better.

Salve, Latina lingus sorae...!
Quid est?
uh, Illegitamus non Carborundum?
I suck. Four years and that's about it.
...Valve.
And welcome.

ha! i am very impressed. one day out of college and my latin fell to little bits and pieces. mostly i just enjoy being an ass and correcting people's pronunciation of "veni vidi vici."
tell me what this "carborundum" word is. my wheelock's just isn't cutting it.
I thought this was going to be a discussion about Chapstick
So, what is Salve? Hello? I wish I could take Latin. Maybe I will in college.

Welcome to the pet shop!
Nice to see a fellow fan of Francesca Lia Block around.

Carbondum is to grind down.
'Don't let the bastards grind you down' or whatever.
You could've gotten that from The Handmaid' Tale, though.
And i LOVE. telling people they're saying that wrong. That, and Cicero.
Ha, my friend just did a presentation on Cicero. How do you pronounce it? She said "sis-uh-row"

Brentinlouis Wrote: What was that rule about being intentionally annoying?
I like mispronouncing words on purpose just to see if any morons going to correct me
Salve!
Volo verberare servus cum baculum sub arbore.
Two years of Latin, and that's basically all I can say. And I'm pretty sure my endings were mostly wrong.
Reguardless, welcome. I'm about a week old here, and everyone is much more friendly than I suspected.
But I must ask.. did you ever use Ecci Romani? That's the book we use, and it's only the greatest ever. The plot line is incredible...
Vale!

Romans didn't use soft 'c's...so it *should* be Kee-Care-Oh.
But it really doesn't matter. It's like Celtic, y'know? People pronounce it improperly so much that it stopped mattering.

Ha! I'm going to tell her tomorrow. She gave a speech on him, and said it that way through the whole thing.

We used Ecce Romani for Latin. Abite Molesti. That's all I remember at the moment, other bits and pieces come back to me on occasion.
i only made it through a year of latin in college... so the only thing i really saw was my Wheelock's textbook and volumes upon volumes (it seemed at the time) of "how words are thusly declined." i loved it though. wish i could've taken more. but one must graduate someday. hopefully. and now that that was quite a number of years back, i remember hardly anything. sigh.
welcome and have fun!
btw nice avatar, what kind of flower is that?

welcome to the cult, watch out for corellion, i swear that kid has an entire colony of genetically altered critters of a vast variety living in his pubic nether reigons. And he will try and share.Everyone here is really nice, and at times fairly intellegent, other times the forums reek rediculous nonsense especially in parody threads
oh and i am the god of bad grammar.

hey there, welcome. I'm also in L.A. and hell yes, that rain yesterday was a surprise and kind of a nice change of pace. I wanted to call in sick to work just to soak it up.
So what bookseller do you work for? They're really dwindling these days.
I live on the westside and mostly go to that place on Sawtelle below Santa Monica ( I think it may be called BOOKS) or Book Soup in West Hollywood. Mostly I get books online through abe or ebay.
How the HELL can you afford to collect Lewis Carroll? I collect Lois Lenski myself.
Anyway, welcome once again.
