Zooey Deschanel's new show: worse than being in a bathtub full of scorpions
This would have been sickening enough if it was just a movie, but someone decided to make a whole series out of it? They all need to be shot. Bring on the scorpions.
Didn't they have a monkey on Friends at some point? They'd have to add something super-quirky, like a Chinchilla or a Pot Belly Pig.
This makes her sisters' awful show seem eminently watchable.
see, she has GLASSES and that's how we know she's awkward and has trouble with men!
also women be cryin...

the quirking 3: the show

Of course they have to have a white guy, a black guy, and a vaguely latino looking guy. Could this show be any whiter?
Lofi and Kit you're so funny.
It looks like it should be a romcom movie, not a telly show.
I watch crap on telly, I'll probably see what it's like if NZ ever gets it.
You guys are all just jealous because she's basically the most beautiful female in the world.
You know, in all honesty though, it made me laugh a couple of times. But maybe it's just because I think she's super cute and I want to make a baby with her or something.
It seemed more like a romantic comedy movie than it did a whole season. Can't imagine where they'll take in after season one, if it doesn't get canceled before then.
Yeah, she's pretty gorgeous.
Don't be jelly. I like Zooey.
One hawt person does not a good show make.
That's where you're wrong. Watching every episode just to look at her. Don't care how shit it is. When she was on Weeds, when the show was kinda getting crappy, it seriously made it so much better.
I totally forgot about that! I fast forwarded through everything except the scenes she was in... not because she was hot but because she was funny.
This didn't seem very funny or cute to me at all BUT if enough people think she is, I guess it can be carried by her. Her and her pet chinchilla and/or pot belly pig.
I'm just stirring. A shit show is a shit show, regardless of the cute girl that's starring in it. But, man is she a cutie.
I didn't even make it through the first minute of that and that was with the sound really low so I really didn't even hear anything but I got the whole "This is no ordinary blah blah blah". The emphasis on how unordinary everything was in the first minute made me gag a little. The hipsters are gonna be all over that show and of course anyone who thinks Zooey is hot.
So, like, everyone, right?
Eww, she's so plain, but then she takes off those big glasses and puts on that black dress and its like--whoa, dudes would totally date her if she weren't so weird and quirky!
cool, i was hoping the natalie portman character from garden state would get a spinoff show!
goddddd...it's like she's trying to push herself to be even more of a cartoon of quirky indie culture bullshit. i swear at the beginning you can actually see her straining to open her eyes wider and wider...
THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
I liked her in Elf and now I'm kind of sick of her. I agree with Kate that she's stretching the whole I'm quirky/nerdy bit. She's turning into a one trick pony and it'd be nice if she stuck with her I'm really hot trick but she is pushing the I'm really hot, quirky, and nerdy bit.
I think she's cute and entertaining. But I read somewhere she sings in a band, and it looks like she sings through this whole tv show, I think she's a terrible singer.
Duders. I watched Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy for her.
Twice.
Am I buying product? Yes, I am.
Am I whining about it? Nope.
OMGSHE'SSOQUIRKYANDCUUUTE!!!1!
This is why we can't have nice things.
heehee she opens her eyes any wider the top half of her head gonna crack and fall off!
See, that's comedy.
This is why we can't have nice things.
This show needs a a slow loris.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Funny that you should be cut about her being weird and indie and quirky, Kate, because that's the exact vibe I get from you. Maybe it just comes down to jealousy because she's doing your thang?
Anyway, to touch on her musical career, she plays in a duet called She & Him. To me, their sound has a kind of nostalgic feel. Almost like 60s pop with a bit of a surf vibe. I really dig it. She's just singing silly in that trailer, not seriously. She's got a really great voice. If I wasn't on my phone I'd chuck a video at the end here.
And, I don't think she's plain, at all. She's got got classic features. That's like saying Audrey Hepburn was plain. Big beautiful eyes that you could stare in all day under dirty white sheets. She's got it going on.
Sometimes a name actor will do a pilot because it's a week's work for some easy hard cash. Sometimes, to their chagrin, it will get picked up.
This is why we can't have nice things.
you totally nailed it. and she'd post videos of it on youtube!
I don't have a problem with Zooey at all, I think she's cute and she does have good comedic timing, but they're pushing her so far into this indie girl mold she'll never be able to get out of it.
Not for me.
I really liked her in Elf and 500 Days of Summer (great movie if you havn't watched it already). But I don't watch too many sitcoms--by the time I watch them, they're already old.
That being said, what is with all of these movie actors turning to television? I agree with Tuffy's take to a point but it's becoming the norm.
She falls into the category of girl I would like to sleep with but don't think is overrly attractive. I think it's like in Juno: she says how the people wanna sleep with the qwerky girls.
You look like the type of guy / gal, who would like:
Matthew- I would like to address what you said vis jealousy. That makes twice now that you have accused critique of this show and the "manic pixie dream girl" trope as just being thinly-veiled jealousy.
I wonder if you realize how completely ignorant that stance is? "Female doesn't like it when the media reduces another female to a stereotype. OBVIOUSLY the critiquing female must be JEALOUS." Really Matthew? That's the best you've got?
Yeah, no. That really isn't how it works. (And quite frankly, I'm not responsible for whatever "vibe" you get off me. I am who and what I am. I am complicated and multi-faceted and a human being, just as you are. And I'm not aspiring to fashion myself in the likeness of some kind of limited trope. It's insulting that you would imply as much, but I am giving you a free pass this time, because I get the impression that you've never thought about this stuff much.)
Here's a fairly decent breakdown of what I'm trying to articulate here.

I encourage you to read it.

Isn't that black guy already on Happy Endings. Now THAT show is bad. And before you say it, yes. I watched all of Happy Endings. Penny's cute but other than that, the characters are not redeemable.
Back on topic, New Girl looks like an abortion.
I respect everyone's opinion on this, and I don't especially love Zooey, but damn I was cracking up at that trailer.
I don't have a problem with Zooey at all, I think she's cute and she does have good comedic timing, but they're pushing her so far into this indie girl mold she'll never be able to get out of it.
It's not that Zooey isn't beautiful or talented but it's more about how these parts she's choosing to play have to emphasize how quirky, eccentric she is. Most of the time when people try to push the issue of how something really is makes me think it's really not like that at all.
She's got a really great voice.
And, I don't think she's plain, at all. She's got got classic features. That's like saying Audrey Hepburn was plain. Big beautiful eyes that you could stare in all day under dirty white sheets. She's got it going on.
How dare you compare her to Audrey! hehe just kidding
Okay and so I got through the whole trailer this time with sound. Still looks awful. It seems way too forced.
Sure, I'll read your feminist article. But know that it's probably positive descrimination.
Look, all I'm saying is you're not the only quirky indie chick around. And to get pissed that a chick that fits that mold, who I'm sure in real life, not to be confused with movie life, where she's acting, she's a multi-faceted, complex human, too. Maybe she likes playing roles like that because she's just kinda weird in real life. Or maybe it appeals to her because it's not the norm, though, of course, we could argue that it's definitely becoming a cliche now. Who knows.
I also love the way you, Kate, like to nudge in there that you believe I don't think about these things, or that you're somehow intellectually above me. It's deliciously patronising.
You go on being weird and quirky. She'll go on acting as a weird and quirky person. The world keeps spinning. There's stereotypes everywhere. I doubt we'll ever escape them. Yes, we're all individuals, but, you know, we all seem to fit into one or two molds.
I can hardly be bothered arguing with you over it. Perhaps I just take everything you say the wrong way. You're a very intelligent lady, obviously. Let's leave it at that, huh?
Okay, I get the whole "manic pixie dream girl" thing. But, then, on the flipside, what about the "every bloke is hopeless until a girl comes along and saves him" trope? You know, it works both ways. It's the movies. They're techniques.
I will say, though, that was a great article.
I'm pretty sure I was critiquing her character in this show, as opposed to her as a woman. Maybe that is where the confusion is arising for you...
and for you to glibly gloss over your (two-time!)assertion that a critique of that stereotype equates to jealousy on the part of the person critiquing, does nothing but make you look unintelligent and sexist. maybe you are not either of those things. I welcome the opportunity to discover the side of you that is sensitive to gender stereotyping in television and film! Bring it on!
THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
They're totally gonna do it.
It's Dave and Maddie all over again... The tension will build, it'll be great to watch. Then they'll do it in a two-part cliffhanger season finale and the show will spend the whole next season sucking before it gets cancelled.
This is why we can't have nice things.

For you younguns out there.
This is why we can't have nice things.
Revenge sig, Brute?
This is why we can't have nice things.
I think she is beautifulm there is a girl here that actually looks just fucking like her.
And I watch two shows on tv, one is he sister's show, I don't care what y'all think!
"I'm glad I live in the GPS era. In a different century, I would've set off to visit the other side of the village and wandered off into the mountains and been eaten by a carnivorous plant. Or discovered the Americas."

I enjoy Bones.
The trailer made me laugh too, Fano. In the words of Michael Jackson: You are not alone.
She IS heartbreakingly beautiful. I love watching her. I wont lie. I mean...It is pretty awesome to watch her eyes get hyuuuuuuuuger and hyuuuuuuuger. But yeah. I don't like that "dudes need a muse to save them" deal either. It is so demeaning. The flipside is that we all need each other. Just in different ways at different times. I don't want to fight in this thread. I just want to make fun of bad writing.
ps a woman wrote it. so....there's THAT.
THATS SO +3 STILETTO DUDE
See, like I said, it made me laugh, too.
And, I'm gonna go on the record and say I loved Moonlighting. Whatever.
Also, not revenge, Tuffy, just adoration of that beautiful passage of words that I wished I could say I knew what you were talking about. The words make sense, and they're beautiful, but the meaning is lost because I've yet to experience such beauty, such love.
I like Zooey. I like quirky people. But I'm sick of Zooey's quirky characters. She plays them really well, but it's about time she did something different. Even Jim Carrey tried different characters once and a while, and he ended up playing them really well.
In relation, Zooey could never out-quirk Kate Winslet's "Clementine" from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Now that was an inspiring quirky female character.
Watched one of my favourite flicks last night and noticed that the whole "manic quirky dream girl" trope was used again: Stranger than Fiction. Right? Didn't make me like it any less though. Fucking love that movie.
Matt, that movie is amazing. Love it so much.
Yeah that's a great movie.

i wish it was quirkier. hopefully they add a monkey or something before the first season ends.
