Another Noob for the Fire
Well, it's about time I introduced myself. I've been wandering through the topics for the past month or so, attempting to get a feel for the place, but this is officially my first post. What the frell do I write here? I’ve been a Chuck P. fan for years. My first book was Invisible Monsters, which will forever remain my favorite. I’m very bitter that Chuck hasn’t brought his book tour to Hawaii (that I’m aware of anyway), but I plan on making a trip out to the continent in hopes of catching a reading in May (crosses fingers). I’m an IT specialist/web designer as well as a student working towards my Network Systems Administration Degree…and that’s about all I have to say really…but I find the need to keep typing…Let’s see….I’m mildly obsessive compulsive…I own 8 watches…I use the excuse that I need to accessorize with different outfits, but really one of my greatest fears is not knowing what time it is…I have a pile of empty priority mail boxes in different sizes in the corner of my room in the event that I might ever have to mail out a package…Everyone I’ve ever met has labeled me as a goth, when in reality I just prefer to wear black to reduce the amount of energy people waste when finding something to wear (Einsten did it, but with brown suits)….I have a hole in my roof that I’ve sealed with a patch of duct tape…I’m afraid of the dark…I’m afraid of public bathroom…I rarely drink but I chain smoke cloves…okay…I think that’s enough…by the by...name's Nic...no K...just 3 letters...

i hear there are a lot of hawaiians in alaska. why?
while it's not something I would normally do, approaching some shady character sleeping on the bus stop bench if she's ever caught a yeast infection...there are many shelter-less folk living here. Goverments send their street-folk here since there are no harsh temperatures and because Hawaii has perhaps the best medical in the country (or so I've heard) and there are numerous clinics available to those unable to pay...though I doubt Hawaii has more homeless then any other city...describing Hawaii as paradise is a far reach, however, for one of my greatest joys in life is riding the bus that stops at the airport and watching the looks of disappointment that crosses the faces of many tourists as they take in what they see before them in comparison to what they've seen in a brochure...

the hatred of constant sun? I'm not quite sure...but I must admit that I've had many fantasies of living in Alaska...I've heard there were a lot of Japanese living there as well...

“...There are so many ways of being despicable it quite makes one's head spin. But the way to be really despicable is to be contemptuous of other people's pain. You ought to have some apprehension that the man you see before you was once even younger than you are now and arrived at his present wretchedness by imperceptible degrees.”
-James Baldwin
Yes, welcome. And shit, always the shit.
I'm in a tropical paradise right now but thats only because I've got the heating turned up high and I'm eating freeze-pops.
I think they should turn all of Hawaii into some kind of prison island thing, it could be like the one in battle royale.
!
Why not? The island of Molokai was used as a leper colony in the late 1800's...nothing says paradise like a trip to an island that once held the thousands of rotting corpses of those who were banished, having a choice between living on the disease-infested island, or plunging 2,000 feet from the cliffs to the sea below.

Hey - welcome! I like your avatar and signature. And though Hawaii may not be all its cracked up to be, I'm sure it beats MN and most of the other states. If you feel the need to use one of those priority boxes, I love getting packages.
Welcome. Glad there is another person who's winter is around the 70's. Is it starting to get really hot again during the day? Over here we had a couple of hot days, giving a little taste of what is to come during the year.
So...We are still going to die. Right?
I went to the SPAM museum. It's in MN.
What's it like being a Goth in Hawaii?
It seems about as congruous as a guy in Speedos at the North Pole...
wow....thanks....okay first....
I made the sig pic but stole the avatar years ago from a public domain GIF site I don't even remember the address for...
The weather here...is questionable....we seem to be going through our cold spell which equates to bright sun and strangely frigid breeze...
Spam...Gods...I hate Spam. I try not to eat processed meat, including all sausages such as hot dogs. Read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair and you'll never eat processed meat again...
What's it like being Goth in Hawaii...I'll make sure to ask the next teenie bopper that emerges from the Topic of Hotness when I'm at the mall.

so by strangely frigid you mean...?
I grew up in california, but I now live in frickin minnesota. I remember when it was fall my first year up here, it was like 55 degrees outside and I was wearing a coat and everyone laughed. I still wear a coat in weather like that. I just can't get used to it here.

omg if it was 60 here, I would be in shorts!!! well I don't really wear shorts very often maybe a skirt either way that's so not even close to frigid, oh and hi and welcome and all that jazz
i hear there are a lot of hawaiians in alaska. why?
They're looking to recross the Land Bridge between the continents and rewind this whole, sorted, migrational affair.
I was here. Then I wasn't. Then I was again.

I guess I was just going on the feeling that most people who say that they aren't Goths, but that people come up to them and tell them they look like Goths, are quite often Goths. In denial.
But I'm all for black clothing as an energy saving measure. So enough of the Goth chat.
(P.S - what's the Topic of Hotness?)
(P.P.S - Does, like, everyone listen to Jack Johnson in Hawaii? While whittling surfboards?)
I get cold when it's 70 degrees out.

Topic of Hotness...Hot Topic...it's an evil store brought forth to destroy all that is good and replace it with its malicious evilness... hottopic.com if you don't know...
As for Jack Johnson...while I'm sure there are people that listen to him, I don't. Not that I have anything against the guy, but it's not like he's put out anything new lately. We do get MTV ya know. As for surfing, I must admit there are many that waste their hours fiddling with neoprene and surf wax, but I'm not one of them. I hate the sun. With my luck I'm bound to get skin cancer. Besides, my eyes have adjusted perminately to seeing only as far as the computer screen and false lighting...I just prefer not to stray too far from a power outlet longer then it takes my laptop to die...
And as for other Hawaii-related rumors:
My girlfriend dances Ballet and not hula...Everyone thinks Hula is all we do here...
I haven't paddled a canoe since I was 12...the whole hatred of sun thing would have prohibited me from joining at all, but my social worker demanded that I join a sport
I live in a house which is NOT made of grass/straw
Yes about half of the population speaks Pidgin...or what I've heard considered Hawaiian Creol, a very broken language which combines words of English, Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Samoan and Filipino into something that just sounds ignorant.
We do get cable TV as well as Satelite TV
We have computers and many other technological devices that you mainlanders have...but I do hear that y'all got them there new fandangled machines known as mobile telephones...

Any other questions I can answer about Hawaii?

Good reply Darkestlight!
I'm a sarcastic Brit who's looking out of his window at a swirling snowy mess at the moment - so the idea of actually LIVING in somewhere like Hawaii just seems so beyond the realms of my everyday life that it makes me chuckle. I know not everyone is a-hulaing down the street - but I am interested in what it's like to live on a volcanic island.
Do you feel a little cut off from things? Ever thought about moving to the US mainland?
Actually...I don't live on a volcanic island....That would be the ISLAND of Hawaii...but the state of Hawaii is made up of 8 islands:
Hawaii (aka The Big Island)
Maui
Oahu
Kauai
Molokai
Lanai
Niihau
Kahoolawe
I live on Oahu...the island with the currently erupting volcanoe is the Big Island. I've seen the volcanoe many times and it is quite a site, especially at night where there's an orange glow that lights up the sky. I lived on that island and the volcanoe really has no effect on life there, with an exception of those that live at higher elevations having to deal with the volcanic smoke in the air...
I do feel cut off in the sense that if I were to drive for two hours on one street, I'd end up in the same place I was before...
I used to fantasize about moving to the mainland, but on a trip up there last year, I realized that Hawaii was just like anywhere else. Minus billboards since those are illegal here. If I lived on the continent, I'd probably end up lost and huddled in an alley corner wanting to come back to Hawaii. I would love to see snow, though I can't even imagine what sub-zero temperatures are like. The only snow we have in Hawaii is atop a mountain on the Big Island known as Mauna Kea where the world's largest telescope resides. Not exactly the ideal location to learn to snowboard. Granted our lack of exposure to snow allows residents to attempt insane stunts when visiting the mountain, such as the teen that thought it wise too boogeyboard face-first down the icy snow mountainside resulting in much needed facial reconstruction surgery.
Another addition...Yes I have met Dog the Bounty Hunter(for those who watch his show) since his office is just down the street from the office I work at...strangely that fact seemed the most important thing when I met my friend's roommates in Orlando...

Hi. I'm Kate. Is it shitty living in a tropical paradise? I heard that certain shiftless people go there because they think being a bum will be easy, living off the tropical fruits, enjoying the warmth etc, but then because it's so warm and moist there, and they're living so filthily they get horrible yeast infections and all their cuts turn gangrenous and so it's like living in an incubator for diseases, and not the paradise of easy living they imagined it would be....
your thoughts and feelings on this?
THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
