Frustrated with Fight Club's sheer awesomeness...
I'm a published non-fiction writer; however, I have long wanted to enter into the fiction world, as I have always found that far more fun and a natural release for my creativity. When I read Fight Club, however, I quickly grew frustrated because that was EXACTLY the novel I wanted to write!! Very disheartening to some across a book like that and wonder how I can ever hope to write something that relevant to my own life and to the style of writing I hope to acheive one day. I like Chuck's "I don't give a shit" attitude, and I'm trying to break out of my conservative shell to let that side of my writing evolve and, as they say, let the chips fall where they may. Anyway, it's be interesting to hear from anyone who had the same experience that I did - equal parts amazement and frustration...

Tom,
I think I understand where you're coming from. Before beginning to write, I read a lot, still do, but I probably would have opened that notebook sooner had I not been a little intimidated by certain authors.
Everyone has different tastes - although we can probably safely assume that everyone here loves Chuck's work - but once in a while you come across a book or an author who manages to say and evoke a feeling that rings perfectly true with how you view the world. It's great but it also makes it harder for you to feel you have anything original to say. But it's no different for a beginner guitar player who hears Jimi Hendrix for the first time: does he give up, thinking he can't ever be that good, or does he acknowledge the doors that were kicked down, and take the inspiration to learn all he can from him but follow his own path, wherever that may take him?
Good luck.
Tom
I suppose you could sue Chuck for stealing your book.
People throw this LOL thing around a lot but I did just LOL, hard. Thanks.
Good points - thanks!
I just googled Thomas B Hunter and the first entry was a link to a Florida Sex Offenders list. Interesting.
Well his name is in print and it is non-fiction...
i'd imagine Hunter is a pretty common last name.
This is all too perfect. The guy's last name is Hunter. He is a sex offender. And has a non-fiction book.
Chuck's "I don't give a shit" attitude?
Tuffy the Dump Truck may rarely increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke. The risk may be greater if you have heart disease or increased risk for heart disease (for example, due to smoking, family history of heart disease, or conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes), or with longer use. Tuffy should not be taken right before or after heart bypass surgery. Also, Tuffy may infrequently cause serious (rarely fatal) bleeding from the stomach or intestines. This effect can occur without warning symptoms at any time while taking Tuffy. Older adults may be at higher risk for this effect. (See also Precautions and Drug Interactions sections.) Stop taking Tuffy and get medical help right away if you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects: bloody or black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision changes, slurred speech. Ask your doctor if Tuffy is right for you.
i think he mean's his "I don't give a shit" attitude pertaining to just Fight Club, not just his everyday normal attitude.

I'm not a writer but I've been awed by books the way you describe. For me, it feels more like I'll never read a book so good and my life as a reader is over.
Hopefully, the amazement you feel will linger but the frustration will evolve into inspiration and you'll write your own amazing novel.
