just a bit curious on posting etiquette... is it completely rude to just start posting stuff? or to just log in to the chat section? god, it's sad how completely naive i am!

follow at your own risk but yeah, most newbies who make welcome threads don't last. just jump in and post something interesting.
Hey! Just thought I'd say hello. I'm from Sweden and I've been a fan since around 2004 when my friend gave me Diary (which still is my favourite). At the time I was working on a collection of short stories, a school project. When I started to read Diary I had written about four of the twelve stories, and Chuck is largely responsible for the way my school project turned out. I loved books, but hated about 90 % of the stuff that got published in Sweden at the time (four years later, I'm down to hating about 80 % of it - most of it is still extremely awful, it's all boring crime stories told in third person). Chuck changed the way I thought of storytelling and writing, and my school project sort of reflected this.
Since then, I've read everything he's published. Chuck, but mostly the Cult, also opened a lot of new doors to better, but often less known, writers and books. I'm a fan of Craig Clevenger, Monica Drake, Chelsea Cain, Denis Johnson, Amy Hempel, and it's pretty much all because of Chuck and the Cult. In Sweden, a lot of these books are not available in your regular Barnes & Noble-kind of book store, which also reflects the literary situation in Sweden.
I've been around the Cult a while, since 2004 I think, but I became a member in February and since then I've kept quiet. I thought that maybe it was time to say hello, and for once use my rather shitty English.
Some quick facts; I'm 21, I live in Stockholm, Sweden and I'm a criminology major. I've worked at the National Board of Health and Welfare, as a research assistant on a project about prostitution and human trafficking. Allergic to cats, but love them. Love my girlfriend, afraid of her parents. There.
Heh, really? How come? I mean, it's a nice town, but...? If I had to choose, though, I'd still want to live in Stockholm, because of its size, people and culture. So I wouldn't want to live somewhere else. I moved here after high school, because the only Department of Criminology is in Stockholm, so I was born and raised in a small town on the west coast, maybe that's why I have a little different point of view.
I used to know German pretty good. Nowadays, all I ever use is "Die ganze Hund!" which I believe translates as "The whole dog!".
Hello folx. I'm submitting myself to whatever ritual hazing is the norm. I'm from and live in N.J., I work in avionics. I paint and I write. I can sing, but I don't for crowds anymore. Married with one son. I work out my problems and questions through my writing. It challenges me. The fact that Ima Rand and Palahniuk fan is such a paradox. It's like running the 100m and the marathon at a track meet. I judge women by whether or not they can speak with intellegence and If I think they'll be a fun fluck. Lucky for me, this tends to go hand in hand. Nice to be here.
Even the mightiest oak tree was once a nut that stood his ground.
Hey all
Yes, I'm yet another newbie. Not at all new to Chuck though - his work is absolutely mindblowing. To date, my favourite novel is Survivor, but I'm looking forward to reading Snuff before I see the man himself read at the Edinburgh Book Festival in August. I'm so excited
So, about me? I'm Rachel - English, but have lived in Italy all my life. In the autumn, I'll be leaving Italy for the UK to begin my degree in English Literature. A whole new chapter in my life. Aside from Chuck (and all things involving reading/writing) I am obsessed with music. I play guitar, and sing, and have been doing so for about 7 years. I could list off all my favourite bands, but that would take rather a long while.
ANYway... Hope you're all having a good day.
I thought most of the people on this forum were from the US, hah. WELL! Another European here. I guess I posted around a bit already, but yeah. I'm obviously new as well. 19 years old (soon 20), from The Netherlands, live in Norway at the moment (for 2 more weeks, sad that I'm leaving so soon). Go to college, studying International Business and Languages. I've really found out business is not my thing, languages are. I'm probably gonna do another study after this, we'll see.
Have been in a long-distance-relationship for almost 4 years now (We don't live in the same country), and it's going really well. Hopefully in a year or so, the long distance part of it will be over.
uck. EUROS.
gross.
And you're from Germany?
where do you come from exactly in holland?
I live right near the border, about halfway the country. =P Happen to know a city called Enschede?
i actually do. i´ve been to the netherlands quite often already, not so far up though. more amsterdam and little places by the see.
Ah! Neat. Well, I love in a small place close to there anyway. I go shopping in Enschede a lot on saturdays, tons of German people there then.
I heard something about stores not being open there on saturdays?
You like Amsterdam? I like some parts of it, but it's too crowded and people are rude.
stores are open at saturdays, usually not on sundays though.
i do like amsterdam, lots of museums and even more important, delicious food places! i can´t say that people have been rude though.
Oh, hm. Well, same here. Maybe it's just right across the border that stores aren't open saturdays, I'm not sure, haha.
I like museums as well. Next time I go there (sometime during the summer) I'll be going to the Anne Frank house. I've never been there, but I've always wanted to.
I can't say much about the food places, haven't eaten there much. Glad you haven't seen rude people.
And what's so gross about us?
We love Chuck just as much as the Americans ;)
Hey all,
I've been a fan for a long while. Like most I got into Chuck through the Fight Club movie. I picked up the book one day while I was searching for something new to read besides Sci-Fi and Fantasy.
The rest as they say is history. I love Chuck's stuff, every book is great, though I had a hard time getting trough Diary (maybe because I've been a carpenter living on Martha's Vineyard ). I just finished Rant and Haunted in succession and Invisable Monsters is next.
Hope to meet some intresting people here with slightly expanded views of the universe and perhaps make a friend or two.
A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. ~Albert Einstein~
whoa. new member overload, i dont know what to say to whom..
we've had cultists from egypt and many from sweden over the years. but we can always always use more culture.
we dont really haze here. well.. sometimes. sometimes nate does. and frank definitely does sometimes. and ubik. and that cunt alx, he can be bold and fun from time to time. cussan i think is the best hazer, next to nate that is.
no norms to worry aligning yourself with. just post interesting and thoughtful.. um, thoughts. as for chat, run up there anytime you see someone in it. chat is like a crash course in how to get to know each other. and have fun.
we talk about chuck here sometimes too. also, if youre new and have any pictures with chuck, or a cool picture with a chuck book in the background, like in the bed of a pickup or on a coffee table, send the pict/picts over to dennis so he can add it to the random image section. (right now we're in need of any snuff tour picts from fans.)
and hit anyone up with any questions.
oh, and welcome to the cult !

hey
Im new here... so hello
everything you want to know is in my profile .....if not just ask me!
yeah thats not good but i started reading half year ago...
i wasted the last 9 years with playing computer....nothing else...!
chuck´s stories, ideas and writing style made me change my life a bit and i havent read anything else yet (except this book about japan)
so what should i say when i havent read anything else that influenced me?
just give me some more time and ill add someone....
hey, flesh, one of our german friends.. welcome to the cult.
i found a lot of great authors through chuck, and he has an entire page here dedicated to his recommendations. one of my favorite finds was through this site, and through this site i was able to take a writing intensive directed by that author. and here is one of that author's first short stories, and it's located on this site:
http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net/features/shorts/suffer-the-fool
also there are a few shorts by chuck found here as well:
http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net/features/shorts
ive read hundreds of authors i'd not have known about had it not been for chuck and dennis, had it not been for this site. in fact, chuck's essays on writing is what motivated me to try my hand at the craft. it's been a fun and sometimes arduous, i had a lot of backlog to read as well, not only with the salingers and bret ellises and whatnot but also with the tergunovs and dumases. there have been many tiddles of bliss along the way as well, like cormac mccarthy and steve erickson.
again, welcome to the cult and have fun and look around and enjoy new things. like craig clevenger, for instance.

Hello everyone, I'm new :)
Hi. I've read the majority of Chuck's books, which is the point, right? Haven't read Snuff yet but ordered it from the local library today. Who else still uses libraries? Last book, Rant, I got a free review copy, which was nice, so thanks again publisher and Chuck. I spent a lot of time anguishing over my review, and overwrote it. Oh well. I liked the book. Which is the point, right?
HEllo everyone
I registered here a while back but never really bothered to check out the forums and all of the different parts of the site & am very impressed.
I just thought I'd introduce myself & say hello to the cult before I started posting on the other topics.
hello new people. the new member's welcome thingy is broken and links to this thread, which is appropriately titled "?".
make a new welcome thread so we can make fun of you individually.
Well I was dead set on making my own intro thread but since the "New Member's Intro" forum links directly to this thread I figured this is as good a place as any to start. Scratch that, I've already posted a couple times in the "Book Club" forum so this is as good a place as any to continue.
Stumbled across this site accidently as I was looking for reviews of Clevenger's "...Handbook", had some downtime, registered, and found the place to my liking. I don't have many "reading pals" so it's good to find a place that actually welcomes my book babble.
I actually just resumed my reading ways recently after a short hiatus of video games and brain draining television. How I ever accomplished a life sans literature I'll never know. I'm trying to make up for lost time and the recommendations/reviews help out a lot.
In summation I'm hoping my stay is both enjoyable and extensive. Here's to expanding my mind beyond Dickens and Hemmingway!
dickens sucks. dont read him unless your teacher is making you write an essay. and even then just get an abridged version of what youre reading. long winded boring mother fucker.
welcome, mr love drug. if you like clevenger youll probably dig will christopher baer also. plenty of authors out there for you to stumble into.
quick recommendations: dostoevsky, graham greene, bret easton ellis, alex garland, stephen graham jones, and how about...john kennedy toole. yeah. good enough for me. oh and baer because its spelled almost the same as bear. and pear.
Actually I opine identically about Dickens. Down to the "long winded boring mother fucker" part. I just didn't want to upset anyone who thinks otherwise. Steinbeck snuggles close to Dickens as far as "long winded..." goes.
Thanks for the rec's though. I've read some Dostoevsky as well as some Bret Easton Ellis but I'll be sure to check them all out. I've got so many books on my read list now that I'm becoming more informed as to what's out there.
As I posted in the "Book Club" forum I just finished two of the best books I've read in ages. House of Leaves was a breath of fresh air after reading garbage and over exposed national bestsellers for the past few years. Then I followed it up with Rant, another great book by Chuckie P himself.
Again thanks for the rec's and I think I'll have a lot of material to cover in the next few months.
EDIT: Nice ava by the way. Easily my favorite artist. Good taste.
thank ye, sir.
HOUSE OF LEAVES is unstoppable. so much there. i actually havent read any chuck in a couple of years but i might end up picking up RANT. hearing good things for the most part.
too, yeah, the book lists are ever growing and never ending. good luck compiling and completing yours
Hey Everyone!
I'm not sure if this is where I'm supposed to introdce myself or not, but I figured I'd go ahead anyway considering I'm sure someone would be nice enough to correct me soon after. Hahaha (:
Anyway, my name is Taylor, and being an avid reader/fan of Chuck, I wanted to talk to some people who shared my interests. I've introduced Chuck's works to some of my friends, but they don't share my appreciation. Also, I let my friend Dylan read "Guts"; needless to say...he passed out in our A.P. English class! Hahaha. Okay okay, I felt bad about it in all actuality, but it made for a good story. (:

I once read about 100 pages from House Of Leaves. My boyfriend adores the book and I borrowed it for awhile. For some reason after that, I got stuck, forgot about it, so on. Now I started over again. I'll read it all now.
Hello Taylor and other new people!
Hi everybody,
here I am, and I hope to spend some good time with you folks.
I write from Italy, Tuscany to be precise and Chuck is my favourite mindblower.
I look at your eyes and I see a mirror.
hey taylor
ive seen you in several places thus far, even checked your myspace a few days ago (i'm pretty sure i did anyway) and you seem quite interesting. you really should start your own intro thread. a great way for everyone to get to know you individually and for you to get to know others.
anyrate. welcome to the cult.

Hello! I'm new as well. I brought Fight Club a few years ago at a table-top sale and never really got into it for some reason. I knew it was a film and was fairly succesful, but I had no idea what it was about. I suppose I didn't really like his sense of humour. Then I went away and read several other books: 'Trainspotting' - Irvine Welsh and 'American Psycho' - Bret Easton Ellis and decided that I would give Fight Club another try, so I asked for it for Christmas, took it on holiday to Barcelona and thoroughly enjoyed it. Since then I've picked up Haunted and Non Fiction, I prefer Non Fiction to Haunted, but they're both quite cool. I showed some of my friends Guts and it became a sort of phenomenon at my school with me and my friends, we would talk about how disgusting it was and what we would do if that happened to us!!! Thanks, Dev

Hey everyone. My name is Alex and I'm a Chuck Palahniuk fan... sometimes I feel like I'm one of his characters... anyways, HI !
So I suppose my goal in life is to be hated and then spend my life bitching about how I hate that people hate me. It's as if everything I do leads to someone, somewhere hating me even though I know it's going to happen this way, and I think, "hmmm, I should stop while I'm ahead," but I don't. I just keep pushing until it's too late and then I woe-is-me about wishing for things to be something other than they are.
I know that in the small town I live in, people hate anyone is isn't straight, white, and can drive a tractor, yet, I insist on being a flouncing homosexual with a penchant for lisping without cause and discussing gay sex in an open and honest way. They hate me for that. I'm sure that if it was possible, I would become black, just to make them hate me a little bit more so I could then bitch about how I JUST WANT TO BE ACCEPTED! And I wish I could completely forget how to drive a tractor. It's a lot like a bike, however, believe it or not.
And then at work, I make the lives of almost everyone miserable and while most people don't know that it was me that did it, in some circle of hate, they despise me. I can hear them when they get home from work and check their mailbox, "how in the fuck did this company get my name and address to send me this god damn catalog?" It's me. It's my job. I sell all sorts of information for a whole lot of people. And I like telling people what I do. When I used to do work that was noble, I never told anyone. I never met a new person and said, "I counsel people with AIDS." Now, however, I love saying to people, "I sell your name so Harriett Carter can send you catalogs full of shit you don't need." They hate me more that way. You can't hate someone who does good for the world. And I know that. I'm fully aware of that. MAybe that's why I switched jobs.

Hey maya, welcome. I don't think it's that weird. The new members section is a bit messed up. Might want to just start posting and joining in converstaions in General Discussion and stuff. Hope you stick around here, great to have you.
I am the ghost that haunts my dreams. It's pathetic, really, to be the monster of my own nightmares. Next to you is the only time I feel safe...
