A Englishman Not From London
Good morning (or afternoon...or evening depending on time zone).
My name is LJ and I'm a noob. Thought I'd post a little introduction aboard the 'New Members' thread.
I'm a Brit but, unlike a number of other threads I've read, I'm not a Londoner or a southerner. I'm camped in York - Yorkshire born n' bred - and am a Journalism graduate with a penchant for music journalism, random scribbling, alternative thoughts, things on a tangent and art. To date I've never penned a novel but I'd like to think I will one day. My current plans reside around forging a career in writing (somehow) without moving to London and to continue brainstorming quirky ideas for a graphic novel I want to write, draw and push.
I've read most of Palahniuk, Ellis and am working my way through Coupland. I have a wife who loves Times Arrow by Amis and is pushing me to read it so I imagine that'll be soon. I also love reading gonzo journalism rants and the work of Lester Bangs. I often moan about the NME and can generally be found talking about music wherever possible. I joined the good ship Cult to chat and get some recommendations as I intend to read lots in '09. Couple with my gym obsession, desire to create and live a life, I should be in for a busy year.
I've read the forums without joining for a couple of months so all thats left to say is 'HEY people'
"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat. "We're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat. "or you wouldn't have come here"
Hi there, welcome! You'll certainly get some good chat and recommendations if that's what you're after. What music are you currently listening to?
I don't like NME either, what do they know?
Welcome!
I go through phases. At the moment I'm listening to a lot of classic rock - AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Stones, Aerosmith, Crue, Guns N Roses, etc
My tastes are bannered under anything remotely rock-based so I listen to anything from indie to heavy metal. Fave bands - Guns N Roses, Motley Crue, Metallica, Megadeth, Led Zep, Rolling Stones....could go on.
I'm up for musical recommendations as well as literary recommendations if Chuck fans are accompanying their reading with some awesome tunes.
What are you listening to?

What's the name of that one meat-market nightclub in York?
*shudders at the memories*
I like it up there though. Nice city. Shit loads of hen dos, so it kinda reminds me of my town (Brighton) - albeit with a facelift.
Anyway, welcome!
Meat-market nightclub? Hmm. The dog nightclubs (and the ones I wholly avoid) are Gallery? BPM? Toffs? Nexus? Reflex?
Any of them ring any bells. Gallery is the 'best' townie club but I can't stand the place. Over expensive, dickhead bouncers, cheap clientele...
For a city with so much, York sucks on the nightclub front. I stick to my indie/rock holes
Hen do's, stag do's, tourists - York is amock with 'em. Can be a bloody nightmare just going about your regular business but such is life in York...being a Brighton lad I'm sure you have exactly the same.

Hmm, I'm not exactly cutting edge when it comes to music, but on my stereo lately I've been playing Acid Tongue by Jenny Lewis, which I like a lot, the new Ryan Adams album, Cardinology, which is a bit too easy listening, and Stay Positive by The Hold Steady, which is awes. Ask Riddlegimp, he's got the music goods!
Ya had me until you mentioned being a gym junkie but I suppose if a fellow Brit can't be polite to you then what the fucks this world comin to.
By the way not all blitey folk round here are southerners, I too come from Yorkshire, strong in arm n fucked in't head blah blah blah.
I must admit I love York though, had some seriously good times there but what the fuck is such a nice town doing with what is a serious contender for the shittest museum outside of shitty museum town?

Welcome! We've got a good little crew around here (although I'm relatively new myself, in a round-a-bout way). Glad to have ya.
As for the music recommendation, my favorite band is Old 97's. Their latest album is my favorite. I pretty much listen to their genre and blues or blues-rock. You could try Wilco, Drive-by Truckers, Lucero, Uncle Tupelo.... oh! And the Black Keys. Great blues/southern rock-ish type band.
Welcome! I was a little nervous posting because of all the "Brighton lad" and "loads of hens" talk. It's charming, just daunting!
Whoah...multiple q's
Stonecoyote - no worries mate, I'm not a roid rager or owt, just have got mysen into a solid gym routine that means I actually enjoying getting up at the crack of dawn to go to gym. As for my northerner comments, I started reading through newbie welcomes and they all said london on 'em. I got defensive, lol.
Littlemiss - Some crackin' recommendations. I already listen to The Black Keys and am a bit of a fan.
Morey - Sorry to disapoint but I've never been on themanwhofellasleep.com board.
Mirka - Don't be daunted. Come on in, kick yer shoes off and have a cup of tea
All - Cheers for your welcomes.

Morey - what's the tale behind the tattoo? As I mentioned earlier, I'm really into ink and tattooing.

Thank you, much. I'll try not to say ya'll got any sugar for this here tea.
Mirka, do you mean "as tha got sugar" us northerners are really lazy when it comes to talking, it sounds somewhere between pikey and a stroke victim where I come from. I know cockneys invented rhyming slang to conduct dodgy deals without any outsiders under standing but in Yorkshire we just talk, any outsiders don't have a prayer of understanding. Sometimes we just growl at each other which would probably be rude most places but is totally acceptable here.
Beardofzeus, welcome to the nut house, if you want insane chat that can go off at a tangent that Einstein couldn't get his head round then you've found the right place. I started coming here as a place to fill what few boring moments I may find in a day but it wasn't long before I was making time to hang here, you've been warned.

Haha, between a pikey and a stroke victim! I worked as a barmaid at a Kingshead pub in Kensington Square for about 5 months and I was SO lost! "A b'll bee, lassie". The drunker they got, the worse it got. I did enjoy the British way of tipping which is buying drinks for the bartenders instead of giving a cash tip. At first I was afraid of getting drunk so I declined politely. Then a generous, seasoned barmaid was kind enough to explain that you kept one drink going and kept a tally of how many drinks were bought and cashed out at the end of the night. This was about 15 years ago.
York was the place I had that weird experience with the guy in the queue for the Jorvik Viking Centre
"One side will lose everything!"
Nicky, that is probably my favorite story of yours.
Also, hi, Yorkshire Man.
There is hope, but not for us.
I've just got around to writing my own 'hello' post on this section and came across yours. How similar, except that I am not male ha. What Coupland are you currently reading?

Oh, I also love tattoos hence the Sailor Jerry avatar. His rum isn't bad either.
