Chicks Dig Chuck!
So... I guess I'm not really "new" anymore. I joined a couple months ago, so I don't really feel all that new...
I have never really formally (or as formally as can be in this setting) introduced myself to everyone here.
My name is Clare. I'm 20, I live in Madison WI.
I pretty much live and breath Chuck.
I got into him when I read Fight Club in 2005.
I'd known about/loved the movie for some time and then discovered that there was a book that went along with it and decided to check it out.
Life got in the way so I didn't really familiarize myself with the rest of his works until about 3 months ago. I checked out "Survivor" and it blew me away! I continued on with my personal favorite, Invisible Monsters, onto Choke and now I am reading Lullaby.
I am a HUGE fan of all that I have read so far.
I really want to know all there is to know about Chuck, his style and... well everything!
That's my little bit.
I'm happy to have found this place...
Did your name used to be Aubergine Dreams? or was that someone else?
If I help you, Clarealyce, it will be "turns" with us too. Quid pro quo. I tell you things, you tell me things. Not about this case, though. About yourself. Quid pro quo. Yes or no?

hey, clare
IM is my favorite as well, just a rollercoaster fun ride
once you burn through everything the man has written, dont fret because there are plenty of other great authors out there, most of which i would not have known about without this place
a few facts:
the chuckster used to teach here via online lessons back in all of 2004 and 2005
he has two books of non-fiction and both are great reads
his new novel comes out in the spring and you can preorder it and read an excerpt through this thread, click here
back in 2004, he read craig clevenger's first book, audaciously titled the contortionists' handbook, and recommended it as "the best books [he's] read in five years. easily five years. maybe ten."
when we all became familiar with this new badass writer, we read his favorite contemporary writer, will christopher baer. get around to ordering kiss me, judas sometime. the novel belongs in a trilogy and you can at that point get the other two if you love the writing. his forth book, his epic novel, should (hopefully) release next year
if you love short stories, chucky p's favorite writer is amy hempel. her stories will break your heart. they are now available as a full collection containing all four books
chuck learned to write fiction via tom spanbauer's workshop for dangerous writing, where he still attends regularly
some members between the velvet and the cult also attend that workshop, sometimes sharing the table with chuck and tom and monica drake (she wrote clowngirl and chuck gave a raving recommend on it, being that theyve been workshopping together for years and, according to him, she has always written way better than he)
when you want to freak out, there is a crazy badass book that seeped through the woodwork titled house of leaves, or as we tend to call it, HoL. youll find that it is fucking incredible
the last novel to blow me away was the road by cormac mccarthy . it's an oprah pick, so im sure youve heard of it. man, that book kills. during clevenger's intensive this past summer here at the cult, he recommended it highly as well.
stay away from james frey and jt leroy--youd only grow to hate them, especially if you had to struggle to make it through the books like i did
youll come to hear about and maybe even love denis johnson and mark richard (richard is pronounced in the french manner)
for me, chuck was a gateway drug to so many others
he got me away from grisham and clancy and star wars novels, books that didnt really involve me, didnt make me feel, but stimulated my mind with words. chuck grabbed me and shook like hell haha
welcome to the cult

Mark Z. Danielewski
and a few others.
I don't like the name Cujo for anything but if it fits the cat (if the cat is a rabid mess) I'm sure it's great!
Who's Derek again?

I have heard about many of the things you mentioned... the workshops, the favorite books, Clowngirl...
I own HoL and read/fell in love with it before I ever knew Chuck existed. Mark Z. is one of my favorite writers, as well and I also check out his little forum site from time to time.
Thanks for taking so much time to greet me!!!
