another no0b...
Hey everyone I'm brand new to the cult, since having read 6 chuck books in a month I decided to join every palahniuk fan's favorite forum. I was looking for any tips on how to not sound like the biggest idiot in the forum, and I'm sure that last sentence was a bad start. Anyone?

yeah and thanks for the welcome! so since this is such a big day for americans and their movies, who thinks a half indian movie (slumdog) should win best picture? because if it doesnt then i will be so disappointed..

yeah, like amy said, there is not way to not sound idiotic here. so no worries.
hey, mike. welcome to the cult. i havent seen that avatar in years. i wonder if nate remembers who last had it..
anyway, look around and have fun. there's plenty of booktalk and moviespeak around these walls. also some very cool interviews with the likes of kitchum and clark greg and jane thomas. a few free essays by writers like stephen graham jones and chuck himself, not to mention a free short story by will christopher baer
lotta cool here, brother

serious about the avatar? i was sure 50% of the cult members would have it too. and I'm so excited to see some of the interviews and writers workshops, chuck has so quickly and definitely changed my life, that I could name a more positive influence aside from my parents. The only thing they do too much is censor, so they wont let me read snuff (which I hear is his least powerful but still great), and haunted after reading guts. They don't want me getting fancy with my pool filter if ya know what I mean

I was lucky, my parents never ever censored my reading. I was about 15 when I read American Psycho and my mum would talk to me about it. They weren't iffy about films either...or curfews...perhaps I was never loved at all.
I wouldn't worry about missing out with Snuff. Which was your favourite Chuck novel?
well I have experienced a lot of censorship with many things. first off when i was reading lullaby shotgun in my mom's car and i was on the page where streator had sex with his wife which then turned out to be dead. My mom read about one sentence and yelled "Jesus!!!" and swerved the car on to the curb. quite an overreaction i you asked me. I convinced her to let me read it because its art of literature, not like porno. and also that she made me read kite runner which was just as bad. She wont let me get Mature rated video games either, such as Oblivion or Halo or fallout.
My favourite chuck novel though? I'll eliminate diary and lullaby immediately, though they were great. Survivor isnt, for lack of a plot twist which I love so much but still great. Choke probably not because I was baffled by whether paige was really from the future or not, so that leaves Rant and Fight club (I'm reading invisible monsters now). those two changed my life in mass amounts, Rant for thoughts on time travel, it's relationship with jesus and religion, and thoughts of being different. Fight club for just being sicknasty, the insight on depression and american life. So that's my nutshell explanation of favourite novel, what is yours?

Hey, is your name a Muse reference?
!
Welcome to the cult, Micronuts.
Hi!
I am fueled by filth and fury.
yeah good call I didnt think anyone would find the connection with micro cuts... muse is the greatest thing that has happened to me. You like them a lot too Mike?

So that's my nutshell explanation of favourite novel, what is yours?
Wow! Your mum sounds hardcore!
I loved Choke the most. It's been a long time since I read it but I still think it's one of the funniest books I have ever read. I liked Survivor, too.
It's really interesting seeing a new fan come here and say Rant is probably their favourite, since a lot of us have liked him a long long time now and personally I always think that his stuff has been of declining quality. But I hear you say that and I'm starting to come around to the idea that I'm being really harsh and if I was just starting to read him now maybe I'd like that stuff a lot more and the older stuff less.
I should stop being such a grouchy bitch, perhaps.
Yeah, I remember Micro Cuts quite well, it's a great song to listen to on headphones. Muse was my favourite band for a long time, my tastes have changed a bit now but they still have a special place in my heart. Anyway, welcome to the cult!
!

I don't think it's physically possible to listen to micro cuts without getting a headache... bellamy goes so high in the chorus it's just chilling... a true representation of classic british music.
And to you, 188416, I did love the humor in choke. I had been a fan of Dan Brown before palahniuk, and never really experienced in-book jokes until choke and survivor. Choke with the fake rape scene, and survivor with the Tender Branson prayer books. Prayer for a parking spot...pshht I'm jewish and that sounds crazy even to me! But as for his soon to be newest book, I'm excited to see how Pygmy turns out. The foreign exchange kids related to 9-11 and terrorist bombs, sounds so good. I happened to be in New York at the time and had a good friend who unfortunately perished in the crash so I'm excited for some Chuck plot, humor, and insight on that

Hi, don't be shy. (its harder that way.)

There's been tons of people with that for an avatar. I think stray bullet had it last. But be careful, fight club avatars are kind of taboo around here. It's a sign of mindless tyler durden wannabees that can only quote chapter and verse from the movie. But if you like it, keep it. Just think for yourself though. Godspeed, micronuts!
i'm happier with my avatar now, a lil more original in a world of tylers i guess

See, I find your outlook rather interesting. I've been reading Chuck for about 5 years, which I know is not long in the scheme of things, but both Choke and Rant are my favorites. Choke really is one of the funniest books i've ever read, but I think I really like Rant because its a rather far leap from what Chuck is usually like.
And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping. The moon tells me a secret. My confidant.
yeah i agree completely. They both were funny, but I think the sexual and more slapstick-esque humor was obvious in choke and directied toward a larger audience. I really liked the entire focus on jesus and the trinity thru time travel. and also the comment, by i forget who, about how elvis is alive and all that. Cool stuff to think about.

Welcome.
Welcome to the Cult, officially. I've seen you in chat but hadn't seen your intro thread. I'm glad you started it. Hopefully, you'll get good use out of this space.
Good coffee is like drinking Rock and Roll.
Hey, I'm a noob, too!
Yeah, I think I just beat you on the idiot column, but oh well.
Welcome, and enjoy.

You'll be hard pushed to sound more idiotic than a few people here.
Don't sweat it, and also welcome!
