I used to be pretty active in forums...then I stopped for some reason. I came across this one while searching for 'beans'...yeah I cook. Checked it out and thought it was pretty neat.

the forums should be like the writers workshop in the sense that established members can award or retract points for newb contributions and once they reach a certain number than can introduce themselves properly....don't listen to me. i'm not making any sense today.
You make perfect sense. Some car forums do something like that. You get awarded status by the amount of posts and good trades and sales for parts you have done. Except in here you should get points for holding your own, ripping people a new one, being funny, and taking a beating and still coming back, you would pretty much get awarded for Masochism cause thats what it takes to stay here.

What we do is start a Best Post of the Month thing.
Instead of points just have something down there with the quote/reply/report buttons that you click and it tallies them all up like a poll.
Whoever wins gets to have the little salt and pepper shaker icon under their name for the month.

In another forum I visited you got points assimilating to bars (not the one in which you get drunk) up to four of them I think. We soon realized that the bars represented your penis size; the more popular you was, the larger penis you'd get.
That's why I don't think they should do anything like that here. At least not anything that was publicly viewed. Same with post counts not being listed, best thing to happen to the site since Chuck doing the workshops!
