Greetings and salutations
That was my best Christian Slater in "Heathers" text impersonation.
I'm a writer from eastern Kentucky that pays the bills by slinging words for the local newspaper. I became a Palahniuk fan around 1999 or 2000 after reading Invisible Monsters. Palahniuk's unique style and subject matter, particularly in Survivor, got me excited about writing fiction again. I've landed a decent amount of publications in some pretty cool places and am currently putting together my second collection of short stories.
After working as a journalist for a few years, I was accepted to gradate school and went on to earn an MFA in writing in 2007. I'm back in news again, but I hope to land a job teaching writing at the college level.
I don't remember when I found this site, but I've been a visitor for quite some time. Picked up Postcards From the Future when it first came out.
Along with being a fan of Chuck, I am also a huge fan of Hubert Selby, Jr., Harry Crews, and Bret Easton Ellis.
The music of Nick Cave makes my ears and brain happy, and I also dig his two novels.
Okay, there's some random information for the manila folders.
Anyway, hope to meet some cool folks on here and get involved in various discussions on every topic under the e-sun.
- Jarrid
Hey, mirka. Thanks for the cake.
I am pretty sure the workshop admin (VP?) is goods friends with my editor. I think they went to school together. Weird world.
Yeah, I saw Cave in "Wings of Desire." He also has a cameo in "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford." I actually own four Cave-related DVDs (Including The Birthday Party's "Pleasure Heads Must Burn") and "The Proposition" which is one of my favorite flicks.
I knew this would be a cool place.
Welcome!

Thanks! Have some cake.
That cake needs to happen in my LIFE. Omg.
Where did you get your MFA? Did you like the program?
There is hope, but not for us.
Where did you get your MFA? Did you like the program?
Yeah, that cake is a beast.
I got my MFA from Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. It's a low residency program that usually takes two years to complete. As for liking it, it was okay. I made some contacts in the publishing world and some of the workshops were good. The best part, I think, was spending time in an environment with fellow writers and discussing writing and art. Some of the lectures were informative, and it does make you put your fingers to the keyboard in order to write a creative thesis. Also, doing a critical thesis (about 30 pages on a specific author, group of authors, or literary techniques) helped me grow as both a reader and writer.
Thanks! Have some cake.
ha, I like you already! I think you out 'fan' me when it comes to Nick Cave. I've only seen him in Wings.
Have you met Mark (VP)? Small, weird,, but very cool world!
You mentioned that you're editing your second collection of stories. Is your first available? I'm a huge fan of short stories and it drives me crazy that supposedly (or really) they don't sell as well as novels.
Have you read any Thom Jones? His collection 'Cold Snap' is probably one of my favorite books. The title story is my favorite short.

I actually think I met Mark in a couple of classes at Morehead State University. Then, back in 2002, I am pretty sure he came to the newspaper office and went out to lunch with my editor.
My first collection of stories was actually my creative thesis for my MFA. The second collection I am working on are all short-shorts, or flash fiction.
I've read "Sonny Liston was a Friend of Mine" and really dug it. I'll add "Cold Snap" to the list of must-reads.
If you'd like to read a couple of my stories (and that would be awesome if you did) I'll link two of them that are online.

Hey, Jeremy. Cool Holden Caulfield quote (Goodbye, Salinger). I'm partial to, "This is a people shooting hat. I shoot people in this hat."
I'm not a fan of flash fiction, no offense. I read your first piece and I think you're a fine writer. Some great lines and details. Flash fiction feels too hurried and doesn't satisfy me as a reader. I feel cheated out of an experience when I read it, like the author couldn't be bothered to craft something intricate. That may sound horribly judgemental, and I'm sorry. But that's how I feel about flash fiction. And also Slam Poetry while I'm at it.
No offense taken, mirka. I write longer stories as well. The reason I like flash is the fact that the writer has to pull everything as tight as possible or it doesn't work. Experience with flash helps me edit my longer stories.

I suppose it can be a great exercise for a writer but the piece I read 'The Proper Way to Introduce a Vorpal Blade into Conversation' reads to me like it deserves to be a longer work. (Excellent title by the way.)
Again, maybe that's taste.
If you want, send me a longer story via email. I'd love to read more. Don't feel obligated, though, please.

Welcome dude, I think you'll like it around here.

Thanks, guys. I'm feeling welcomed as all hell. It's nice.
I just recently saw "The Proposition" and it was indeed, a very awesome movie.
Hello and Welcome Jarrid
I like your tatse in authors,
Greetings from Ireland

Awesome that you guys dig some of the same stuff I do. It's one of the reasons I signed up for the forum in the first place.
Welcome.
I love Bret Easton Ellis. What's your favourite novel by him? I'm guessing it's American Psycho!? On the presumption you've read Less Than Zero.. Are you looking forward to the release of Imperial Bedrooms?
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember... that is the illusion.

Heya Jarrid, welcome. Our Workshop Administrator is from Lexington.
I'm a big fan of Nick Cave's music, but not his novels. Did you see his cameo in the film 'Wings of Desire'?
Also, here's a welcome cake:
