New here, will post more soon!
Hello there,
I am what my name suggests.
I've been looking for a book forum for quite a while, but none of them sufficed. Then I read Invisible Monsters, looked up Palahniuk and clicked onto The Cult.
First off, I loved Invisible Monsters, and I am willing to read (most) of Palahniuk's other works. Though I wouldn't want to get too much of him. It's always a good thing to read other books in between, if you know what I mean. Then, reading Palahniuk's books will come off fresher.
Right now, I'm reading The World According To Garp by John Irving. I just started, actually. And it's going to the book I bring on a trip next week. I won't be able to post when I get there, so hopefully I'll remember to return to this forum afterwards. It surely looks like a fun community!

And if any of you have an account here, I'd love to have you as a contact!
Jeremy
Hey Jeremy! Hope to see you come back.

hey, jeremy. the last trip, i took a memoir by lillian hellman, though we were in new orleans and i didnt get much reading done.. haha
welcome to the cult. the bookclub is full of booktalk, author talk.. if you are ever in the need of book recommends, you'll find them here. when i started here, i'd read invisible monsters and survivor, and a whole lotta star wars and aliens/predator novels. it was very cool to hear about hempel and denis johnson and mark richard and craig clevenger and will baer et cetera
have fun, look around, explore. there are all kinds of fascinating easter eggs here !!

The World According to Garp is such a good book! It's a bit shocking sometimes, mainly raunchy, but definitely worth reading.
Read Rant by Palahniuk. I personally really enjoyed it.
rant was fantastic, yes
but so was survivor
so was lullaby
so was pygmy--though a headache to read haha
and diary
and i loved several of the fucking crazy stories in haunted

I thought Lullaby was mediocre and Haunted was weak.
Rant, Choke, Diary and Survivor are outstanding though. (And obviously, Fight Club)
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
The Acid House by Irvine Welsh is one of the best collection of short stories I've read, I implore you to check it out.

i'm definitely a minority here, but i didnt like the choke book. still is my least favorite-
survivor is probably my favorite, after im

Replace Rant with Invisible Monsters and now we're talking.

i agree with you, frank: im, diary, survivor and fight club were all awesome
but so was rant

I didn't really like Diary. Fight Club, Invisible Monsters, Rant and Survivor are my favorites. I feel like a broken record. haha
Invisible is a phenom man, it's untouchable. That opening scene grabs you by the balls (or whatever lol) and pulls you in like an electron magnet. LOVE THAT BOOK...Hey Kerplunk! No way Lullaby was weak, you just have to enjoy it for what it is. Which is not "Fight Club 2", as so many people I suspect are secretly hoping the next novel will be like every time. The man's almost 40 now and he wants to explore his writing depth and creativity. He's not trying to one-up himself with his next book anymore, he's just letting that brilliantly fucked up mind do it's thing and I say that's just fine.

"The man's" almost 50, actually.

I did not expect it to be 'Fight Club 2', thank you very much.

but so was rant :/
See, Rant and Choke were my two favorites. I even enjoyed Pygmy... quite a bit, actually.
Also: welcome, Jeremy. :]
Jeremy spooookkkkke in the CULT todayyyyyy.

Hello; I just came back from my trip and I still haven't finished The World According To Garp, but that's because I didn't get enough time to read.
It looks like there are devoted fans of each Palahniuk book, and it's really going to make it harder for me to choose which ones to go with... first. Again I'll aim to read all of them. I think it'll be a fight between Survivor and Rant.
Jeremy
survivor was so much fun hahaha rant was difficult to get into right away--but the book wound up being killer

There are so many different opinions about his books; I don't think we can ever settle on how the books were. But I'm having trouble deciding whether or not to read Fight Club. I watched the movie and loved it, but maybe I'm better off reading a new story...
Jeremy
Are you daft??!!
READ IT!!!!

i saw the movie with ed norton. the 25th hour. fucking loved it, assumed it was a screenplay; or rather, i didnt assume it was a book. a few years later, circa 2004, i found that it was a novel, a well received one at that.. so i picked it up. fucking fantastic. particularly for a first novel. AND probably the best film adaptation next to fight club.
yeah, i too read that book after that movie. it was a good choice. clearly

25th Hour is one of my favorites. Particularly the scene where he lashes out to the mirror. I still have the book but couldn't get into it. For some reason I kept giving up. I don't know why.

i thought the writing was impeccable. not clevenger quality, but certainly up around that area. i still have a copy of the book and still thumb it every now and again.
and that mirror scene was a perfect soapbox rant. great character psychology.

Oh absolutely. I also loved the scene between Norton and Pepper under the bridge at the end. That the ending of T2: Judgement Day, and Big Fish are the only movies I cry my eyes out at.

Hey Bro

j/k
Firstly, welcome to the Cult! You've made a wise choice for your "book forum"
Secondly, yes you will and must read ALL the Palahniuk books! Otherwise one of us will find you and destr...I mean make you read them....
Lastly, while this may be a "fun community" as you suggest, and there certainly are some wonderful characters here, keep in mind there seem to be nearly half as many pompous, over-opinionated, "I'm on another plane of intelligence and can't relate to you" kind of people as well. That's just a heads up though. Most times the kats on here are cool, like me.
