mirkah and i had been talking about new members for a long time. then moe and mirkah offered me the position out of the blue. i had never asked to be a mod, in fact on numerous occasions i pointed out that i would be a bad candidate for moderator. i guess i was wrong.

Mirkah and Moe.ron picked me for the NEW MEMBERS section because they are very smart. They understand who I am as a person and know that i will be as helpful, fair, and genuinely welcoming as possible. Being this way is part of who I am.

I like the new member role because I have seen two approaches to new members in the past that I believe have not worked.

These two failed models are as follows:

1. THE FRAT -- This is the most-commonly used tactic. Bullying or browbeating new members. Making fools of people constantly. Calling them out. Harrassing them. Embarassing them to the point where they worship you and do whatever you say. Or leave. I think that the administrators of this site and Chuck himself would agree that The Cult is not a college frat.

2. THE KNITTING CIRCLE -- The other extreme. Too nice, to winky-dinky. Excessive use of smiley faces, cowtowing, and other bullshit. People won;t feel at home if they do;t trust you. You can't trust somebody who is too helpful, because they look desperate. Nobody wants to be around a desperate person.

Instead of these two bunk models, i propose:

ORIENTATION -- The emphasis is on slow but steady integration. You give the people the information they need, act in a kind and considerate manner. Pay attention to them, but make sure that they speak for themselves. Encourage them to expand on their opinions in a public way, to contribute to the massive and still-growing resource that it is this website.

The internet is ever changing. It's not just for antisocial shut-ins anymore. It's actually becoming a decent place to meet friends, muses, work collaborators, and spouses. People who love this community and want it to stay around need to embrace these changes.

my friends at my old job were a bunch of skcofflaw, slackass jokesters, and we used to pull pranks like that all the time on eachother.
