HI Everyone! Im obviously new to this site and have never really participated in any other forum like this but I am extemely looking forward to it. Except Im just not really sure how Im supposed to start actively participating it in.
I Graduated Upper St. Clair High school in 1998. Enlisted active duty in the US Marine Corps and left after 2 years. Then attended a few years of college at Marywood University in Scranton PA, and then at St. Petersburg College in Tampa Bay Florida. Majored in Psychology, realized it was worthless, so I quit and still havent finsihed college, but plan to return to school next year and complete a degree in Communications and English Writing at a 4 year university. For the past 6 years I've been doing nothing really but waiting tables and bartending, and have recently had a few brushes with the law. Yes I have a criminal record, not proud of it, but at least it doesnt pertain to anything along the lines of murder, rape, or anything involving minors.
Didnt get into Chuck until after watching Fight Club. Yes I know, because of this Im probably looked at as impure or unauthentic somehow, since it took a movie to get me to open a book. But since then Ive read and loved all of Chucks books. Havent gotten to his last 3 yet but want to ASAP.
I love Chucks writing style. He doesnt write how other people write or how other people even talk. But his style and words would poortrays a person would think, which makes it eeasy and enjoyable for me to get into.
His books have inspired me to become a writer of non-fiction and fiction alike. And although Im content with the fact that I will nevercome close to the genius of Chuck, his style has and will continue to have a very powerful and positive influence on my writing.
Looking forward to being a member on this great site/forum. Thanks and hope to meet alot of you soon! Like said if anyone can give me any advice on how to start becomming an active participate in this, please drop me a line and let me know. Thanks!

You just left? Didn't know that was possible (I thought the initial enlistment had to be four years--at least, I'm pretty sure it was like this twenty years ago)

Don't sweat things like this. Everyone who gets into reading has to get in somewhere. At least you made it. A million people watched that movie and then didn't give it a second thought.

What other writers are you into?

Hah! You went to the same school as my brother! He graduated 2002. I moved away before I went to highschool, but I did go to Fort Couch Jr High.

Hey welcome! I'm glad you are writing! If you want to get into the writing community you should check out the indie authors on goodreads.com etc. Hit me up if you have questions - I don't want to bombard the forum here.

Anyhow, congrats on getting out the military and, what seems, like getting going towards the degree!

Remix,
I can identify with your history. My path is equally skewed. I graduated high school in '87, ran out of college money in '88, joined the Army in '89 for the college money(never thinking I would go to war), did Desert Storm, got out in '92, went back to live with my Mom until February of '94 while being a cook for Chili's. Finally manned up and moved out on my own and started playing in a band. Met my wife while in said band. She took my nuts and guitar and moved me to Akron where I've been ever since. When 'Fight Club' the movie came out I never even knew it was a book because of all the hype around Brad Pitt at the time. I was given a copy of the book by a tenant of mine after we were having a conversation about perceptions and reality. Once I read it I became a 'Palahniukophile.' Like you said, I love his prose and ideas. I've actually quoted some of his writing to a marriage counselor who is our pastor. The sparks were flyin' after that! I've read off and on but I got into reading James Ellroy after reading 'Blood's a Rover' and after seeing some interviews with him reading is my thing. One of Ellroy's interviews was linked to this site which is how I got here. I'm new too want to get better at writing and I think belonging to this forum can only help. Peace, HCT.

I need to get back into the writer's workshop because you are successfully giving enough to peak an interest but leaving it at that--very nicely done. Welcome. And, one of these days, I hope to read some of your work.
