Hello. Welcome to the cult Smile

Have you read Craig Clevenger's The Contortionist's Handbook?

It's brilliant. Easily one of the best books I have ever read. I think if you like Palahniuk you'd like this book. I haven't read Clevenger's other book but I'm tracking that one down next to read.

Nice to meet you and cheers,
Nikki

It sounds rad just by the title, haha. I'll have to look into it for sure, thank you.

Oh and I just noticed you're from Beaverton. I'm from Oregon as well!

What part of Oregon you from? I was born on the southern Oregon coast, lived in Lakeside and North Bend until I was twelve, then moved to the Portland area. Also lived in Eugene for a couple years while I was going to art school.

Yes, you have to check the book out! Oregon gets a nod in it too. There's just something about Oregon, isn't there?

Not to cast a shadow on any over the other great states, but yes, Oregon is boss, haha.

I'm a coastie.
I live in Newport.
I lived in Portland for a while but I couldn't stand being away from the ocean, haha.

Newport is nice. I stayed in the Sylvia Beach Hotel for a week last March- just to write and chill out by myself.

I miss the coast. But I hung out at Fort Stevenson yesterday so I got my ocean fix for a little bit.

Yes, I write tons. I'm part of the workshop here. It's pretty cool. Do you write?

A block from the Sylvia! How cool is that?

I don't write a lot, per se. But I've been told I'm really good.
I passed most of my High school english classes on extra credit alone, from writing short stories.
I've always been a really good reader and all that stuff.

I've been wanting to start a novel or something really bad. I'm super inspired but I'm havin' trouble getting those first words out.

As soon as I get some extra money I definitely want to join the workshop!

Have you read Dean Koontz's "Relentless"?! It is by far my favorite book of all time. I have read alot of Koontz's work. Prolific, endearing, suspenceful, and life changing, that is Dean R. Koontz. If you haven't read "relentless" I suggest going to your local CVS pharmacy and picking it up!

Seriously though,welcome!

I think this lil nigga is being sarcastic. You know, like a smug, snarky cultist would, ragging on those bestselling authors. Could it be he's a natural?

I agree.

Big tip here: most people are full of crap and sarcasm, some without the benefit of actually being funny. If you are not sure whether someone is trying to be funny or not it's safer to assume they are trying to be funny (and are likely making fun of you in the process).

If you want more serious folk, gravitate towards the workshop. That's not to diss this forum; it's just how it is. It's pretty much all fun and games here.

I don't mean to rag on Koontz or anything there. I'm more of a King man myself, but that's irrelevant.
I'm just saying that there's a metric buttload of better books out there and I'd hope that after a year here, he found a suggestion somewhere that turned out to be a better book.

I think we can all agree,as readers, we will always be progressing,we will always be looking for more, until the last pages are read. Personally,I thought I HAD "IT" with Henry Miller,I thought this dude knows what's up! The first time I read Tropic of Cancer I was preaching the word of Miller to anyone that would listen. Yeah, that "IT" Kerouac and Cassidy talked about in On the Road...that mysterious and devine "IT". Henry Miller had IT!

THEN all of a sudden someone gave me a book...a paperback. And,that little paperback book was "Winter Moon" by Dean R Koontz. It had EVERYTHING I could ever ask for in art, philosophy, literature, and life but most of all it had an alien octopus that had the power to posses minds and electrical appliances. DRK 4 Life! Smile

Seriously though..like for REAL..Dean Koontz books,to me,are like watching 7th heaven or some WB drama. It's terrible but for whatever reason I'll read them, except for the odd thomas series, them shits is good! Seriosuly.

Sorry if you took me seriously fellow new guy :)Don't read Koontz,he supports the republican party!

It's because the workshop is such an incredible resource that I wish I'd known it earlier so I think others are doing the same- getting the word out Smile

That is completely understandable and cool but you guys come on a litttttllle too strong. That was the reason for my little stupid reaction to your plug for Craig Clevenger. Like I said,it's cool, but a little too strong. It's like passing girlscouts and you have to lie and tell them you already bought some cookies. I dunno, just sayin'

In that case, I'll start seriously looking into it. A long weekend in Oregon could be just what the doctor ordered.

Kansas City is just starting to wear on me.

I do come off strong but there a few people here who appreciate the fact that I do. Why just last week one of them sent me a care package that included an electric plastic vagina- just in case I broke mine (or was serious about having a dick). What can I say? Not everyone's a fan?

See,I can respect your passion! More personality, less robotic adds.

Before I joined the board I added the cult to myspace and found a link in a bulletin to some shorts by Craig Clevenger, they were great. "Mother Howl" it was called was the best in my opinion. So, fellow-new-guy to dip your toes in the Clevenger water you should explore the site and find "mother howl" and others by Clevenger and other Cult-like authors.

There,I'm not totally anti-adds Smile
