no better way to celebrate your 21st birthday than with the poetry and stories of a nihilistic alcoholic.

Not much further, though. Bukowski has about as many novels out as Palahniuk. Ive never been much into poetry myself (always figure that will come along naturally later in life), but I hear that his prose is pretty fantastic wonderfull smooth
ps I loved Pulp

I knew an amazingly HOT guy back in college who absolutely adored CB.
He collected rare books.
I wonder where he is now...
Where the hot guy is or Bukowski?

I've not read anything of his other than his foreword to Fante's Ask the Dust. Bukowshi loved his work. I'm hoping one day somebody will respond to my thread about Fante in the book club forum (le sigh:( )

None of the Libraries around here carry any Bukowski. I keep looking in the used stores too with no luck. Do you guys know any good places to get his stuff cheap. I'm broke as a joke.
Sorry, short-circuit, I cant offer you solace. Im pretty broke too - that's the only reason i dont have em all - they are never at a discount, anywhere. All of his books are between $12-$16, which isnt bad, but Id like to find em for $7 or $8 soft-covers.
One of these days Ill be able to read em all, but until then Ill just have to keep thinking about one day

Sadly, I don't know if Bukowski is hot, though he seemed hot when the Hot guy would read Bukowski's stories to me.
I remember one about two guys being called to pick up a dead body. It turned out to be a beautiful woman...and, well, you may already know the rest.
But the HOT guy? Seriously, all these years later, I have no idea why I never...I guess I was protecting the friendship. But it sure would be nice to know where he is now...('cept for that he is probably married, happy, has 10 kids, etc.!) I just hope he is still writing, because after reading all that Bukowski, I think it influenced his own work.
I'll bet he likes Chuck, as well...
Yea most likey... they write completely different but i read them both.

Hey amory...next time resist the urge to aim a post like
that at me, OK? Haha...I kid. How silly of me to stray
away from "beauty and absolute brilliance," though.
Way to call me out. Speaking of beauty, I have a Bukowski
T-shirt and everytime I wear it, people always ask who that
"ugly old man" is. Bah. I think he had a beautiful face full of character.

Hey send me your shirt! I want a shirt with Bukowski's picture on it... i would be in heaven.

Hey...no way, man. Get your own shirt. I'm not parting
with mine. I can tell you that I got it off of ebay, though.

hmmmmm thank you for the tip... how much?

Let's see...if memory serves, I think it was between $15-$20. There might be cheaper places out there somewhere, but I had only checked on ebay. Good luck...and let me know what you find.

I couldnt find any on the web but i did find soem on ebay for $15- $20. Not to bad, but none of them wwre in my size

Well that's a bummer. Just keep checking back. The company I won it from gave a choice of sizes and colors. Don't give up. Bukowski's worth it.

His novels are kinda boring though.
You really think so... with all the sex and drunken madness?!?!? I love his books. Especially Hollywood.

I stronghy agree. Some of his books are repeating. Like Women for example. Hollywood didnt have to repeating pattern though.. which is why i like it best. No one can beat his shorts though.

Post Office is one of my favs, as is Women.
You're right though goffer, by the end it's hard to match up "faces" (so to speak) with names. Still a great novel, in my opinion. Pulp and Factotum are next on the deck for me.
Cheap books--it didn't seem like anyone mentioned it (I may have missed something) but www.half.com is always a good bet. It's where I got my first Palahniuk book (tear).
Anyone read "The Most Beautiful Woman in Town and other short stories"? It has some really out there shit. Good read though.
He knew everything about literature except how to enjoy it.

I like Bukowski also. His writing can be really ugly in places, and hilarious in others....and I love that he refuses to sentimentalize. Have you read any of his poetry? I haven't read much, but my favorite poem starts with the line, "When God created love he didn't help most."
