How to pronounce 'Palahniuk'
Hi all. I'm fairly new to Chuck's books (So far have read Fight Club, Haunted, and Diary in that order), and fairly new to this website. I think I should start on the right foot by at least learning how to pronounce 'Palahniuk' correctly, You see, I've been saying to people recently 'hey, you've seen Fight Club haven't you, well I've just read the book by Chuck Palahniuk - you gotta read it'. I'm quietly terrified someone will say to me 'oh my god you moron, it's not Palaaah-neyuk it's "Paaalah-neeeyik', hey everyone, did you just hear this loser mispronounce Chuck's name?' I will be publicly outed as a big faker.
I'd love it if someone could give me a phonetic spelling. Also, while you're at it, could someone do clique and sans-serif too? Cheers
Welcome.
In the F.A.Q. in the author section you can read :
How do you pronounce Palahniuk?
PAUL-AH-NIK (Paula Nick). The story goes that Chuck's Grandparents decided to pronounce their name as a combination on their two first names, Paula and Nick. As Chuck relates it: "So many Palahniuk's drop letters from the name. We kept all the letter's but we probably say it the worst.". The 'Old World' pronunciation is PAH-la-NYOOK
I prefer Pah-la-nyook and shall pronounce it as such forever. It has a much better ring to it, you can't just make up the pronunciation of your name, fraudsters.
Well I still pronounce it " Pah-lah-nee-euk".

I mix it, sometime I say Paula-Nick and sometimes I just read it in polish that is just Pa-la-hniuk

I prefer Chucky P.
Makes him sound informal and tough at the same time.

Maybe it's because....we both are French ...
Théorie intéressante...

Well thanks so much everyone - I guess the key is choosing one and sticking to it no matter what.
I remember seeing a great comedy sketch (Smith & Jones - Brit comedians) where a reporter was interviewing a movie industry type about the latest Tarantino film. Through the whole interview the movie guy, who should have known better, was mispronouncing Tarantino and the interviewer was quietly cracking up, and getting the guy to say Tarantino as many times as possible, while prolonging the interview as much as possible. When the movie guy finally twigged he was like 'you utter bastard'. You had to feel for him.
It's deffiently pronounced Paul-uh-nick
that's my last name also and its deffiently one of my pet peeves when people miss pronounce my name. especially since im in the military and we go by last names.
and that whole grandparents name thing?
no. the Palahniuk name came over from the Ukraine, its quite popular there.
plus his grandparents are my great-grandparents and Paula and Nick are not their names.
fyi.

I was about to tell a story about the pronunciation of Palahnuik, New York, and Tom, but I realized the retelling wouldn't be very funny. But it was quite amusing at the time.

What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
In one of his audio books - the guy that reads the book totally messes up the name. He says something like, "Pauooliuneeack" (that's the best I can do trying to imitate the pronunciation
I was going to make a thread like this when I joined, but I was afraid everyone would hate me for drawing that much attention to myself. That terrified me more than running into Chuck one day at Powell's and pronouncing his name wrong. Albeit, not by much.
Paula-nick sounds good to me.
Mom's gonna fix it all soon.

Hello sailor girl. I'm going to assume you have no problem with seamen since you're a sailor and all. If you wanna chat my email is saltyswallow@aol.com.

Best. Response. Ever.

Why is this even a thread?
In what scenario would you need to pronounce it one hundred percent correctly? I mean, I'm not really sure which of his books is actually recommendable at this point, and if you meet the guy, and accidentally mispronounce it, I'm sure he wouldn't care enough to correct you anyway.
"...you want to be truly unselfish? Love someone or die for someone. Those are the only good deeds you can perform without any hope of personal gain."
Because it's the very first question in the FAQ, that's why.

That is...suprising.
"...you want to be truly unselfish? Love someone or die for someone. Those are the only good deeds you can perform without any hope of personal gain."
I can't believe I missed that.
Or, wait, I mean THAT's why I didn't make a thread about this.
Mom's gonna fix it all soon.
I think it's threadworthy, considering how often it's mispronounced, even by that guy from G4 who reviewed the Cult Documentary.
Even MORE threadworthy is the fact that sailorgirl claimed relation to Chuck, but her veracity withered under the strength of my HMMMMM LOLcat. It's the greatest truth detector on the internet.
It's not that uncommon a name.
This is why we can't have nice things.
I've only ever heard of one.
