Greetings from southern California
My name is Stacy, and I'm pleased to join the Cult.
I live in the desert, about 2 hours east of San Diego, 1 hour west of Yuma, AZ, 15 minutes from Mexico, and 2 hours from Palm Springs.
A couple of sayings about El Centro:
Where the sun spends the winter, and hell spends the summer.
In the winter you don't long for heaven, in summer you don't fear hell.
Our average temperature from late June till September is about 115. Starting in May the temps hit 108 regularly. Friggin' hot--nearly everybody wears a hat, and no one goes barefoot. We carry umbrellas to keep the sun off.
We also have the biggest cockroaches I've ever seen. *doing peepee gross-out dance*
Gawd, I HATE them. I've trained my dog to kill them, so she comes running whenever she hears me shriek. LOL Good doggie.
I am an enthusiastic member of bookcrossing.com. You may see my profile here: http://bookcrossing.com/mybookshelf/abbynormal92243/referral
After seeing so many public libraries die from lack of funding, I'm thrilled to see what BC is doing, and take every opportunity I have to share my books. I do, however, get irritated and snotty when people I don't know PM me asking for a book like I owe it to them, without offering a trade. (Yeah, it happens about twice a week.)
If you're interested in trading and live in the US, hit me up. I'm easy. And if I know what you like, I may add another book or two as a surprise.
My boyfriend has an eBay store where he sells books cheap (that link's on my BC profile)
okay.
I'm looking forward to participating in the workshops, but I'm a little confused.
Where do I go to start critiquing?
ack
I'm overwhelmed.
Here's what I want to do: I want to first do the critiques I need to in order to submit my story, then I want to learn how to do them RIGHT.
I've already read the thread by Alex Cossun (sp?) so I know what reviews to read as examples.
What else do I need to know?
Thanks in advance for your time. I'm glad to be here.
Hello Abbynormal.
I am Dan.
I live in St.thomas. It is 14 minutes from Port Stanley, 20 minutes from London, 2 hours from Hamilton, 15 minutes from Aylmer, 10 minutes from Union, 45 minutes from Glencoe, 20 minutes from Fingal, 35 minutes from Mount Bridges, 55 minutes from Brantford, 15 minutes from Burwell, 23 minutes from Tilsonburg, 17 minutes from Oxford, and 26 minutes to Iowna.
Welcome to the fun. Im in Bakersfield, an hour from nowhere. Or an hour from everywhere...depending on how fast you can travel.
Never been to El Centro, but then there's lots of places I've never been. Thailand for example.
I totally just ran out of syrup, but I've discovered that waffles are quite good with butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Just something to keep in mind.
J-
you're making fun of me, Dan. I smell it.
how far are you from Winchester Cathedral, Stonehenge, and Scotland?
Your profile says you manage a gun shop. Care to share a bit about that?

Heavily clever of you, ma'lady.
Two arrow shots, a stones throw, a squirrel's hop, two deer's leaps and a turtle's trek.
And Scotland, tis always in my heart. Ya'see, I happen to be the long lost relative of Sir William Wallace. Sh'yeah..
Your profile says you manage a gun shop. Care to share a bit about that?
all right.
I'm not sure which part's most interesting so please feel free to ask questions.
I was dropped into this managing/selling job on my head. I knew nothing when I started, and was afraid of guns--even the unloaded ones. 'Course, I never SAID so.
It's been two years since then, and I've grown to relish what I do.
I have my choice of guns to wear--I typically choose a snubnose S&W Model 10 .38spl, but my boss gets a kick out of customers' reactions when I wear the 8" Colt .44.
My favorite part of this job is handling the firearms. I love the smooth slide of a Beretta 92 or 96, and I'm nuts about the Walther P22 & any semi-auto Ruger.
I'm more into handguns than rifles or shotguns--if I was a hunter, though, I'd go for a Beretta Over/Under (686 or 687).
California laws on gun ownership/gun buying & selling are strenuous. The paperwork is monstrous. We're the only seriously stocked gun shop in our area--the other gun shop doesn't stock more than one or two guns, preferring to special order them.
I wish we had a shooting range near-by. It's easier to know what you want if you have a chance to shoot.
We have ants. They come earlier every year.
I recently broke the magazine to my Calico M100P, talk about a pain in the ass.. Since stupid California has such strict assault weapon laws I have to drive all the way to Nevada just to replace it. Since you are in a gun shop I am assuming you can help me bypass all of this nonsense somehow.
My favorite weapon to shoot has got to be my SKS, talk about nasty. I wish I had bought up a bunch of those pre-ban detachable magazines.

*scowling*
Two arrow shots, a stones throw, a squirrel's hop, two deer's leaps and a turtle's trek from every one of them? And how far is that, exactly?

The SKS ranks up there with the mini 14 (.223)--
since you have the attached magazine, have you thought of using stripper clips? Granted, it's only, what, ten to a clip, but that's better than 5.
Ruger makes a Mini 30, which looks just like the Mini 14, except that it's 7.62X39, and guys swear by it, too.
FYI, if you own a mini 14, stay away from ProMag and USA after market magazines. The cartridges don't feed right. I've heard Ramline's the best, other than Ruger's own (except they don't make anything but 5-round mags)

hi, J. Thanks for the welcome.
If your posts become mangled and incomprehensible, I'll know you've found the syrup.
or the tequila.

Wow, the same joke twice. It's a little further than your shining intellect, gun-twit.

I was actually curious.
Have I somehow offended you, or are you just naturally unpleasant and surly?
edited to add: never mind. I see you haven't had any sleep and may not get any for a while.

Do you have a clitoris piercing?
Do you have a clitoris piercing?
Why? Is there a group for that in here, too?
btw, did you find the workshop stuff ok?
I've not yet seen a group for clitoral piercing, but you have to be into self mutilation if you're gonna submit any work, so I'd imagine vaginal disfiguring is a given.
btw, did you find the workshop stuff ok?
Yes!
I'm poking around now, getting the feel of things. I'm going to follow (someone's?) advice and print stories out, and I'll print out a few reviews, too, to help guide me as I go.
Thanks for your help!

note to self: keep vagina off sleeve
Welcome to The Cult!
I visited El Centro last October; was visiting San Diego and drove east to El Centro to see the place. Nice drive through the mountains and there you are! My grandparent lived there a LONG time ago - farmers, of course. Went to visit their old tombstones in the cemetery off Gillette Road.
Maybe Chuck P. will have a book signing in San Diego you can attend.
Was wondering if El Centro recieved any big rainfall from the storms earlier this year?

Thanks, TF.
El Centro is best in October---the heat's just dissipated and people are buoyant.
I wouldn't be surprised if your grandparents knew my ex-husband's family. I swear they're related to at least half the Valley. And they're at least acquainted with the other half.
Yeesh.
We did get a good amount of rain this year. Wish there was more coming.
I expect Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego will be interested in having Chuck visit. We have a couple of independent bookstores here, but we don't get many authors for booksignings. Bummer.
Howdy, AbbyN
Welcome to The Cult. Prepare to become addicted to these threads while becoming a better writer. All I've done for the past 5 days is check in here, rewrite the same damn two pages on the same damn novel, and eat salmon.
I'll leave you to figure out the salmon part on your own. Although JPledger knows the story. I would advise you not to believe his version of it.
Figured it was time to freak Nightrious out again.

Hi, Luddy. Thanks for the welcome.
One more addiction. Good.

Hi stacy, welcome to the cult.
here's what you need to do to start reviewing:
Read the Writer's Workshop Reviewing Quick Tips, then go to the Self-Assignment tab on the left of the Writer's Workshop page and click on Read Submissions.
All of this and a lot more information is available in the Writer's Workshop Getting Started section.
Have fun and get those reviews done! Further Writer's Workshop-related questions should go to this section:
http://www.chuckpalahniuk.net/community/forumdisplay.php?f=160
that's the self assignment questions section. Good luck!
