hiya im johnny and im a newbie who is just about to read my 1st CP book the fight club...
My bro just read the copy i lent him and said it was good, so im googling the author and reviews when i stumble upon this forum. i liked the pretentious bookshelf thread, and was won over when i saw a lot of leather bound books. i wanted to know the titles of these old books and what editions they were. My mind raced with envy as i realised some on here will prob have some Olympia Press books.
i also noted to my shame that a top ten cult book list here had several novelists i'd never heard of, so i thought it was time i joined the 21st century and tried some contemporary reads, lol. i just finished birdsong a few days back and the books b4 that were parkhust tales, trashy crap written by an ex prisoner telling the usual con stories. Another trashy crime book that was so good i forgot the title and travels with charly which if im honest i didnt even finish, although im a huge J S fan.
i tend to go through phases when reading, themes genres authors or not reading at all. one of the 1st cult authors i came across was c bukowski back in 80's when i read a review about barfly, saw the movie which i enjoyed so went to library and was surprised to find they had factotum and post office. After that finding culty stuff was either through newspaper reviews, bibliographies, word of mouth, music, movies and serendipity. with the internet and instant info the cult label could be viewed as an oxymoron. its like as a kid males my age can remember looking through the lingerie section in the littlewoods or whatever catalogue our mothers had, if we didnt have access to girlie mags. now young uns have sexually stimulating stuff everywhere, in adverts videos just about everywhere. lol im sounding like ballard or something lol
due to my circumstances (sad lonely jobless depressed fuckwit) and small circle of friends as well as age im now lagging behind in my cool culty knowledge. i have found this prob permeating into my music tv and movie chioces, so here i am, hoping to find some interesting recommendations and if im lucky maybe a friend or two.cheers
johnny
