Hi there from Seattle
Hello, just became a member of The Cult. I have visited the website many times, but never the forums. I became aware, very rapidly, of the great community that resides here. Already, I've gotten some amazing help with writing questions in the research forum. I am also thinking very seriously about joining the writer's workshop, in order to give and recieve invaluable criticism from my fellow Palahniuk fans.
My favorite authors include: Bret Easton Ellis, Douglas Coupland, Christopher Moore, David Sedaris, Jeff Lindsay, Arthur Nersesian, et cetera.
Also, if anyone from the Seattle area knows of any good book clubs or is interested in starting one, please let me know.
Looking forward to being an active member of The Cult!

Welcome to The Cult.
I know we've spoken briefly in a couple of threads but I thought I'd give you a proper welcome.
I'd strongly implore you to join the workshop if you're serious about becoming a writer. Are you working on anything in particular at the minute?
Bret Easton Ellis is my favourite author! So you automatically get +10 in my points book for that. What's your favourite novel by him?
I hope you stick around!
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.
and Elliot bay books has a ton of book clubs that you can join, or even start yourself I think. I'd check Hugo House too. They're a really great writer's community and group place in the Seattle Area.

I have thanked you more than anyone else today.... immediately tangible or otherwise. So, thanks for the cordial welcome.
I am working on something right now, but I just started it. I like to write essay usually, but I'm hoping my current project turns into something longer. I have many ideas for the story, but I also like to create it as I go.
I could never choose a favorite Ellis novel. I haven't read Rules of Attraction yet, as I am trying to save one. Very excited for Imperial Bedrooms. I guess it would be between Less Than Zero and Lunar Park, both for very different reasons. What about you?

Thanks, LeHaHi, I'll look into those.

I'm glad I could be of help.
Well good look with your current project. Is it based upon what you asked in the research forum?
The Rules of Attraction is amazing. Then again, I'm pretty biased as I think BEE is God. I can't wait for Imperial Bedrooms. I'm hoping that Bret does a book signing over here.
It's tough to decide between American Psycho and Less Than Zero - I guess they are both my favourites. I couldn't really flaw any of his books but if I had to choose one I liked the least it'd probably be Glamorama.

and where do you live in Seattle? i'm here for college. I love it. And Hugo House is probably a bit more edgy than Elliot Bay Books' book clubs would be.....I don't know.

You related to iamjacks... by any chance? I'm not too fond of him either.
HI SEATTLE DUDE. Welcome! You seem cool. What do you think of the TV shows that are popular now? I think the big ones lately are Glee, Lost, and the Olympics. Your thoughts?
hey, louis; welcome to the cult
the workshop is the only place to receive feedback from work, not to mention the nuts-n-bolts value of thirty six essays
there are a few on the features section of the site by authors who are friends to the cult:
http://chuckpalahniuk.net/features/essays
and read some short stories here:
http://chuckpalahniuk.net/features/shorts
so you can get to know the remarkable clevenger and badass chris baer--if you arent already acquainted..
as far as the essays, nothing beats chuck's first six.. it's like he assumed that every member participating was new so he started with the basics, like authority and theme and the hidden gun in narrative fiction, choruses in the work and submerging the "i" in a first person narrative-
the workshop is definitely where you can learn a whole lot and quickly. i remember that in june alone, we had a hundred and forty submissions. that was a tough month to be a nominator (esp. being that i was in new orleans for a week and worked from a ninth floor window while my the-fiance-now-wife was in conference), but exciting because all of those people were working hard on their craft and we feedback is strong and invaluable..
it does take work. for every story you submit for feedback, you need to give at least three and up to five quality reviews first. just give the honest critique you would like to receive. and if that makes you uncomfortable, no worries.. there are a few threads on critiquing and there are six members always around to help out with questions or need; four mods and two administrators lurk the workshop daily. so you arent gonna be thrown in and left to fend for yourself.
also, and this is just a suggestion.. build up your profile and create a bio blog
those are helpful for workshopping, i implore you
and, again, welcome to the cult !!

Thanks Kabol(I just now read your post, a little late), I have since joined the workshop, and am working through the essays. I am looking very forward to reaping the benefits to being a part of this tightly knit(even if cut throat at times) communtiy. Thanks again for your welcome, advice, and suggestions.
